Hello everyone! I'm a pixel artist and animator looking to join someone in game development.

I'm 33 years old, I know age is important for some to know. I was the one responsible for the art and animation in the game Midnight Special. I'm currently developing an original top-down pixel RPG in Godot. I can work solo, but I'd like to find the right person or team to build something with long-term.

I've learned from the past collaboration, so I want to be upfront about how I work and what I expect from a partner:

What I'm looking for:

* A clear scope from the start ➡️ what role I'm being brought on for, and if that changes, we discuss and agree to it before it happens, not after.

* Agreed payment terms that are honoured on time, as agreed. OR revenue share ➡️ percentage based on my involvement, put in a contract.

* Clear communication from you too ➡️ what you expect of me, and what your own boundaries are, stated up front rather than assumed.

* A professional working relationship first. Friendship can grow naturally, but it's not the basis of how we work together or how I get paid/treated.

* If we agree on something ➡️ scope, credit, equity, decision-making. I expect that agreement to hold. Not renegotiated later because it's inconvenient.

* Respect for my time and boundaries, and clear, honest communication throughout.

* A sustainable pace. Game development should be consistent, but most of us have day jobs and lives, it doesn't get to override everything else all the time.

What I will not tolerate:

* Gaslighting, guilt-tripping, or minimizing my concerns ("sorry you feel that way").

* Hostility or foul language directed at people who disagree with you or critique the game. Opinions are fine but keep them respectful, or keep them to yourself.

* Boundary pushing after I've stated a limit.

* Repeated, significant delays on agreed monthly payments, especially with recurring excuses. Life happens occasionally, a pattern is a different thing.

* Misrepresenting me to third parties, or disputing payment for work that's already been delivered and accepted, out of spite after a disagreement.

I know this may sound like a lot, but what I'm essentially saying is: I'm looking for a normal person/team that wants to work on games, states their boundaries and expectations clearly, while respecting mine.

Your work is amazing!

I understand the need for clarifications regarding long-term projects, but do you accept game jams? I know it might be a somewhat awkward question, but I think you might be looking for work for your portfolio, I don't know.

Thank you!

It's not an awkward question at all! But I'm definitely not looking to expand my portfolio, currently. Midnight Special is my portfolio. I worked on all the visuals and animations for about 3 years, before I left the project.
I'm not going for game jams at the moment. Because they're more time limited, work needs to be done faster and I don't have a lot the free time that allows it.

Love the color palette choices, the shading and the color transitions. Very 90's style, reminds me a lot to my Commodore Amiga 500 childhood times. Love the macabre dark art too, I grew up playing Elvira RPG and stuff like that too back them, those were nightmare inducing games with very stunning visuals too. Good stuff man.

Good luck finding a team, is really hard these days, I have worked on some projects before and some jams, I do music myself. It is tough out there let me tell you, so I totally understand where you're coming from with that upfront clarification, I experienced nasty situations before as well, there is really awful people around, nor committed nor passionate, nor respectful, entitled, backstabbing straight up thefts or people who suddenly disappears one day leaving the project. Don't want to trash young people but my best suggestion is to find a team that ranges from 30+ age and above, serious, respectful, mature, educated and honest people that grew up through the golden age of videogaming culture that have passionate heart about what they do. The worst experiences I have faced the last years were always involving gen-z people, is always the same thing over and over with them, they have no work ethic, no values, does not respect intellectual property, they constantly lie and made up excuses, they have no drive, I ended up even leading multiple projects myself even though I wasn't the head developer but the project was crumbling and I had to take initiative and tell the gen-z dudes what to do, then half the people always left the project, scared, ghost you and disappear. Truly awful man, get in touch with grounded mature people instead, is the best advice I can give to you and best of luck because you deserve success with such talent.

I really appreciate the time you took to write all of this for me, truly 🌠 I can definitely see that you have great experience with dealing, with people. I am sorry to hear what you've gone through. I know its not easy, I just want to at least try, before going back working solo.

I don't have people around my age that I know, that work on games, unfortunately. That's why I'm trying places.
I appreciate your compliments about my art too! The 90's style was the goal, especially the first few images that are from Midnight Special.

I wish you all the best, my friend. Once again, thank you for sharing your struggles with me, as well as the advice.

Hello There!

Im working on a game project, just hobby for now, but if it turns out good, id like to put it on steam. Its a 2d sidescrolling cyberpunkish incremental platformer game set in the same universe as a previous game a friend and I made, called Neon Colony, available on steam. That game is in isometric perspective and i would like some of our sprites, to be converted to 2d animated sprite sheets.

If your're interested we can maybe work something out. I think it would be a few bite sized commisioned jobs. To be perfectly honest, its my first time asking for such things, so no idea what prices are for such jobs and if thats something my hobby budget allows. Ill add a picture of an example enemy sprite id like to to have as a 2d animated little fellow:

the sprites dont have to be to detailed, just nice simple and clean to fit the aestehic of the rest of the game

Best

Thank you for reaching out! I had a look at your post a little before I made mine.
While it is not something I am looking for. The idea behind your game is very intriguing, and I wish you all the best in your game development!

Hello, I'm 47 years old so I lived the DOS Games era and actually I'm developing THE TAPEWORM, a Point & Click Adventure heavily inspired in Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. The game is 100% coded and playable from start to finish, and I'm looking a pixel artist to replace the placeholder graphics of the Alpha with the definitive pixel art. Check it in case you're interested:

Hello there, good evening! Thank you for reaching out. I just checked your post and read through a bit about your background in your website. I have to say, I am impressed. Both by the drive for film making with all the awards, and game development. I've also studied filmmaking, but it was focused on animation since this was my major. Could you tell me what art role you want me to fill? I'm assuming its the art for the game's backgrounds, since this is what you've last commented on your post?

Hi, thanks for your kind words about my background. Being a filmmaker has been incredibly helpful in developing the game from a narrative and structural standpoint, and it's a perfect way of coming full circle since the game originated from a short film. The post has been up for over a month, and I've been contacted by many composers and a couple of animators. I've already filled those positions, and the role I'm currently seeking is that of a pixel artist for all the game's "static" content, which includes rooms, cinematic scenes, and the collectible card system. The advantage is that we're not starting from scratch, but rather building upon existing material to enhance it with a cohesive aesthetic.

Yes, I saw the time it was posted. I'm glad you've found the right team to work with as it's not easy at all.
It's understandable about the static content. Just knowing that I could possibly just do that, instead of filling multiple roles like in the previous collaboration, like animator, asset maker, UI designer, etc. takes a lot of the weight off.
I have to ask, timewise on static game assets making, what are your expectations? I understand the foundation of the game is completed and functional, so only visually it needs the works. It's important to know your expectations, of course, when it comes to when something is delivered and when.

Can we continue this conversation via email? If you don't want to share your email address here, please send it to the one on my website. Thank you.
