I thought this game was so cute. I found it really funny when the dragon would get crushed by a boulder because the juxtaposition in the music. The gameplay was fun too, though I wish I had unlimited dragonbreaths to use I feel it was balanced enough with the cooldown and the limited range.

Developer

thank you! glad you enjoyed it.

I got killed as soon as I started the game by a knight that spawned next to me. Played a few more times, killed a few knights with rocks (they don't exactly chase after you, so I couldn't really bait them) but burned most of them... And I got crushed by a rock that generated above me. Map generation may need some tweaks. Maybe a safe 3x3 area at your spawn location?

Presentation wise, not bad. Graphics are clean (my only issue is with the knights' walking animation), and that funny little animation with the dragon digging across the screen was, well... funny. Music is also good but the sound effects don't really feel all too gameboy-ish. Overall a pretty solid entry but I kinda sucked at it. Maybe I need to play more dig-dug

Developer(+1)

all good points! thanks for the feedback! i’m curious what you don’t like about the knight’s walk animation.

Submitted

I can't explain it very well but the best way to put it would be "it skips a frame". like there should have been an idle frame inbetween two of the walking frames. Again, can't explain it very well

Developer (1 edit)

ah. yeah, they don’t go to the idle animation when they stop moving momentarily. the walk animation is always playing unless they dig. there’s a death animation too but it plays so fast you can barely see it.

This game is pure eye candy, and most game devs can learn many lessons from this entry on how to present/package/polish a game.

However, having limited fire blasts leads to softlocks relatively easily, which breaks the flow of gameplay. It's an unusual design choice to not protect against softlocks when there's a number of feasible alternate design choices that avoid this,.

Still, there's obvious positives to be had here; some tweaks in a post-jam update would result in a highly recommendable experience.

Developer

yeah, we ended up having very little time to playtest and fix the softlock issue, unfortunately. we already have a plan to fix that and should be putting out an update at some point post-jam. thanks so much for playing and the kind words!

I like the idea (and maybe even saw a few old games like this?) of the game, the theme fits well and the color palette is interesting and fitting at the same time. A few small issues do keep the game out of the 5 star realm for me, namely when stone generation creates them on second to last row (so basically they are useless) and I get more knight than my flames which makes certain levels insta restart unless you want to wait for the eternity that it takes them to move together. There is also an empty map bug where you get no knight and the game is softlocked. For the first I kinda wish we had the second button to make something to lure the knights into position just to give the player more agency around the random generation (maybe roar and they are more likely to move in that direction? idk)

Graphically the game looks lovely, I did spot some weird glitch with the character moving in 1 tall horizontal tunnels (seems to flicker between directional sprites maybe?) but it is nothing that hurts the gameplay experience.

While music and sound effects were neat, they were a bit more loud that they should be. Otherwise they were banging!

Overall a really cool idea implemented almost flawlessly. Well done!

  • i love the idea of roaring to lure the knights! we were planning to just have them chase the dragon when close enough, but maybe we’ll do that instead? i think the knight movement is pretty random and needs a little more work.
  • i’m hoping we can fix the level generation bugs as well.
  • good eye on the dragon’s walk animation! i was surprised that no one else had mentioned that yet because (as the artist) i noticed it right after the deadline passed. i think the animation frame order got mixed up or something? i’m not actually sure. Macrow was unable to work on the game until the final day, so we didn’t have time to really do any QA checks lol. this is also the reason for the other quirks you mentioned, but i think he did an amazing job in such a short amount of time!

thanks so much for playing and the in depth feedback! i’m going to check out your playthrough now. ❤️

Developer (4 edits)

in response to some things mentioned in your playthrough:

  • i’m not sure why the purples on the page look different for you. they’re the same in my browser.
    image.png
  • lol the controls also weren’t my decision. i would have asked to add WASD + JK as well if we had more time. arrow keys + ZX are pretty common controls though. :)
  • hopefully we’ll fix the bug where you get stuck on the rocks sometimes. i’ve noticed if you move in the direction away from them you can usually get free.
  • i also didn’t notice our game description was just “GBJam 14” lol. thanks for pointing that out. i gave it something a bit better!
  • the game is pretty similar to Dig Dug!

I had to replay it twice because enemies were spawning right on top of me. Nevertheless, the game is fun to play and reminds me of Dig Dug. The graphics are well made, as is the music. The only thing I would have liked more of was fire, because I ran out every time.

Developer(+1)

that’s the challenge! but yeah, sometimes you don’t get enough fire. we need to fix that. thanks for playing!

I really loved the visuals and the unique colors chosen for this entry, the game was well implemented, it really has that GameBoy spirit. I believe RNG played a huge part in level generation and that could cause some issues like enemies spawning at the back of the UI for the coins or fire (Although the game would hide the UI if you get close to them, which is a great detail and shows that you've paid attention to this matter, but the enemy is still hidden there and you have to pay attention), another problem was inconsistency with the amount of enemies and the flames you could use, sometime there's just one enemy, sometimes  6-7 of them, but you still have 4-5 flames to use for both of them. the enemies' movement are also completely random, which makes it hard to set them in a way to use the rocks on them. Apart from that, the gameplay feels really smooth, and it's a very well polished game. The music was also fit and spot on. Fantastic Job

Developer

thank you! and thanks for pointing out those issues!

I liked this game overall- so much of it worked well! The spritework was great and expressive, and the music was catchy and felt very GameBoy. I also really liked using nose smoke to indicate when the dragon was recharging its flame.

One friction point I ran into was that using rocks to kill knights was difficult, not just because of the timing, but because their pathing appears to be entirely random. In cases where I had less fire breaths than there were knights,  I was just waiting for some of the knights to overlap or for them to walk under an area where I could crush them. For most levels generated this worked okay, but in others, it resulted in enough waiting think that I felt inclined to just restart, which was a bit of a shame. If the knights had the ability to 'pursue' the dragon, even for a short time, this might make them more threatening and allow the player to guide them under rocks easier.

Also, I did run into a case where I spawned into a level without any knights and couldn't find any way to progress to the next level.

That said, these were just nitpicks, and since it is a very arcade-y experience, the only thing lost by those issues were high scores, not game progression, so they weren't super big deals. Overall, really great entry!

Developer(+1)

i appreciate the in depth feedback! those are definitely points we would have liked to fix but ran out of time for the jam. maybe post-jam we’ll smooth it out. thanks for playing!

Gameplay was smooth and definitely gives Dig dug vibes! The graphics were outstanding and clear. The soundtrack was great, my smallest pushback is a personal preference that I would've gone with something that had a bit more drive in it to push urgency into the player. This feels unique and like it belongs on a Gameboy cartridge any day of the week! The idea that you guys got this done in 10 days is inspiring, really great work!!

Developer(+1)

heh. it was more like a couple days, but thank you for the compliment and glad you enjoyed it!

Been going through and playing all the dragon-related games I can find. (Fewer than expected, but more than I thought yesterday)  Like others said, this one reminded me of Dig Dug, but with MUCH MORE UNSTABLE ROCKS.  I died almost instantly in my first game because I was planning to wait under the rock for a knight to move close, but the rock fell instantly, crushing me.

Once I got the hang of it, I finally died because a rock was hidden behind the score in the upper-left, and I didn't see it until it had already crushed me.

Still, high marks all around, and a very fun game!

Developer

yeah, those rocks are tricky! sorry they gave you so much trouble. thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Fun gameplay! On my first try I was confused as to why I couldn't use my fire anymore until I realized that it only has a max number of uses, I think it'd be nice to have an item you can reach for to restore your fire breath even if it's just by one. I love the dragon sprite and the roar, good job!

Developer(+1)

thank you! a pickup is a good idea. i was thinking beer or oil or something that is flammable would be fun for that.

Submitted(+1)

Great arcade game. Using the falling rocks to take out knights was a nice touch.

The art is fantastic, the music and SFX are great, and the whole thing feels like it could have been on an actual Game Boy. Definitely got some Dig Dug/Bomberman inspo here.

I would happily play more levels!

Developer

thank you so much! glad you enjoyed it!

This game is an absolute banger !

I would really expect to see such a game on the gameboy, reminds me of Bomberman.

Goated art, goated music !

I really liked the gameplay, at the beginning, I didn't understand how to kill 5 enemies if I had only 3 bursts of flame, but it became possible with the falling rocks mechanic, at the end it was very fun to play.

I only got your interpretation of the theme by reading the explaination, but it works.

Congrats on making this game !

Developer

goated review. we definitely could have done a better job incorporating the theme, but we were thinking dragons are old and they love their gold and the idea came from that. thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

So polished, best game I've played so far!

Developer

thank you so much!

Super fun, very satisfying sound design and the animations are very well done. Gameplay is fun too, I think you could easily expand on this with high scores and different level layouts.

Developer

thanks a bunch! we definitely had more stuff planned but didn’t have the time to get it in. we may add more to it post-jam though.

Submitted(+1)

I love that there's an alternate take on DigDug. Setting up traps for the soldiers is pretty tough, though.

Developer

yeah, they’re a bit hard to line up because their movement is so random. thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

An endearing inversion of roles from DigDug.

I am totally a sucker for games that let you play as a dragon. And this is a good one even outside that.

Developer

thank you! glad you enjoyed it.

Submitted(+1)

Sounds and art are amazing. Still I can't figure out how enemies move, but super solid and fun game. Good job!

Developer

i can’t either lol. thanks for playing!

Great game and the art is amazing, I really liked the gameplay it reminds me a lot of Dig Dug 2001, a game from my childhood. Such great memories! Good job guys!!

Developer(+1)

thank you! it is indeed very similar to Dig Dug. glad it could bring back some good memories for you!
