Has a unique quirky setting and tone set right away and kept throughout. Music is top notch. And the animation is great too.
I'm curious if you tried to do anything with the music/sound like the gameboy does? (I'm not sure, like limited audio channels, sampling frequency?)

Developer

Thanks, I'm glad you liked the vibe! As for the audio - I guess it does so happen to be all 4-channels (like the GameBoy), but that's about as far as the similarities go... The true limitations of the GB restrict it to waveforms and white noise. You could try and emulate the arrangement (white noise for drums and waves for guitars) but by the time you were done it would sound very different to this. I'm a bassist/guitarist so for these tracks I composed and recorded them in Ableton - plugged in a real guitar, programmed some drums, and sprinkled with the odd MIDI when it felt right (like in the garden eel's song)

I really liked the game. Although, due to the limited number of buttons on the GB it was very confusing to me to play, I'd love to play with a more "Guitar hero" approach, or at least 4 keys in order. Not the fault of the game of course, just the limitations of the jam. Good thing, failing your strokes did not punish you, so I could just mash all keys around the same time in the difficult parts.

Graphics and music are 10/10, would recommend!

I'm glad you enjoyed the graphics and music so much! These are definitely my stronger areas.

As a Guitar Hero veteran I agree the buttons can be kind of jarring with arrow keys - but this seems to be the standard layout for arrow-based rhythm games like DDR (I did a bit of research!).  I hope at least those gamers will find it intuitive...  I did try to make it quite forgiving so I'm glad that helped - there's nothing worse than a rhythm game you can't keep up with 🎶

As a guitar player, this game made me want to get a bass someday lol

Developer

Careful, this sounds like you're planning to challenge the Bass King!

Honestly implementing a musical game for this game jam was a genius move. I really loved the music integration, the art was beautiful, I really enjoyed over all. Great Job

Developer

Thanks so much! I've wanted to try my hand at a rhythm game for a while and this jam felt like the time. I'm glad you had a great time with it!

There is something 'fishy' about the jokes, but I had nothing but trouble trying to play it.  the arrows were out just that little bit out of synch with the music when I tried to play.  the A thing at the end made absolutely no sense to me and I forever remained stuck at the beginning.

More information on how to play this might be a good idea, but I'll still praise you for the effort.  It is clearly there!

Hey thanks for the feedback! The html version is probably a little dependent on your device and connection so maybe the notes don't sync up so reliably. I tried to make the hit range fairly forgiving but I'm sorry it gave you such a hard time 😥

You have to mash A during the second phase (giant A button). You're not the first to flag that though so there must be some clearer telegraphing I could do...

Thanks for giving it a go anyway!

I love the "bass" pun, the start screen is already a banger. Also I really like the font you chose, can I ask which one it is ?

Small detail, but you can bind controls to physical keys so that WASD becomes ZQSD for AZERTY keyboards (It's ok I played with the arrow keys).

I didn't get you had to mash A several times once you reeled the fish. But the minigame art is banger too ! However the idea to keep the level from the first mashing into the second one is great !

At the end I think I couldn't get the last dialog (it was skipped) because I was mashing A.

Excellent game ! You should really add a thumbnail because you game is worth the detour but with no thumbnail you will get less reviews than you deserve

Thanks so much for playing! I'm honestly surprised you found it with the current state of the page - I'll be updating that as soon as I find the time. Needed a little break after pushing right up to the submission deadline... 🫣

I'm not sure how to bind to physical keys on Gamemaker, I didn't know this was a thing. I'll have to do some research for the future. It's unfortunate Z is a standard A button or I could just hard code the additional letters!

Yeah the telegraphing between the minigame phases isn't my favorite, it was a last minute simplification... I had originally built the second phase as a central box with arrow keys coming in from all sides - but in playtesting this change felt a little too complex to understand quickly. Maybe I should add a big 'MASH A!' graphic or something.

The font is one I made custom for this jam. It's actually my first time making a font so I'm glad you liked it! I guess I can upload the png if you'd want to use it.

That's a good 'catch' about the final text box - it only said 'Thanks for playing!' ... So I guess: thanks for playing!

I will update the page to be nicer soon! I'm stoked you still made this little back lakes fishing detour, you're a real one 🤝

Good luck ! And well done for the font ! For the controls, I just checked and it doesn't exist by default on Gamemaker (there are libraries for it though if you really wanted).

Developer(+1)

Thanks! And that's unfortunate - maybe the best solution is custom button mapping... that feels possibly a little extra for a jam though 🫣
