fast paced, no frills, old school in the better senso of the word, funny texted, probly crazy, quite unhinged

Aliens, Wizards, & a monkey- this module’s got it all! This was a fun read, and I am happy to see a dungeon that doesn’t take itself too seriously. My favorite part was definitely the description of the purp’s unique odor, as well as the roll table of purp exposure effects. Good stuff!

This was a fun read, nice Zerg inspiration =D. I like the simple layout, you could replicate this on a typewriter, which is appropriate for Appendix N! The map was pretty confusing, I would either simplify it or spend more time on it, but it kinda got caught in the middle ground of effort.

Thanks for the kind words!

Yeah, I'm planning a rework/expansion of the adventure that will include a significantly expanded map (Foundry compatible) but this was my first stab at Appendix N and I learned a lot about the degree to which the tight page count left me with execution struggles. Next year....

I love the idea of an alien with a plan crashing unto a wizard [dead] with a plan.

The purp is a great addition and let’s players aim for caution. The first page is a really great setup. The dungeon itself is a neat thing with traps and contraptions abound (and purp!) (And a monkey!).

Maybe it’s my D&D brain talking, but what this needed was a bit more storytelling. The connection of the smaller creature to their mother needs to be shown and the setup somehow lead me to think that the wizard got all the vigor he needed but due to the alien-blood he would rise as a really badass hybrid. Perhaps in a version 2 with no page limitations? :)

Developer

Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, I'm hoping to build this out with a few more pages for more description and more story. My idea was that the wizard had almost enough magic stored up to rise and then the mother started draining it, so he spent his reserves on possessing a monkey before she drained him entirely. He's philosophical about it; you win some, you lose some. At least he'll get some banana time once the mother is dealt with....

Great work on this! The core mechanics (especially the Purp mutation and the Old One monkey/ghost) are fantastic. My only real suggestion for a future draft is to expand on the narrative flavor! The prose can feel a bit dry in places, and giving the environments and encounters a bit more vividdescription would make the module more atmospheric.

Thanks! Yeah, I definitely have room to improve on the balance between terseness and flavor. Next year I'll aim for less map and more room for text.

I love the economic writing. Efficient but also complete. Great job.

Enjoyable with a neat scifantasy premise, I liked it!

What i think worked well

  • Efficient word usage
  • Purp mutations are neat
  • Old school with lies and general lethality
  • I like the mix of classic dungeon trappings with sci-fi

What i think could improve

  • Sometimes text is too efficient, was tricky to read sometimes
  • Lack more styling, while functional, felt like a missed opportunity
  • The mother and the dungeon could do with a bit more fleshing out
Developer

Thanks for the feedback! This was my first time working to this small a format/page count and I definitely went overboard on text efficiency. In retrospect, I should have skipped or drastically shrunk the surface map and reclaimed that space for more text, which would have left me more room to address your other complaints and also to really get the wizard's ghost more fleshed out.

(I'm planning on fleshing it out more into an 8-12 page Dragonbane module with separate map files. 4-page A5 is tight, especially since I wanted to include the mutation table and the bestiary.)

I really like the use of language in this one. Really fun creature names.

Would love to leave a rating but there doesn't seem to be a file included on the project page?

Developer(+1)

Apparently I'm an idiot and didn't figure out how to upload the file at first. (I was one of those affected by the Itch Glitch so I had emailed the file to the judges but...)

Thanks!
