The Biggest Challenge
The biggest challenge was transforming a childhood game idea into a complete, polished 2D action game using multiple AI systems while keeping the gameplay stable.
Our biggest technical breakthrough came during the HD visual overhaul. The new illustrated artwork initially caused severe frame-rate drops, particularly during boss fights. Through repeated testing, rendering optimizations, cached artwork, and adaptive resolution, we dramatically improved performance without sacrificing the upgraded visuals.
Coordinating different AI tools, preserving working builds, and making sure new features didn't break existing systems became just as important as generating the code itself.
AI Tools Used
Claude, ChatGPT, Grok, and Aubum (my own locally hosted AI system).
Claude created the original game and handled much of its subsequent development, including gameplay implementation, visual upgrades, and technical improvements. ChatGPT contributed Level 3, additional development, testing, visual direction, and release preparation.
Grok contributed three concept-art reference images. Aubum generated the game's original soundtrack locally.
I provided the original concept, creative vision, design decisions, and hands-on playtesting throughout development.
Areas Where AI Was Used
AI was used for game programming, debugging, performance optimization, visual design, concept art, illustrated game assets, character and enemy artwork, backgrounds, animation, cinematics, dialogue, interface design, and music generation. AI tools also assisted with testing, controller support, mobile compatibility, achievements, and release preparation. The original game concept, overall creative vision, project direction, feature decisions, and hands-on playtesting were human-led.

I loved the visuals and the atmosphere. However, I think the controls are little bit too clunky. If you intend to make it a part of design, I would suggest adjusting other elements to compliment it. For example, cockroaches and worms/maggots?? are too low to be handled with basic horizontal shooting. Flamethrower was cool too.
The controls don't feel great, if you're gonna make the player have to kill things up and down, it would feel better to have a smooth 360 bullet hell style game. Even on easy it's hard.
Noted. Will consider more fluid aiming going forward. My inspiration was along the lines of nes titles such as contra. But I can see why more fluid aiming could benefit.
Ah, absolutely! Contra was definitely brutal! That totally makes sense now.
It felt like a classic 2D action game, which I really liked.
However, I'm not a big fan of bugs, so even on EASY mode, I ended up giving up around the Stage 1 boss. The difficulty might be on the higher side, or maybe it's just meant to be quite challenging.
I agree it is a bit more on the challenging side intentionally. I know some people enjoy that so I made some of the achievements downright evil. I will consider adding an additional game mode that brings the difficulty down in the future though as I feel like over all accessability and fun are the most important things. Thank you for the feedback!
I see! If the high difficulty was intentional, then that makes complete sense. I totally get why people love games with that kind of challenge.
Some games only really shine once your skills reach a certain level—bullet hell shooters are a great example, which I personally love—so if that was the intended vision, it all clicks for me!
