Hey, so sorry I didn't get a review up for last month's jam, we were busy working on Eldwyn's Dungeon Academy, so my review never got finalized and posted.
I like the purring SFX when you are using Extra Pets.
In the upgrade screen, when you click on the upgrade button it shows options to buy 1, 5, and 10. I feel like those should just be there to start with, and instead of clicking the upgrade button and then choosing which option to go with.
I played around with the mini-games. They are cute and add to the feel of the game. You'll quickly have enough money to do them as often as you want, which makes them even more nice, in my opinion. I certainly like the ability to purchase many at a time for these. It is nice for the regular upgrades, but the consumables are where I use this the most.
I got a silly screenshot with a ball of cats, all attracted to the laser pointer that I wanted to share.
Related to the laser pointer and the screenshot above, if you rapid fire turn the laser on and off at the same point you can have the same effect as if you were moving the laser pointer around and not letting the cats get it, but without moving the laser pointer. Is this something you want?
I really like the design you have for the cats and upgrades, with the top and bottom bars framing an image. The top and bottom do a great job of giving you place for text that fits the styling.
I got all of my upgrades up to level 15-25, and then let it sit on the side for a while while playing a different jam game. The interactions between the people and the cats help to keep the game interesting even while it is in the background. There is plenty of movement and things happening, which fits the "Chaos Cat Cafe" feel.
I got the upgrades up to level 110-143, and I got a cafe level of a little over 400. My cat customer plays was 833, my cat interactions was 3760, and rising quickly. I got all of the achievements. I earned a total of 1,585,213 income, and I played for 1:41:15.
I do not have any more notes for this release. This is a solid demo. I would love to see the full game when it is released.
-R (Yes, from DIS Kids.)
I'm glad you really enjoyed the demo! I wanted the laser pointer to feel like similar to when a cat is actually chasing a laser pointer, if it is turned off they will lose track of it. Rapidly turning it on and off could cause some odd interactions but as long as it's not game breaking I think it adds to the chaos. Some of your other feedback is actually being adjusted in the full version. Thank you for your feedback.
You can get a discount by purchasing in bulk. If you buy 10 units of cat food costing $100 each it will cost $1,000 and leave the price for the next at $600.
I like the new ways to play with the cats. Though why does it cost money to pet my cats?
I like the new upgrade art. It looks really good.
Having the smoke behind the kitties helps indicate that they are moving fast.
I don't have many notes. This game feels well made and polished.
I didn't even think about getting a discount by buying in bulk based on how pricing works. I think it actually makes sense to get a discount buying in bulk but I will have to acknowledge that somewhere. Glad you like the new effects and upgrade art. I can see how purchasing the manual pet game seeming odd but I want that interaction to feel special and like something you earned through spending. Technically clicking them initially is a free pet, just want the mini-games to feel special and calculated.
Hey Vivid!
I tried the latest version and am loving the new changes. I could not recereate the old bug so I think it is fixed.
The particle effects with cats are nice and I like the new heart animation.
Also like the fact that all cats do not wants pets in the new mini game. Very cat like behavior.
I did other stuff to try and break the game and found the following.
By placing cat treats on certain parts of the map you can essentially lock some cats in the loop of going after a treat not getting it and becoming angry. I will attach screenshots.
Another QoL change I would like is switching the minigame when a new one is pressed. The game detects another minigame is on which makes the player deselect and then select. I think it should just switch by auto deselecting.
Cat teats on the edges take more time to get consumed which makes perfect sense.
Found another small bug near the old man. When two cats get close to him sometimes on gets stuck between table and him ad keeps flipping left and right making it feel wonky. Maybe to fix you can move the oldman a few pixels up.
Apart from this I noticed that higher level upgrades are not worth the price. for instance I spent 20000 on furniture upgrade and I only get a few dollars extra every second. If I do the math it would take forever to make back that amount spent on the upgrade. This could be intentional game design but wanted to point it out anyway! It seems the higher upgrades have largely diminishing returns.
As always,
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
I appreciate you finding those bug and for the feedback. Will work on getting them fixed Asap. Thanks again for taking the time to test it out.
When you get to the Upgrade screen you see the Upgrade button. Clicking on it shows the new quantity selection buttons. Switching between upgrades it does not go back to the single button. When I exit and return it does. Is there a reason to keep the basic Upgrade button? I think it would be better to just show the quantity buttons all the time. When I press Upgrade the first time I expect it to purchase the first one, but it just shows the quantities. If keeping it, it would be nice it the first press did purchase 1. I also will plan to buy multiple and be used to the old system so I'll click on Upgrade twice, planning to buy 2, and perhaps ending up with 11, depending on where I clicked.
I really like the design you have for the cats and upgrades, with the top and bottom bars framing an image. The top and bottom do a great job of giving you place for text that fits the styling.
I got the (non-single use) upgrades up to level 10+, and then let it sit on the side for a while. I think the extra interactions and the effects from them help to keep it more interesting having it just running in the background. There is plenty of movement and things happening. I left it going for a while as I played other jam games. Coming back to buy upgrades and such from time to time. I got the upgrades up to level 100, with a cafe level of 521+. I played around with the mini-games. They work well, and you'll quickly have enough money to do them as often as you want. I certainly like the ability to purchase many at a time for these. It is also nice for the regular upgrades, but especially the consumables.
I don't really have much else right now from this playthrough.
I think the upgrade button being removed all together is actually a decent idea, I will look into it, a lot cleaner and less likely for a misclick that way. I'm glad that the game is satisfying as an idle game, I think all of the movement and sound is really one of my favorite parts so glad you like it. I'll look into adjusting a few things for the final version, thank you so much for your feedback!
Hi Vivid!
Regarding the new mini-games, I like putting the cat pads on the floor so that nearby cats will run to it. I don't use the extra pats that much. But these extra interactions bring quite a charm to the game.
Since you're asking about bugs, changes, or edits. I didn't ran into any particular bugs as I played it.
Things I would definitely add to add more enjoyment for the game is having more distinct cat behaviors. The flavor text when adopting cats mention they have different personalities, but as you adopt them, they all seem to behave very similarly. It would be immensely better if they have different behavior that can be understood at a glance. One thing as an example that I can think of is that shier cats would probably stay closer to the edge of the cafe, so that customer need to walk to them to play with them. The thing is, after you adopted the cat, you can't really read the flavor text of each cat's personality anymore (can you?). Which is OK as long as there is a distinct way to tell their personalities apart from their visual movement or behavior.
Let me know if you're already working on it so I don't have to comment these next time :D
Also, since you have different mouse cursor for the mini-games... Maybe it would add some charm if there also unique cursors when hovering the cats to increase their comfort and hovering over the players to get the cash.
I like that you made some changes to the cafe as you make the upgrades! Particular, I was slowly maxing out the furniture to level 30, and can definitely see the changes as you level them up. Although, I would love to see more drastic changes between level. Currently, the difference is quite sparse, but it is at least something rather than none. This is probably the current weakness of the game that I feel. The current upgrade progression, doesn't bring that enough anticipation, yet.
Small nitpicks from me regarding the cat sprites. Some of the cats look almost identical to each other, such as Luna and Snow, both have white sprites. So I can't tell whom are whom when they're running around without hovering on them. It would be great if you could add some stripes to just differentiate them. Also is the same for Nyx and Bandit, while they have slightly different shade, they're pretty much identical at a glance.
I felt the game has improved considerably in terms of polish compared to last time. The effects when the cats are dashing, and when they interact with customers are so lovely. Good on job on the progress!
Thank you so much for your feedback Abstract!
I like the idea of having different cursors for interacting with cats and customers, I will consider it something to add. The cats do have different behaviors in the cafe but I think it is not clear enough to notice unless you know what to look for. Most of their behavior differences are related to how they interact with other cats and customers. For example the cats that sprint across the cafe randomly are supposed to be the shy cats running away from other cats. I just need to do a better job defining behavior and making it more obvious. Their personality types names don't appear in the cafe, that would be a good thing to add.
I will look at tweaking to balance of upgrades so they feel more rewarding and impactful. It is supposed to be a big part of the game loop so I'll for sure tweak it.
This is so CUTE! 😍 I love the idea of having a Cat Cafe.
New player perspective:
I personally found the font a little bit hard to read, and while playing, it wasn't immediately clear what the customer wanted or what I had to do with him. I just clicked, saw the $5 and they went to a table. Also it isn't clear to me why the money is going up constantly if there is just one client that only paid $5. Once I clicked on the customer the game finally opened up and understood it.
I still had to figure out what clicking on a cat did exactly. What is the number 28.0? I understand it's increasing its comfort. However the comfort bar only goes up after I have selected another cat and then came back to the one I clicked on.
The only bug I found is that while using the Super laser, when I clicked, it disappeared (only the countdown showed next to the mouse pointer). Clicking again brought it back.
I really really liked the interactions between cats and customers, and cats among themselves. It's sooo cute <3
Thank you so much for your feedback! I will see what I can do to make things more clear and fix the bugs. Thank you for taking the time to try it out!
