Ranked from 83 ratings. Score is adjusted from raw score by the median number of ratings per game in the jam.

How does the game fit the theme?
MECHANICALLY
(1) Active Reload - Every time you reload, you can choose to press r at the right time to reload instantly, but if you fail you take longer than you would've if you hadn't *and* you generate heat.

(2) Heat - You have a heat meter that goes up whenever you fail an active reload, take damage, or accept an offer at the end of a room to increase it. The more toasted you get the better your stats, but be careful! If you end up Burnt then you lose all your heat bonuses and die in one hit.

(3) Find a better weapon... There are 9 unique weapons to find, if you feel too weak to beat the boss maybe you're better off looking for another weapon - the mythical Golden Baguette all but guarantees victory. But to get that loot, you have to combat deadly foes, increasing your chance of dying!

THEMATICALLY
You play as a biscuit dough dog going to rescue your biscuit dough human from the horrible Bungeon in the Oven, risking it all for the biscuit.

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
Some of the engine infrastructure already existed (using our own engine!) but nearly everything else code wise came from scratch this week.

Font - Love Bug by Chevy Ray

Enemy Spawn Effect - Free Effect and Bullet 16x16 by BDragon1727

Tileset (altered) - 2D PIxel Dungeon Asset Pack by Pixel_Poem

Also features a "victory chime"-y sound effect I (ephemerald) made like a year ago and, uh, https://www.cornify.com/

Very cool game with a very original risk-reward mechanic that I really liked! Great graphics, great audio, enemy variety was fun, boss was fun aswell. I didn't really find any problem, it was fun to play! Great job!

The art is pretty good. Gameplay is polished and fun. The enemy AI is pretty good as well since they were trying to run, avoid and shoot me at distance which give challenges

I loved this game so much, I would love to beat a full version!

Pretty cool and fun game, nice visuals and sound effects, and pretty well polished overall. Now, the active reload on some weapon is kinda unfair, for the green gun, it is okay, for the pink and yellow thing not so much, it is just better to not try it, needs to be improved in that regard. The bread sucks and is not fun to use. The heat mechanic is a cool idea, but could've been explained better, the idea of dying insta kill after burning yourself is not fun, as I didn't even know what was happening, maybe with some sort of indication it could work better.

I don't know if I was doing something wrong, but sometimes when I moved to new rooms, I would insta take damages as the enemy spawned extremely close to where I enter. Also, I feel I kinda didn't have an incentive to explore new rooms after a while, thus I didn't find any new guns except for the ones I talked earlier.

What I also noticed that could be improved, is that when using a range weapon, and you are very close, I mainly noticed this with the boss, the shoots would ignore him, so you would need to step back a little for all shots to connect.

Overall, this is a cool game with a pretty cool idea, with more polishing and fine tuning, it can be a pretty good game, it has a lot of potential.

Developer

Thanks for the detailed feedback! I pretty much agree on all points. The reload windows are different to give each gun a different feeling, but you’re right some of them are unfairly tight. Wish we had time for more testing! Incidentally in my testing I felt the baguette was stronger than the piping bag but clearly the popular opinion is the opposite, will likely buff it to two-shot the basic enemies instead of taking three as it does currently. It also has the bonus ability to get extra pickups off dead enemies if you hit them enough but that’s just supposed to be a silly bonus and not something to rely on.

There are three health pickups on the map, and the golden baguette and especially golden croissants make the game very easy to beat if you find them (and they’re guaranteed to be available on each map I believe). But yeah, we need more ways to incentivize players to explore and making enemy spawning have more of a warning makes a lot of sense.

Also wasn’t aware of the glitch you mentioned about being too close to enemies, would love to solve that! Super appreciate you taking the time to play and put so much thought into it :)

Enjoyed playing your game! The music is awesome and helps you to dive into the flow of the game. The visuals are very nice too. The game itself is a bit too hard for me, but I rarely play this genre. Still, from the start, I can feel that you made enemy behavior and your weapon mechanic feel unique, well done.

Developer(+1)

I think it’s too hard for sure, but I appreciate you looking past that :) Glad you enjoyed it, sorry we couldn’t have given a smoother experience!

Cute game! Really cool dungeon generation.

Developer

Thanks! :) actually there isn’t dungeon generation (yet), we were really hoping to get that in

A very fun rogulike game! I especially liked the visual and audio!!! Recharge sounds and other self-recorded sounds are very cute:3

Developer

Thanks so much :) I had intended to do way more “normal” sound effects but ran low on time, these were super fun to record and get together quickly!

Very fun game! I did not get far enough in the dungeon to rescue anyone, but I did find the golden bread, and died. I might try again to beat the Muffin Man (lives on drury lane?) now that I read the thing and realized there was a roll dodge lol. I thought melee was way too hard in this game

Developer

Well to be fair the person you rescue is just… a biscuit. and then you get quite a uh colorful victory screen :P Definitely wish we had been able to get a tutorial in there too. I felt like melee was too strong in my playtesting so I guess I might’ve overreacted by weakening it, my bad! Thanks for playing!

Super cool game! Very much enjoyed the movement, most of the combat, and the reloading mechanic was a really nice touch. Having a boss in there is a very good addition and adds a ton to the game in my opinion. The game also seemed quite well polished, music/SFX were great, and the art was amazing! Overall I'd say really nice job, only point of feedback I'd give is that the game needs some balancing for certain weapons, and a bit of a better explanation for the heat mechanic. It would also be nice to be able to click the buttons that show up at the end of a room to increase heat. Other than that, really good entry!

Developer(+1)

Yeah agreed on all points! Thanks for playing and glad you enjoyed :)

Combat felt mostly good and the weapon variety definitely spiced things up from round to round.  I only say 'mostly' since my first run I got the melee baguette item, which seemed underpowered.  The main thing I noticed was that it didn't seem to hit and knockback the floaty guys as I would have expected.  My favorite gun that ultimately pushed me through to the end of the game was the croissant.  Seemed to have good balance all around.

I love that y'all were able to get a boss in the mix.  It provides strong motivation to go charge up your toastiness in the dungeon before heading into the final battle.  I did encounter a weird bug in my boss fight.  I had gotten their HP all the way down, but then the HP bar started going negative with the 'lich' muffin continuing to fire at me.  After sticking around for a sec to see if I had a second form coming my way, I stumbled upon the finale bread, so luckily I could still claim the W.

After figuring out how it worked, the toastyness does seem like a cool mechanic.  It should definitely get a bit more explicit instruction in the game, however.  The immediate slow-down effect was great intrinsic feedback that I done goofed.  The insta-kill some time afterward was not so clearly tied to that overcooked event.

Overall pretty fun!  The multi-modal boss fight was a very cool encounter.  Also liked that final bread collection sequence.

Developer

Yeah, I wish we had been able to explain the heat mechanic better and the boss was unfortunately bugged as you discovered. The idea was that as you become burnt you sorta crumble and fall apart more easily? But completely agree it’s not explained at all in game and my explanations here on the rating page probably don’t do enough to signpost it. If we get to develop this further a tutorial would for sure be high on the list of things to do! Thanks for playing and leaving such good feedback :)

Lovely game! It's incredible to see how much was done in just one week. It plays as good as any well polished roguelike bullet hell, if not better! I love the reload mechanic, the enemy types are interesting and the whole gameplay is really fast paced and fun, not to mention the awesome art and music/sfx! Very enjoyable!

Developer(+1)

Wow, thanks so much! :) We had a ton of fun making it!

I really enjoyed playing this, and I want to congratulate you on such a successful game jam submission. Everything looks and feels very polished, the gameplay is a unique blend of 2D Shoot em up, bullet hell and kind of metroidvania since it's the same map as far as I can tell, which I really enjoyed.

I really enjoyed the thematic and the details, like little animations and sound effects, makes the game feel 'tactile'. I tried going around with the bread, but it felt too weak compared to the gun, so I need to refine my melee playstyle. Well done to the team :)

Developer

Thanks so much! :) I actually think the baguette is stronger but it’s definitely a lot riskier an option. Maybe it should’ve killed the basic bread guys in two hits instead of three. We had intended to do random layouts but had to scrap that due to time, but also after like 100 hours in Elden Ring: Nightreign I’m starting to come around to the idea of roguelikes where the map isn’t (all that) different each time, gives you the ability to learn it and master it in a way random dungeons don’t. If we were to develop this further, do you think we should stick to fixed layouts?

Nice game! Very engaging and has fun sprites and music. Well done.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it :)

i love cute games like this. l like the  graphics, music and sounds. i like the shooting dynamics, the map layout. just need to not make initial enemies to powerful. one shot should kill them, then they progressively get harder. kept me from further exploring the environment.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback! I don’t know if I agree they should die in one hit, but I do agree they could be a lot easier at first. Sorry for the bad pacing but glad you enjoyed the rest of it :)

Submitted(+1)

Right, not necessarily one hit. :)

I admire the amount of work that went into this! Such a rich entry. Multiple weapons, enemy AI, lots of animated sprites, fog of war, a boss fight, an ending cutscene... that's a lot! Good old entertaining classic gameplay. The production value was very good all around. I enjoyed storming the bungeon with my perfectly toasted croissant. I sent the boss to negative health, but they didn't disappear. I still got the prize though.

Very impressive, amazing work!

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much! I definitely maybe worked an unhealthy amount last week 😅 The boss got away from us and we were trying to fix it up til the deadline, glad the biscuit spawning works even though he doesn’t go away.

Submitted(+2)

Was very fun to play, the art was beautiful, the music fits the game, abilities are different between them.

Very good work!

Thanks so much :) I’m still astonished at how well our artist knocked it out of the park in so little time

I really liked this game, especially the range of weapons. The enemies and Main character's design also have a certain charm to them.

Developer

Thanks :) we really enjoyed making the enemies and have sooo many more ideas…

I have to say i love the idea of using donuts and their "center" as another enemy
