Feedback Before Printing

Brave adventurers, scheming rogues, overworked merchants, and suspiciously organized necromancers...

The FIRST digital version of the Quest Planner has been unleashed upon the realm.

Now comes the important part: 🛠️ Finding the cracks before the scribes lock the tome away for printing.

Over the next couple of weeks, this is your chance to help shape the final version before it is forged into physical form.

Found a spelling mistake?
Discovered a confusing rule?
Accidentally became infinitely wealthy through a suspiciously legal goblin loophole?
Spotted a balance issue, exploit, or page that feels clunky?

We want to hear it.

Please keep feedback respectful and constructive. “This page is broken because…” helps far more than “THE DARK MAGIC IS RUINED FOREVER.”

The goal is simple:
Make this planner the best possible experience before it marches to the printing presses.

Thank you again for helping bring The Quest Planner to life. Now go forth... and please report any economy-breaking wizard crimes immediately.

I haven't found anything of significant error.  Looks great

Developer

Thanks for checking for us.

Did you play through it or just read so far?

Just read thru it.

Hi! I have a few things. I marked up the PDF. I can share it from my Google Drive. I hope this works. I haven't finished going through the entire thing, but I wanted to share what I was able to do so far. Happy to discuss further, if my notations do not make sense.

Developer

Wow! Tons of notes. I will be sure to go through all these.

Thanks for taking all this time.

Please implement all the changes they noted - excellent work!

Page 40, Room E has two incompatible results for 7 or more and then 8 or less.

There isn't any explanation for the section with DEF and ATK. You have a max but it doesn't say if you start with that or start at 0 and can get up to that?

Developer

Ok, I addressed page 40 for both rooms B and E. Thanks!

For this comment, I'd like some clarity. Let's discuss.
"There isn't any explanation for the section with DEF and ATK. You have a max but it doesn't say if you start with that or start at 0 and can get up to that?"

...
For the Traits (Str, Dex, Con, etc.) and Stats (HP, Def, Atk, Dmg) there are places for the "current value" and the "max value."

It is common and likely clear that with HP, your value can drop below the max as you take damage. So a blank "current value" is there to keep track of this.

As you level up, you get to increase your Traits. That is why we didn't put in the starting values for these into the boxes.

Also, you get bonuses from items you equip to both Traits and Stats.

It is also possible through death penalties that your Traits and Stats may drop below their max.

We want you to have room to make changes to these as your character progresses. But also note what the values should be.

Perhaps we can make the following changes.

As I've written this out, I'm considering the following changes:

Remove the "max" text for both Stats and Traits. Place the numbers for the Traits in the larger box on the left. That would allow the smaller box to exist for changes from death and equipment boosts.

What do you think?

That's how I've been playing it but it isn't clear - especially for new players - what number to start with. If you included a small section in the rules part explaining what number to start with, I think that would clear it up fine without having to change the actual page.

I found a couple things in the front materials and I have the first month printed out and pasted into my planner for playtesting.

p. 7 - Chrono-Grid: The quote seems unfinished and is missing an end quotation mark.

p 8-9 - Play Modifier: One of the rectangles on the top of the left page in the weekly spread is indicated as being a Play modifier. But when I scrolled through, none of the weekly pages have a play modifier there. Are we supposed to create these (I didn't see any indication of that), or did you forget to create them there? There are also play modifiers on the daily pages, so I don't know if maybe you decided to move them but then forgot to delete them from the weekly example.

I also found the rules for combat slightly vague when it comes to multiple enemies. Do I fight them one at a time? Do I roll and attempt to attack all of them in each round? Do I attack one, but they all attack me? I sort of just decided how I wanted to do it and went with it for the sewer rat encounters, but it would have been nice to have more guidance on that, especially if I weren't someone with RPG experience.

Developer

Regarding the combat ambiguity. I will add some text in the rules and on the first page with combat.

Focus on one enemy at a time. It is easier to keep track of combat this way.

What did you choose?

I just went down the list of enemies, starting at the top. But I let each one in an encounter attack me each round until they were dead. This may have been harder than intended though. It meant I couldn't attack the harder enemies first, but they were attacking me the whole time. And that might explain why I'm almost constantly on the brink of death.

Developer

Wow, that would be harder if an enemy was attacking you and you couldn't attack it.

I see where you are coming from with past experience if you were surrounded by enemies. Everyone gets to go in one round.

In this case, no. You fight one enemy at a time and only move on when you kill it.

I added

"Focus on one enemy at a time:
1...
2...
3...
4...
5. Earn your reward. Once the enemy DIES, gain the gold reward listed. Move to the next enemy if there is one."

Developer

p7 : Nice Catch!

p8-9 : Yes, we decided to remove them from the weekly page. I will adjust on the instruction images.

Thanks!

The monthly pages are set up with a Sunday start (which I like), and the daily pages have Su as the first day you can circle. Which makes it really weird that the weekly pages are a Monday start. It doesn't really matter which way you do it. But consistency would be preferable.

Developer (2 edits)

And the Habbits also start with Sunday!

The solution has been racking my brain because it isn't easy.

Since there are an odd number of days in a week, AND since most people don't work on the weekend, we combined Saturday and Sunday into the same space as the other days. It helped us keep enough room here to have the story at the bottom.

There is no easy way to re-arrange these and maintain the same space.

So the options are either:

A) Start the monthly pages with Monday (which goes against the norm in the US). We would then have the Habits and Daily Pages also start with Monday.

B) Have the days of Weekly pages set the same as the daily pages, with "Su M T W Th F Sa". But this adds more work for you, the player, to do this every week. However, as a bonus, someone did comment that they work on the weekend and would like more space for Sat and Sun.

Thoughts?

I homeschool and my husband works 6 days a week, so my weekends tend to be just as busy or busier than my week. When I set up my weeklies in my bullet journal, I give every day the same amount of room. But I tend to do more of a dashboard weekly, with tiny boxes to write events and dinner plans in, then a lot of free space for daily notes as the week goes on. I don't normally have a daily page when I'm making my own. But I don't see how you could skip a daily with what you're trying to achieve.

My only recommendation would be to split the week over the two pages, and give the dotted notes section the same amount of space as a day. So it would give you symmetrical pages with 4 spaces on each page. I can provide pictures of my personal planner where I've done that, though it obviously wouldn't have the quest stuff on the page.

Developer

I ended up splitting the days into 8 equal spaces and startign on Sunday.

The 8th day is blank for whatever you may need and wish to label it. For example, the things you know you need to get done that week, but don't have a specific day planned for it.

I will post the updated version soon.

p. 62 I'm questing along and get a pet. It says review the rules for pets. I am struggling to find the rules for pets. Is it really just the one sentence in the Party Members section? So they get written down as a party member? What do I write in the boxes on the sheet? There aren't really any instructions for the character sheet pages at all. Which is fine for the spaces that are just for recording how many you have of something. But is a little less fine for spaces that might hold other information.

As an aside: I didn't know it when it started, but June was the perfect month for me to playtest this thing. It's been so many fires to put out, that I don't have a lot of brain power left to figure things out on my own (even if they aren't that complicated and should probably be fairly easy for someone who's been playing TTRPGs since 2e D&D to just decide what makes sense). Which means every time I have to look up a rule, I'm as dumb as I can possibly manage. And that makes it easy for me to just be like, "Well, that's not very clear." Which will hopefully pay off for the future people using this journal with a lot less TTRPG experience.

Developer

Ah yes, a Pet is a Party Member, and this area does need clarification.

Also, I will be adding Stickers to the Physical version (digital Stickers here) for both Equipment and Party Memebers. Physically, you will be able to peel them off and place them in the Equipment or Party Member section. You will see that the Followers and Pets have different sizes for the different boxes.

Without using the stickers it would be advisable to write down the Party Member's Name and Ability in the boxes provided.

Here is the updated description. Is there anything else you think I should add?

There are pages when you can hire party members to accompany you. They can give your hero access to abilities they might not know, or grant an additional bonus if the ability/skill is already known.
You may need to pay an initial fee to hire the party member. Then, assign them to an open spot in your party. There are 8 slots available on the inventory pages for party members. You may have up to 4 followers (the larger boxes) and 4 pets (the smaller boxes). You may use the stickers in the physical version of the game to place in the boxes or write in the abilities you now have access to.
You can switch these out when you rest and on days when you acquire a new Follower or Pet. If you should die, one can will be taken from you (see 'Dealing with Death').

Your input is truly valuable!!

Rules clarifications are always tricky. Even something that might be simple for 99% of players can stump one player and ruin their experience. Familiarity, clarity, brain fog, and interruption in reading ... anything can cause this. It is hard to avoid completely, but I want to stomp it out whenever possible.

That is a lot clearer. When trying to figure it out just from looking, I thought that it was 4 sets of boxes, with a tall one and a short one working as two pieces for one party member. It makes sense that the pets get the small spaces and the followers get the big spaces, but my brain fully didn't see that until this explanation.

And I want to give enthusiastic support for the stickers. I was actually thinking as I wrote down my first follower, "It would be cool to just have a sticker to plop in this box so I could have the nice art there." And I love that they'll be provided for the digital version too.

Before you get this explanation put anywhere resembling permanent though, your last sentence seems to have an extra word. "can will" Or maybe you meant to include an "and" in there. I don't know. It could be fixed a half dozen ways and it's just a grammar nitpick for what is the equivalent of an early draft.

In using the daily spreads, I find that I frequently forget to check the little quest box with things like, "Complete 3 tasks before equipping an item." Because it's on the bottom of the right hand page and we read starting at the top left, by the time I get over to that, I've already done whatever the thing is that it wants me to wait for. You could swap the two pages in the daily spread, but then that puts the scheduling area on the left hand side, which can be awkward to write on in a bound journal. Putting it on the same page as the quest messes up your formatting over there. So, I don't know that I have useful feedback on this, so much as just pointing out a bit that doesn't seem to work as intended.

Developer

This still helps.

Do you view both pages at a time? Did you print it out or are you using it in a pdf reader. If a pdf reader, is it both pages side by side?

I suspect when viewing digitally, most likely won't see the planner (right) side of the spread. My hope is that when printed, it will be easily viewed and stick out, hard to miss.

I printed it out on sticker paper and pasted it in my usual planner. So I'm seeing both pages at once. My planner is an A5 and the printed pages are about an inch smaller.

Pg 85 - It states that I'll be rolling dmg for the spider, but then shows a static dmg # rather than a die #.

P 32 - it says Holly Water, rather than Holy Water.

Developer

Nice. Because of this, I went through and found a similar error on a different page.
