Is my passion worth pursuing anymore?

i was always as a kid thinking of making games or applications when my friends went out to play and did things, i always sat around my room to build a program and learn languages and it was really fun. i never thought i will quit and wanted to be a programmer. but i found that i really like to make games .. like i was learning programming by typing random functions or keywords and seeing what they do to the results, i didn’t even found a platform to learn program properly, i downloaded some 24 hours prgramming tutorial videos like crazy, i made several games back then. i am studying bachelor rn and i didnt go a single class and passed all programming subjects with great marks with previous knowledge.

i did many things but i found that i really am into military stuff and their medival warfare to modern ones and am itching to create a game on it now, by using whatever knowledge i have left but i am afraid now that my games won’t get views or won’t be getting some playerbase now that there are ai slops and so many people in the area altogether and it makes me sad :( . i really don’t know what to do to in such a new era of games with ai and so many tools that came while i left , are there any veterans or people that can give me some tips on this or is it too late and i should call it quits?

It's never late. You can start again in the field of Game Development. The fact is, low quality AI content is heavily criticised in the field of Game Development.

If you can make the best in the military game genre, that is a unique element of your game. Like my unique element is psychological horror, you also have one.

About the views, Even my games don't get views for straight 6 months when I first started. If you want your games to be played by people's, join game jams. People's directly play your game and rate them. Try it out, that will regain your confidence.

Also your start is very similar to how I started game development. You can read the story in my profile  C-mastered studio. While I also downloaded a 48 hours C++ programming tutorial like crazy.

A little advice: Game development is an art of programming and imagination. Enjoy it!

Thank you so much :D , i like how everyone shares a similar experience , i will try your tips and your games are cool too :D

I've heard some advice like:

"Only people who can't not make games should make games."

Making games is usually a heartbreaking and tragic way to spend your time, regardless of what new technology is arriving. Once you think you are good at making games, some new techniques will emerge to invalidate much of what you were an expert at.

But games as a subject are poorly understood. Ludology is nascent as a "true science," and there is infinite room to contribute to the field professionally or from a personal research and indie development standpoint.

But if you are able to do something else, you should always do something else instead.

Hi. I have a similar story to you. I also have learned programing my myself and have a little track when making games and some small programs. Not as a professional, and I am not a veteran, so you can skip my reply. Anyway.

Let's see if i got it right. Are you afraid  that nobody want yo play your games because AI (and games created with it) exists?

If that's the case, then I will say that you are worried about nothing. Yes AI can ease software development, art making and stuff, yes there are a lot of shovel-ware made with AI. But a good games still is a good game, no matter the tool.

This is like saying nobody would play CoD of Battlefield because FPSCreator or GameGuru exists.

I think your concept is interesting and what you want to do is worth pursuing. The game after all will be 'judged' (in downloads, score, comments popularity) by it's overall quality. Little with matter if it was made with Fable,ChatGPT Codex, GODOT, Unreal and so on. If you have a good game and still doesn't have almost downloads or anything. Then the problem will likely be promotion/marketing side. Game Industry  Is oversaturated since pretty much the 70's.

I made what i do pretty much as a hobby and more 'for me' I mean, I create stuff that I consider interesting or I want to see. And think little in a player base or a public. If i have it cool. Is not like i don't care about players/public, but i try 'likeing' others not be the main reason with I do stuff.

I just wrote that because perhaps you wanna ask yourself why you wanna games to begin with. Hobbie? wanna make money/fame? other? (there's no wrong answer, just different way to go depending the goal).

But again. Your game will be a good game and have it's public/niche/player base, etc because of you. No matter the AI you use or not use.

Wish you luck. :-)

thanks for your much appereciated reply , i know what to do now

I'd suggest worth pursuing this game dev dream. If you're not sure, try making a new game and see if you're motivated enough to complete the game. If you are, then you should pursue this dream.

As for AI slops, they have nothing to do with your or our dreams. We make games because we love to.

As for hard to get attention, it's a problem for everyone which made worse by AI slops.

i am glad am not the only one :D

Don't mind slops. Try your best to give any number of people you got the best experience ever.

sure i will thanks :D

If you enjoy it, don’t give it up .

AI will never be able to replace human creativity.

What’s more, there’s a relatively large community that rejects any creation in which AI has played a part, so if you manage to create an interesting game, you’ll have a large niche audience of players.

Keep it up! 😘

imo it takes a lot of creativity and skills to use ai tools to make something good

just standing up for the ai

I agree, but these are skills that don’t have much to do with those needed to create art, music or craft a good story. I suppose the main one is being a good ‘prompter’.

On the other hand, in my opinion (and I respect both those who use AI for their creations and those who don’t…), the very fact of using it to create a product detracts from the value of the product itself.

It is for that same reason that (for me) anything handmade, which has required a great deal of effort on the part of the creator, will always be more valuable to me than a product designed on an assembly line.

That’s just my way of looking at things, nothing more. 😘

yes it can be very useful

i dont care if you use ai or not to create your product as long it is good

i really like ai assisted made games these days they have a edge in programming

prompts can be powerful ;3

Is my passion worth pursuing anymore?

If this is your passion, why do you ask the worth question. If this is your hobby and you have fun, do it. You are not asking if it's still worth repairing your broken old car.

But if you expect to get rich and famous for doing your passion, that's most likely not gonna happen. So if your passion is only worthwhile for you, because of the views, than maybe it was not your passion after all.

Or maybe I am misreading. English is not my native language and that topics sentence has strange grammar for me. Maybe you ask literally, if you should pursue a career as indie game developer, and if this would be worth the risk. I understood you to ask if you should keep doing your hobby, which perviously was fun to you, but now you have doubts.

Hey Nep toodles! You mentioned a lot things that you should clear up before you make a decision. Especially that this decision apparently will consume much time from you and time is gold!

If you're worried about AI, just don't. AI is a tool and it doesn't replace your unique touch and thoughts, you might use it to just help you if you lack the sources or skills in things other than programming. It's not bad and it's not essential, it's an option for both the player and the developer.

But if you're worried about the views, this could be different. You should ask yourself what is my goal? Do I want to share the game with others so they enjoy it? Do I want to earn money from it? Do I want it just to be popular? Because each path will guide you to some strategy that you can follow.

I'd just like to say that it's never too late to do the thing you're passionate about. Passion knows no limits. It's all about the expectations you hold against them. ✌️

i am not greedy for money, i want to create something where no monetary payment will be sent to me from players anyway , as i always have done in various projects of my life but i am worried about if i get the views or not. well i guess i will keep posting some little things or changes i make in my game as i progress lol
