How does the game fit the theme?
No one can be trusted at Trust Fall Summit during the annual snowball fight. The whole idea of the game is that everyone on the mountain is a potential target, so you never really know who is going to throw the next snowball at you. The theme fit pretty naturally with the name Trust Fall Summit and the idea of not being able to trust anyone around you.

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
I used a purchased pixel art snow tileset by Snoblin for some of the environment art. Everything else was made by me during the jam, including the characters, animations, pixel art, overall design, code, and music. I used Godot for the game, Aseprite for the pixel art and animations, and DefleMask for the music. The asset pack is credited in the game.

I really appreciate how authentic that felt. This could really be an NES game, really well done. The animation was satisfying and the pixel art was professional.

The music fit very well with the theme of the game and the style, authentic chiptune track (the authenticity enhanced by the limited number of channels used). I think it could be perhaps made more modern with more sophisticated harmony but that's a style choice and would fit less with the game. I would definitely add drums though.

Also the game was super tough lol. I could survive more than a few minutes

Thank you so much! Hearing that it could be an NES game is a huge compliment, especially since that proper retro feel was something I was really going for with the whole project. I made the music myself in DefleMask using Game Boy style samples and tried to keep it simple and authentic to that era, so I’m really glad that came through. The actual game play music has drums, but Game boy samples aren't definitive enough I guess to come through all of the other noises coming through :p

And yeah, the game is definitely tough lol. I didn’t want to make it too easy, but I might have pushed it a little too far. I could probably let up on the difficulty a bit. I really appreciate you taking the time to play and give such detailed feedback!

The animations and character designs are super cute, and dodging snowballs down the mountain makes for a great high-stakes loop. Awesome work on your first jam, there's so much potential here!

Fun game! i enjoyed the snow balling, was a little difficult to hit the NPCs when they were close to trees on the sides also loved the aesthetic !

Awesome SkiFree-inspired vibes! The animations and character designs (especially the snowball-throwing raccoon) are super charming, and the arcade concept has great potential. My main feedback would be adding outlines to the snowballs so they don't blend into the snow, tweaking the tree hitboxes so they feel more precise, and adding a distance/high-score tracker. Balance-wise, turning down the default music volume and fixing UI text readability against the snow overlay would polish it right up. Awesome entry for your first jam! Thank you so much! I really appreciate the feedback. I definitely agree the snowballs could use an outline, and the UI readability is something I’d like to clean up too. The hitboxes are definitely something I’ve been working on, so it’s helpful to hear where they’re still feeling off.

A really fun game. I found the visuals extremely pleasing, and not only that, but I feel the game has the potential to incorporate other mechanics and modes to become something even bigger.

I think the snowballs could stand out more on the map. Maybe with an outline? I'm not sure, but just so they don't blend in with the snowy map itself or get camouflaged.

That’s the dream after this! I’d love to eventually turn it into something bigger, maybe even put up a Kickstarter for it. I’m imagining more of a cozy cabin game where your runs earn you stuff, you can customize your character, and there are a bunch of other mechanics based on the feedback I’ve gotten and things I didn’t have time to implement for the jam. And yeah, I think an outline would be super helpful for the snowballs too. Thanks for pointing that out!

Thank you for the feedback! It’s really helpful. I was actually trying to keep the hitboxes a little less exact because I wanted the snowboarder to be able to squeeze through tight spaces and help sell the depth of the mountain. I think I may have pushed that balance a little too far in some spots though 😅

As for the skiers overlapping objects, I think I might have some scripts conflicting each other because sometimes skiers acknowledge the obstacles and sometimes they don’t… I’ve been trying to get that behavior consistent, so that’s really helpful to know. Glad you enjoyed the game overall!

What I saw when looking into infinite scroller was that you could instead of spawning objeects design specific regions to come next. You could hardcode these regions and implement their path without having a dynamic or self aware calc. For a selfaware calculation you could use rays and detect wether something is "in front" and thereafter turn.

Yeah, this is actually really interesting. I tried using an array for the spawn regions, but when I was testing it I wasn’t really getting good results, so I ended up going with the dynamic spawning approach.

I’m curious about how you would structure the region/path system though. Would each region basically have a set of predetermined obstacles/enemies and their paths, then the game just moves through those regions as the player progresses? I’d definitely be interested in picking your brain on it!

Yeah that's what the tutorial said, but one should always go from there. When scaling I'd differentiate between moveable and non moveable objects and in which layer they would be (e.g. skier ->moveable + collision with other objects ->calculation necessary, tree -> static + collision)

You could also build the it semi static into individual regions and put them together like tetris blocks when generating the next spawn. You would have a set variety, but through variation and orientation changes you could do this well (needs playtesting).

If going full dynamic you would need to either track and recalc the routes, or set a ray of length [e.g. 1m]. You could also evaluate each collision and on collision turn the skier around. You would need to differentiate the individual collisions and maybe work with different collision layers.
At least that's my non-professional-developer view. It also depends on how your game is currently implemented. Godot also has Path-Nodes, but I haven't used them yet.

Ahh okay, I see what you mean now. The semi-static regions could actually work really well for this game. Having different sections that I could mix and match would give me more control over the difficulty while still keeping things unpredictable.

For the skiers, I think that’s where I’m running into trouble. I’m pretty sure I have some scripts fighting each other because sometimes they recognize the obstacles and sometimes they just go right through them. I was trying to have them react dynamically rather than follow predetermined paths.

I’ll have to look more into the ray approach and collision layers. I haven’t messed with Godot’s Path nodes either. Thanks again for taking the time to explain all of this!

Honestly, this means more than you probably realize. I’m pretty new to game jams and just starting to put my games out there, so I really appreciate conversations like this. I don’t have much of a community yet, so it’s really cool to have people take the time to talk through this stuff with me.

Reminds me of course of SkiFree. Definitely felt like I wiped out for no reason a couple of times, or before I think I would have hit the larger tree. But really cute sprite animations. Would be nice to have had a distance tracker to know how far I've gotten down the mountain, and lines across with my last attempt and my best attempt.

Ooooh, a distance tracker would be nice! That’s a great idea. I actually used to play SkiFree back in the day, along with Minesweeper and a ton of DOS games like Heroes of Might and Magic, so that definitely brings back some memories lol.

This is all really good feedback, thank you! The bigger collision shapes on the trees were actually intentional so the moving enemies wouldn’t overlap the objects, but they might be a little too big. I’ll probably try scaling them back a bit in an update. I also have collision set up along the edges of the mountain, so that’s really helpful to know too. Thanks again for taking the time to play!

The animations are pretty clean, and the concept is simple but has a decent bit of depth to it! I wonder if it would've been interesting to like, limit the amount of snowballs you had, so that you had to go out of your way to collect them or something. One small criticism I have is that the snow overlay made it a bit tricky to read text at the start, but that was pretty minor. Trust Fall Summit is also an awesome name for the game, even if the use of the theme was just "this game has enemies" lol. Cool work!

Thank you! I initially wanted the whole thing to feel immersed in a snowstorm, so I was pretty stoked when I got the snow working and got the patterning right that I didn’t even think about the layering 😅 But that’s good constructive feedback, thank you for the honesty! The snowball limit is actually a really interesting idea, especially having to go out and collect them. I think that could be cool, but I’d have to make sure people don’t confuse the incoming snowballs with the ones they can pick up. Maybe highlighting the pickup ones somehow could work. And I’m glad you liked the name! I had a lot of fun making this, so I really appreciate the kind words!
