How does your game meet GBJam's theme
This fits the secondary theme of Old Gold for two reasons. One, you play as a Goldfish and to escape, you need to find a treasure chest which usually contains gold. Two, your goldfish has a bad memory so old memories of the level are left behind after 5 seconds.

Loved the game!
I really like the core of the world shuffling due to the short memory span of the fish, lol

The music was also very enjoyable. Great work!

Fun game and the graphics and sound feel very Game Boy! The memory mechanic is neat and has some interesting potential - I think it'd be cool to have the puzzles reach across multiple rooms so you really have to chart it out and plan where you're going.

The concept is super great and the implementation also works well. I enjoyed this game, the hitboxes and movement felt a tiny bit sticky at times but other than that great game!

I like the concept though I'm not sure about the execution. Some weirdness with player movement, hitbox sizes, and such. Additionally I found out that holding X (I presume its coded to 'B' or something) during a screen refresh or transition like doubles your speed? Though only in some rooms?

Anyway nice and small  but could use some work.

Great work! Unique concept with the refreshing screen. Keep going!

A fun mechanic, well implemented.  I appreciate the shadows of the enemies forecasting where they will be on the next reset.

Might be helpful to add a clock/countdown element to the screen.  I was uncertain at the start if the reset was purely time-based, or if it was based on a certain number of moves from me.

Thematically it's an interesting concept... it's a memory game about a fish with no memory.  Making the player feel like the fish is the ultimate achievement I think... which I think you accomplish in a couple of the rooms.  They are complex enough to make me forget what the other forms of the room were and how to navigate them.  Well done.

Gameplay mechanic is super cool, really unique!

So, let's break it down:

As a developer, I’d say the game is cool. The concept is truly unique—I haven't seen anything like it anywhere else.

As a player, however, I’d say the execution leaves something to be desired. The main pro and con here is that you ALWAYS have to wait 5 SECONDS before the location refreshes. I understand why it’s 5 seconds, but it made finishing the game a real struggle; clearing a single area takes at least 20 seconds in the best-case scenario. And considering how often you lose, those 20 seconds can easily turn into 5–10 minutes. There are no invincibility frames after a refresh, and they are really needed—it’s no fun dying instantly right when the location changes. There are upsides, though: refreshing the location cancels your "death" if timed correctly, which is actually a good thing (though I suspect it might be a bug—who knows?). The level design, while not <<perfect>>, is genuinely good! Some puzzles required real thought, and I enjoyed the satisfaction of figuring them out on my own (which is a great quality for a game to have).

The story is pretty solid, though the ending was a bit of a letdown. It’s somewhat funny, but it feels like you were expecting something else.

All in all, that’s about it. It’s a good game—definitely a solid 5 stars in certain areas (specifically for its uniqueness and Game Boy style). Great job!

Thanks so much for the extensive constructive feedback.

I agree that the game could've been better in a few areas (I'm still new to these game jams, after all), but I'm proud of myself for thinking outside of the box and creating something innovative while meeting with the second prompt.

And yes, I did find that exploit where forgetting cancels the player's death when timed correctly and decided to keep it in.

The game really captured the GameBoy essence!

Cool mechanic; it made me think a lot in some rooms. That room to the right to get the key was really tough; it took me a while to get the timing.

Really dramatic song as well; it set the mood of the game.

I'm impressed you did this all by yourself!

This was an insanely fun idea! While I couldn't see theme the concept alone and the fact it was really fun saved this!
Really love the way things changed and playing around with it!

Love the concept, I like the puzzle slowly building up to more complex ones! Visually it was a bit hard sometimes during next memory encounter with those spiky dudes. fish is mega cute.

Developer

In order to know when the enemies are coming I decided to use silhouettes of them before they appear in the next level variant.

Very unique and fun game!! The theme of the game is spot on and each room bought a new gameplay twist that kept it engaging, not to mention quite challenging!

I was a bit stuck initially stuck as it said to press A to pickup objects and then the 5 seconds were over before I had time to try other buttons so I ended up mashing my keyboard to find the right button but then saw it says K in the description lol

Amazing entry! :)

Developer(+1)

Sorry, the description says use Z to interact with objects (It says A in gameplay as that's supposed to be the action on a Gameboy).

But thanks so much for the feedback!

Ah whoops typed the wrong letter! That clears things up
