How does your game meet GBJam's theme
A monk searches for gold to build a golden Buddha statue. Since this is an ancient tale, it represents "OLD GOLD."

Good job on your first game jam!
Most areas are strong, art, sound and programming, sadly it falls a bit short on the
game-play aspect. Walking around and pressing A on stationary stuff turns kinda
boring after a while. Think It would have been a little bit more fun if the villagers
gave clues on where the gold could be hidden rather than showing were to dig.

This game is neat with the exploration. But I think for each gold you collected that the player had to go back to the temple waiting 4 years each kind of putting time jumping bit too far for collecting each gold is bit too excessive for the game's plot. I think you could have put down 4 days later after collecting each gold so that the player doesn't wait every 4 years jump to make each time jumps too much. Maybe have all the gold collected will be jumping to a single 4 years instead of collecting every gold that causes the player to wait 4 years later too much. Imaging if the player had to grow very old when collecting all the pieces while waiting 4 years each after collecting one by one. That be too much time skipping. Also, you should add some music and sound effects in the game.

This was a neat game. The graphics were very nice, and the music was good, but I would have appreciated a second tune to break it up a bit (though I know there was only so much time!). It was a little frustrating to have to go back and forth so many times, but I can see a bit of zen to it. It might be nice to expand a little so there are some changes over time as you collect the gold and so much time passes!

It was really something to get a gold piece and then see "4 years later..."

I loved it! It was a complete experience, very well done!  And nice job on finishing this in the jam time!

I really like the art style in this. The Buddha statue is a banger!

Very cute game, thank you

Nice little gem. It feels like a original GameBoy game, the graphics and sounds are on point! Very nice exploration and progression.

Interesting concept for a game! I like the sense of progression, seeing something and thinking “surely something later will let me interact with this” (especially with the ghosts) and then getting it later. The color scheme is very pleasant as well. I definitely wasn’t expecting so much time to pass between each gold bar.

I played the game on stream today (recording here) in case you are interested in watching a playthrough of your game. Great job!

It feel like the right color pallet has been picked out just right. there some small puzzles to solve that is fun and completing the Buddha statue is a great goal to achieve.

Nice, I’m putting this on my Game Boy for the morning commute.

I really like the main character’s sprite. It reads really well, and the black silhouette makes him pop. It can be hard to translate ideas at that size, especially when you have to give up detail for the outline.

It really nails the Game Boy feel. I liked wandering around the village, finding tools, and slowly opening up new areas.

The art and music are great. Looking forward to seeing what you do in the future!

Wow, it is cool to see what someone with a bit more skill can do on GB Studio! I also made my first ever game on GB Studio with a similiar type of gameplay but you really nailed the art, music, GB soul, fun, EVERYTHING! I didn't beat it because there are a lot of games to get through but I plan on going through and beating it when I have the time! Super well made game!

P.S. Give me music pointers :P

Very interesting concept and cozy game, I got stuck finding the golden nugget  but it was still fun nontheless. Really good job love  the npcs and the concept.

I played this game because my favorite bar is burp castle. This was a treat to play. I appreciated how you emphasized the slow years-long process of building the shrine. I felt like the game bringing me back to the temple and making me retrace my steps echoed this in a clever and simple way.

It took me 64 years to finish this game haha
It's got a lot of charm, I really like the art and vibe and the map was well designed, really enjoyed it!

I have been following your progress on Twitter and was really excited to try out your game.

This entry has the most Gameboy soul out of all the games in the jam I've played so far. Not just with the pixel art, but the movement, the level design, the obstacles that block you from entering areas of interest, and even the tiny details like the sign posts that give out clues about the game.

I felt like a 9-year old playing Pokemon again for the first time, and I think that's what the GBJAM is about.

I would give Gameboy Soul a 6/5 if I could!

I really enjoyed watching your process, especially how you used pen and paper to plan out your levels. I should try that some time!

Thank you for making this beautiful game, Hidebu!
