What are the "File Attachments" to the dev-logs for?

What are the file attachments to the devlogs for? They never seem to be click-able, and I really don't know why they're there and if they should do something. I uploaded patch notes for my v1.1 and had a purchaser without an account (email only) tell me that they couldn't click on the file attachment for the patch on there.

I'm a game creator, and all this patching and attaching and however the itch backend works is something that I still find somewhat confusing.

So can someone please tell me what the proper use of the attachments are, and what should be attached for a patch notes update, or a regular development update?

Thanks!

Could you share the public devlog URL where the patch attachment isn’t clickable?

This is what is up there.

Were you able to see anything? Also, what should I typically put for attachments there? Just the latest patch? I really don't know. Should I even put anything? Like I said, I have no idea what the purpose is of these being there. I just don't understand the underlying system.

Thanks!

Thanks, I checked the devlog. Those attachment rows list the files associated with the post rather than acting as download links. Buyers download updates from their purchase/download page; someone who bought without an account can use the link in their purchase email. More info: /docs/buying/already-bought

Okay. Thanks! So last question: Should I attach those for future posts, or just leave them unattached? Or attach just the patch for that specific patch, if it's a patch-notes? I'm just trying to make sure I don't make a fool of myself since this is still new to me. lol

Thanks!

It's purely cosmetic, it can be used to communicate to your readers what files are part of the update you're posting. It doesn't have any effect on how files are accessed.

You won't make a fool of yourself either way, attachments are optional. Attaching a file to a devlog just marks it as the file that post is about, so readers can see which build the patch notes go with. It doesn't create a download link, which is why your buyer couldn't click it. An itch admin explained it in an older thread: they keep downloads on the project's download page on purpose, so different versions don't end up floating around on different posts (/t/182672/cant-get-devlog-attachments-to-work).

So for a patch notes post, attaching just the file that changed in that patch is a sensible habit, and for a general dev update you can leave it empty. If a buyer can't find the update, pointing them to their download page or purchase email like itchboy said is the real fix. Congrats on getting v1.1 out.

Thanks! And yeah, I had directed him to his purchase email and he was able to get the patch. Just wanted to make sure I understood the attachment thing. I'll know where to go from here on out.

Thanks again!
