Very good soundtrack and excellent pixel art. I did wish that the first two levels were a little less sparse, but I could see this being a pretty cool little game with a bit more polish!
Reading below, I'm seeing that vertical movement was cut for performance issues. I am seeing after the first boss, there seems to be a bit of stage design that really expects that vertical movement, notably narrow pathways with turrets a little past it.
The early levels were very empty, I'm unsure if that was to give the player time to figure out the controls or if GBStudio didn't quite have the efficiency to do more.
The soundtrack is one of the best I've encountered this jam.
A shmup is a very GameBoy thing to make, with R-Type coming to mind as a rather prominent one that was ported to it when the console was contemporary.
A very good entry into this jam.
This is excellent. Your art is soooo good!
Thank you so much!
Great game! I love the sound, art style and gameplay! Also very nice that there's different sound tracks for different levels / boss fights. And I really like the boss fights. Only would have loved to be able to move around freely with my ship (also up and down). But really cool!
Originally you could move the ship freely but there were performance issues with that movement and I couldn't adjust the movement settings in gbstudio so I ended up taking vertical controls off, thank you for the feedback!
Hey a GBStudio game with SFX, what's your process? It would be awesome if one day GBS could bundle a solution. I've set up a .vgm pipeline for myself, though I opted to use Godot for my game this time (also a space shmup, of less ambitious scale) and cheated by using duty 1 sweeps for both kick drum and pewpew SFX.
TwoSpaces's instrument design and chiptune composition is excellent. I particularly like the boss music. The BGM reinforces the sense of scale and epic adventure, and so does the pixel art.
Gameplay ramps up the difficulty gradually. Save file inclusion is nice. I'm at the 3rd stage, trying out stuff from the shop. I assume bubble shield isn't a passive upgrade? Not sure how to use it though.
Nice game.
Up key to use the bubble shield!
So the music was handled by TwoSpaces, I did the SFX with Fx Hammered and solely used the noise channel.
Thanks for the tip! I'm not a god gamer so it should help me finish the game.
I never figured out how to use FX Hammer, but cool to see that it's viable. Noise channel SFX is a nice courtesy to let the BGM use the others. I learned some new noise techniques this year, need to explore more with the 7-bit mode.
Yup definitely viable, sure it took me a couple of hours but if you stick to only a type of sounds and I believe on the right side of FX Hammer they all are noise channel sounds you can do a ton with it!
Thank you so much for the kind words on my music (and to everyone else in the comments as well). I don't consider myself that amazing of a chip musician but I like to take opportunities that I can get to make something new. Looking at Steel's really good pixel art I decided that I wanted to do the best I currently can in terms of both quality and quantity, but after several songs i ended up burnt out, so this negatively affected a small part of the soundtrack, which was written by me later and more reluctantly. Some tracks may also be less polished than they could be because of that. Still this is likely one of my better game jam music works so far if i say so myself.
All music was written using Furnace, converted using "fur2uge" and manually edited using GB Studio's tracker editor, sometimes in relatively major ways.
Great game! Makes a lot of fun to play, really enoyed it. Keep going!
Very well done. Stunning graphics and sound. really fun to play!
The Graphics Are OUT OF THIS WORLD :D Great job! Really fun game.
Sublime graphics and music! Lots of polish here in terms of presentation.
super fun entry with nice gameplay! i love the whole style, the character designs and the palette. the music is fun too!!
Very nice looking game! Was pretty fun and hard (but not unfairly)
Good job!
Very polished! I liked the art style and the background music and sfxs
Wow this is incredibly polished! The artstyle and music were outstanding and totally fit the gameboy aesthetic. Great job!
A very great intro cinematic and a Fun shmup !! :)
Cool game! But i think it`s too slow and boring in start.
Thank you!
