I'm going to start this off by saying I'm not a very big fan of visual novels, so take my review with a grain of salt.  I'm not sure if this is standard for renpy games, but I would have loved to see more areas of the neighborhood, some minigames, or maybe just more art of Jacquie. I think you have a nice aesthetic and a cute character but I feel like it maybe the player needs more of a reason to ask her the 13 questions other than to just send her away. I would love to see you continue either working on this/making more games because I believe you are a good writer and just need it supported by other engaging aspects.

I played this game for 40 minutes trying to close all the tabs on the board. It is unfortunate that this game is based off of a game that seems very luck based. I was determined to win but I don't think I have enough patience.   Sometimes it felt like I had to press pray over 20 times on occasion which got a little annoying as well. The sound for the die was very satisfying and the monster had a cool design. I think it would be cool to find a way to spice up the "shut the box game" so it has some other kind of way to play it. Otherwise keep it up!

I think the idea and the theming behind this game is very unique/original. I like the idea of trying to get a high score in the time limit. Ofc the time constraints for this jam may have made this difficult but I wish there was some kind of horror aspect involved. I think it could've been cool to find the right item and sell it in time before it turned into some kind of monster giving the game more stakes. I really like what you made and I think you guys should keep working on it!

Thought it was only fair that we left a video review for your game as well. We think you guys did an amazing job!

I think the idea is fun but a little basic. I think with this, you are somewhat limited by the balloon toss game but if there is another way to spice it up that would be interesting.  As a disclaimer, the balloons on the left 2 rows don't feel very responsive. I'm not sure why but they are a lot harder to hit. I wanted to give this game a shot and a review because like ours, its a big game that you have to download, and I'm glad I did. Nice job.

This game was quite frustrating at some points. Dying at 0 meters send you back to 400 meters which felt a bit unfair. If you look at the wall during the monster encounters, it feel like his position locks on to the wall that you look at even if you are trying to look away from it. To be fair the people watching me play this did enjoy the "hell" I was going through when playing. I was extremely determined to get to the end because i hoped there was going to be some form of payoff but there unfortunately wasn't. I guess there's no payoff in hell... Personally it felt like the game lacked the little things.  Maybe new textures on the tunnel every once in a while, maybe the tunnel changes shape, maybe there's a fork in the road, maybe there's a random sound effect that plays. Things of those nature. Given the time frame I can understand how that may be difficult to implement, but maybe something to note for the future. I will say I did enjoy having to use sound to avoid the monster and the monsters design was interesting but could definitely be improved upon in terms of textures so it looks more menacing. I believe you have a cool concept here and this could be a good project to continue working on in the future.

I really like the environment design. The sounds and atmosphere were quite creepy. I wish there was a lot more though. I replayed the game to see if I had missed a mechanic but it seems like you walk around and then lose.  If this were the case it would be cool if there was a jump scare at the end. I would love to see the story expanded/create more levels to the store so there is more reason for exploration

The itch sandbox tool is claiming your game is a virus. you may be able to update the page to include a different way to play the game.

This game definitely has a learning curve, which is fine. I like the sound effects for the buttons and especially for the bag. The how-to helps but you forget most of the mechanics by the time you start playing. I wish the item descriptions showed up faster and that the bestiary maybe made the timer slow down? It felt hard to navigate it while being stressed about the timer running down. Otherwise, great game with a great concept!

I believe there is always a reason to try. Even if what you make today isn't amazing, there's a good chance you learn for your next attempt. We go into these challenges wanting to win but that's not the only outcome. Hope to see you apply yourself in the future.

I really like the art and the character animations. As far as the game goes, its quite simple which is fine for a vampire survivors like game. I think it would be cool if the bats maybe moved a bit slower, but made them invisible until they have the flashlight on them.

(1 edit)

I had fun beating this. The art style is great and so are the puzzle concepts. It feels a little weird to have a majority of the controls on one hand (all of them if you don't use right shift for dash). I do want to let you know, I am getting some performance issues in the "inside" section. I'm not sure if it applies to everyone but it did happen to me. There are a couple instances of having to restart the level for unfair reasons. For example, I'm not able to get on the other side of a box because I accidentally pushed it too far to the wall or its on the edge of a ledge, or I push a box into another box and now neither of them can move. Not sure if these were intended or not but they do exist. Otherwise, amazing job, I'm excited to try and play more levels in the future.

I think this game has something special. I really like the art direction and the feel of the environment. However, in my personal opinion, this game would be an amazing puzzle game. The introduction to the puzzle mechanic doesn't really have a payoff and i wish it did, its a super cool idea.  The rougelite aspect seems a little out of place especially given the layout of the controls. Having the heavy attack be the same action as the move object action makes the combat feel somewhat clunky. Sometimes you will accidentally lock onto bookshelves/boxes when you are trying to heavy attack. I beat the first 3 difficulties and I found that the ranged guys feel a little overtuned. It feels like they nuke you and the rooms are too small/cluttered to be able to dodge the projectiles. They also take 3+ hits even with using a full damage build. In comparison to the rooms the boss battle actually feels a bit easy. Aside from these comments I have, I do want to congratulate you guys. You def put alot of work into this game and should be proud of what you were able to do in the time given. There was a lot of attention to detail in this game. Almost every action is sound designed and has animation. The main menu screen is very fun and so is the loading screen. The MC falling apart while loosing health is very cool as well. You adhered to the theme very well and made a great game. Good job.

Just wanted to let you know, there is no return to main option from the tutorial mode.

This was my favorite game from the jam! While quite simple, the gameplay loop was engaging and I wanted to get to the 20 mark. There is somewhat of a "meta" when it comes to evading the ghosts but it gets pretty difficult without using that strategy. I am also very surprised at how fast you were able to put this together. I don't want to say any spoilers, but I'm afraid a lot of people playing the game will not get to experience the effort you put in. Amazing work.

Im taking my review back. This game was phenomenal after playing it through again. leaving a more in depth review in the submissions page.

I really love the theme for this one. The spatial audio was a very fun choice and does help withe the atmosphere. Would love to see some form of progression where we learn more about the family and/or what happened to them.  Also the game is quite difficult, not sure if its because of the camera or the map layout but the traversal was tricky. Interested to see what happens to the protagonist!

Thank you so much for the detailed review! I also appreciate the disclaimer on the virus.

I am going to try my best to answer most of the concerns/comments to my best of the ability. To start off I am the sound/composer/creative guy.  I 100% agree with you on the difficulty of the game. We want to turn the game into some form of "infinite rounds like" game where the monster has some form of intelligence and gets better at giving the "correct" answer as the rounds pass by. But, as we only had the limited time for the jam, we wanted to give the player a "complete experience" for the time being. One thing I was surprised about and you may be surprised about as well was how often play testers would guess based on the character look/animation/actual personality and not their adherence to description. This may be due somewhat to our delivery of instruction which we will try to improve.

As for the topic on subtitles/VA when we gave them the scripts, some decided to take a little creative liberty which for the most part was welcomed. We decided to keep the original performances instead of making them re-record them for time/creative reasons as we felt it gave some of the characters more personality. We will fix the subtitles to be more accurate (except for Jianguo, its part of the bit).

During playtesting we also ran into some pc's giving the virus warning and some not. We will look deeper into this issue and try to find a fix for it. We have also ran into some performance issues on first time launches which we will try to improve as well.

Thank you again for the feedback and would love to hear anything else you and/or anyone else that would like to say.

Thank you! Ngl we did not realize how much dialogue we actually had to put in the game. There's around 290 voice lines which was def a little overambitious.

I don't think there's an exe to play this. Hopefully they let u update it. i really want to try it!

Wow i was not expecting that. Pretty cool.
