Very smart game, good entry!

Developer

Thank you for playing!

I love your art style and very unique game !!

Developer

You're the first to LIKE the art! Haha! I call this style "I can't draw so hopefully if I draw memes and stuff, it'll distract people from the 9-year-old-in-mspaint vibes" So that's high praise!

Thanks for playing!

I liked the basic premise of this one; Mastermind but with more interesting hints. I feel like there's some knobs to tweak to make this one a bit easier to solve within the limit (that's a lot of symbols to eliminate!). The theme is also fun.

Developer(+1)

Agreed! More Intel, tweaking the costs, that sort of thing could all help. My initial aim during Scoping was to have a game that would be 60%-ish to lose and 40 to win, but as I kept going, I figured people would just not want to play it over again etc. But because it was the core design, I'm pretty sure that shows!

Thanks for the feedback! appreicate it!

Woo! Managed to (just barely) guess the code during my first run. I think this was the fist jam game I've tried so far that didn't use a live timer. Good idea to instead use the countdown as a kind of "currency" that you can choose to use to obtain more information about the solution.

Developer

Yeah! I figured since 100 symbols gave 9 billion different possibilities, it was probably best not to have a live timer 🤣Thanks for playing!

The start was a bit confusing, but eventually figured out what I was doing. Really wish there was a way to view previous history, in the end my strategy ended being the 1/3 info, + just remembering which symbols belonged where and brute forcing.

Developer

I had a tutorial but it was trash so I removed it 😅 Thanks so much for the feedback though! I figure the best way to play as-is is with a notepad to jot down that stuff (but that's not how it would be in a final version)

Submitted(+1)

Got it with two days to spare, though I will say it was kinda unintuitive to figure out, especially at the start. I had to frequently re-read the description before I figured out what I was doing, and everything could use a lil more visual feedback to help in figuring out what's going on, plus a bit of tutorial would be very nice. That said, god was it satisfying to figure out eventually. I really like having to decide on throwing away a day for a guess to confirm, or spending fractions of days for the smaller, still revealing boosts. It's a damn good concept and really good game, once you get the hang of it.

Developer(+1)

I had a tutorial and it was really bad. Like, I think it made it harder to understand 😅 but you're right. I think i should have gotten one of those rpg dialogue plugins people use and had it just sort of walk through what's going on but I didn't have time.

Better yet, if I just called it/described it as Wordle/Mastermind with Hints, it may have been easier to understand!

Glad you were able to beat it eventually! Thanks for the feedback!

Submitted(+1)

I like the concept a lot, of having a GIANT board of symbols to play alien wordle and have lots of powers to help you along the way. I think a bunch of UI cleanup would help it feel smoother (for example having a way of seeing your guess history) and maybe it would work to reveal whether a symbol was near a correct symbol? Idk that might break the balance

Developer(+1)

Oh that's a good idea! About having the symbol's proximity to a correct symbol be a thing. Sort of like a minesweeper variant.

That's not what this game is but thats a really cool idea lol!

As for like UI feedback to WHERE you guessed what symbol, you're absolutely right! And I should've focused on that more because my memory is trash and even when I was playtesting I had to keep notes. I just thought I had more time (but whoops! Bugs!)

Thanks for the feedback! Thanks for playing :D

Submitted(+1)

The idea was very unique! I liked it, the game was a bit difficult but the hints were nice and I liked the memes lol. Congrats on submission!

Developer(+1)

Thanks a bunch :) I wanted it to be hard but I didn't want to make it like too hard but I'm not sure I gave myself time enough to tweak the knobs to get it just right (hint costs, days to start with, hint effects, etc)

I enjoyed this game a lot more than I thought I would! On my first playthrough I didn't notice the powerups you could buy until I was more than halfway through (somehow I still won and got 630 points). My one complaint was mostly just ui stuff, like the inability to click, etc. I also think it could have been nice to deselect correct symbols so I could test more, but this also adds to the difficulty, so maybe it's good as it is! Great work with this game!

Developer(+2)

Thank you so much for the feedback! I fully agree! Also, I can't imagine what a nightmare you'd be having without the Intel actions! Bravo on the 630 points, though, that's wild! I guess I weighted the score for less-Intel-Actions highly :)

Submitted(+2)

I am very happy to have completed the game with 420 points! XD
This is an interesting decoding game that incorporates elements of skills into the classic gameplay, making players' choices more diverse.
My game strategy is to buy a large number of skills first and then slowly decode, and I also bought multiple tools with a 1-in-3 skill. Isn't that skill a bit too powerful XD

Developer(+2)

Hahaha! Great score to be fair! You have a good strategy, for sure and... yeah, I really really really think that I under-valued Theorist Theory (1-in-3) when I costed it, BUT there are some playtesters that undervalued it so maybe you're just too smart :P
Thanks so much for the feedback, and I'm glad you enjoyed it! :)

Oh my stars! What a charming code-cracking game. I cracked the code on my second playthrough so I got to see both endings. I had a good time with it, and I appreciate that it brought a little bit of fun narrative and humor to a puzzle game. Here are my playtest notes in case you decide to make a post-jam release:

-More visual feedback for symbols you get wrong. Since naturally my first several guesses had no correct symbols, I couldn’t tell whether the console was doing anything.

-Recommend adding audio feedback for correct and incorrect solutions. The instant feedback would help alleviate potential confusion, and it would add the little bit of “juice” that makes the feeling of guessing correctly feel really good.

-When I used the Intelligence Action that would highlight 3 (with one being a symbol in the sequence), the highlighted square covered up the actual symbol

-In the Intelligence Action that let me pick a column, I would have liked to be able to reference the board to choose but the popup that let me pick blocked it.

-For green and locked, the instructions say “why would you want to move a correct symbol”. But after I got a few green + locked, I had fewer slots to test and eliminate additional symbols. It could add a small strategic choice to let players not have them take up a slot.

-Consider adding the ability to click symbols to add them to the console

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for this!

Yeah I think some more visual obviousness would be good. I made wrong symbols disappear to try make it clear so that the player wouldnt think to even lok for them

I agree on sound! That was all last minute for me. I think I could have done a thing where, after the signal has transmitted, the results are revealed one by one, so its super clear

Yeah... With the Theorist Theory, i made it like that because time and when playtesting with the ACTUAL symbols and not my placeholders, the highlights were not clear. Thats also why "right symbols, wrong spot" spin. Because the yellow highlight was missable sometimes

Fair point with the green and locked. I just had trouble with playtests whrre if people werent taking notes they forgot where they put their stuff. I could have put like a number indicator on the symbol to remind them though!

And not having time to add clicking is my biggest regret 😅

Thanks so much for playing and the great feedback!

Submitted(+2)

I really like the idea of showing symbols 1 by 1 with audio and visual feedback (as long as it’s not too slow). The spinning was a great touch and a good solution to show right symbol wrong spot Perhaps on the console you could have a smaller icon to the right with the correct symbol indicated once you’ve guessed it correctly? Or have it show in the box and highlighted green but with a slightly lowered alpha and allow the player to overwrite it (as if it were the placeholder text in an input field if that makes sense). Now that I think about it, lowering the alpha might also be a good way to indicate symbols that you’ve ruled out (instead of them disappearing entirely)

Developer(+2)

Yeah that works! If i had time for mouse clicks, I could have a Right Click button allow you to mark the Symbols with a number 1-5 to sort of remember where you placed it. That could be cool!
I'm not sure I am going to take this idea forward after the jam but maybe! This is, like, my second "finished" "game" so I'm just doing little mini projects to learn more and get better

Submitted(+2)

Really unique take on the theme!

Developer(+1)

Thanks a bunch :D

Submitted(+2)

This scratched some itch in my brain I didn't know I had. I really enjoyed getting to decode the language and I liked how you used clues as a way to manage resources and also correlate to the theme. Great game ^^

Developer(+1)

Glad I was able to unlock that for you :D Thanks for playing !

Submitted(+2)

This game was really fun once I got the hang of it. It was satisfying to decode the message and decide whether to guess or use intel. The balance was a bit off since rng meant the odds of a symbol being in a row or column were relatively low. Stuff guaranteed to reveal something in the solution, like Theorist Theory, were really strong in comparison. Despite that, it was fun figuring out a strategy. For what I didn't like, a tutorial could've helped telling you how guessing worked, and I didn't like that your row/column got reset when you added a symbol. My best score was 690.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Awesome score and thanks for the feedback! I assume you were using Arrow keys? I found that, too, that having it reset to 0,0 off the grid wasn't ideal but I just didn't have time to change it. Also, you're right, balancing those intel was tough, so your feedback is super appreciated! Theorist Theory and Late Night Epiphany are the GOAT :P

Thanks for playing

Great game. Can't decide whether the crappy art style is bad or adds atmosphere. Probably the latter.
I hate the control, but I don't think you couldn't have done them any better.

Submitted(+2)

Great stuff a little overwhelming in terms of information input but I still enjoyed it! Congrats in completing a game!

Submitted(+2)

interesting idea. abit overwhelming inititally

Submitted(+2)

could use work but overall great

Submitted(+2)

difficult, I like games like this though

Developer(+1)

I hope you were able to beat it, still :) Thanks for playing

Submitted(+2)

Very nice. I liked how the tips give diferent hints. But I wish there was mouse input

Developer(+1)

Yeah, that's my bad.  It was next on my list before the deadline hit. Thanks for playing!
