How does your game meet GBJam's theme
Very loosely, old gold = the resources that are being mined off the forest.

It took a while for me to find this entry, but my oh my goodness what a fabulous entry! Really hits all the correct notes for me and the amount of content in it 0_0

feels like an actual old game that someone found locked away somewhere.

Agree with others that there are some pain points with collision and some of the physics, but also adds bit to the nostalgia feel haha.

Congrats on a great entry!

Developer

Thanks a lot! If you remember any of the parts where the collisions felt weird let me know please!

Submitted(+1)

Not much to say on this one, this is just really good all around. Great visuals, great music, best gameboy soul of the jam hands down ("Wait a minute, this is just Kirby!" was a recurring thought), gameplay had a few pain points (jump arc felt a bit heavy + bumping ceilings cratering you into an enemy hitbox sucks, spike hitboxes were a bit big, some enemies oneshot you even with a power up which felt weird) but nothing that prevented me from beating it and thoroughly enjoying my time with it. I love what the limited lives + unlimited score-resetting continues system does for the feel of the game, as someone who played plenty of those games as a child it brought me right back.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

The feeling of being brought back to games you played as a child is such a big compliment, thank you!
Were there any specific parts that you can remember where hitting a ceiling pushed you into an enemy?

Submitted(+1)

It was where there's that teardrop-shaped dark grey enemy, that oneshots you regardless of whether you have a powerup or not, walks back and forth beneath a platforming section in world 1 (I think it was 1-3). I think I hit the platform from the section above while trying to hit the enemy at least once.

Developer(+1)

Got it thank you!

The art is amazing! Really impressed with the level of detail on the backgrounds and the quality of the sprites (I can definitely see some Kirby inspiration). The levels are also decently challenging when trying to get all the stars, and more content than I was expecting from a game jam game.

I played this on stream today (recording here) in case you’re interested in watching a playthrough of your game (pardon the part where I got stuck longer than I should have on the three fire hydrants level). Great job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for sharing this, loved watching you play through the game, I didn't have any time to play test it before submitting it so this was great feedback!

The level with the 3 hydrants does throw some people off from what I've seen so you're not the only one (I think changing the height of the water from the 2nd hydrant would make it more clear you can make that jump.)

The stars not displaying on some levels is a bug (0/10 unplayable! haha) but well done for getting all of them!

I really enjoyed playing through your game, amazing storytelling!

Reminds me of the old Donkey Kong game on the Game Boy. Solid game, fun gameplay, and beautiful graphics. But I don't think the second theme fits as well.

Developer(+1)

The connection to the second theme is indeed pretty loose, thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

holy cow it's a great game! Level design is good, and the ART! it's amazing for real!! thanks for making such a game, i'm sure you'll gonna win the jam

Developer

Thanks you for playing!

Absolutely impressive! The game looks stunning, the soundtrack is extraordinary, and the gameplay while clearly heavily influenced by “Donkey Kong 94” manages to break free from that mold and feel original. Collecting the little stars sometimes gave me that satisfying “Oh, so that’s how you’re supposed to do it” feeling.

Great game! Love the level design, art, and the sound track. Were you secretly Sega children? There was Kid Chameleon flavour with a boss fight that reminds of the showdowns with Dr.Robotnik. Ran into a couple minor glitches (like unfulfilled stars), but nothing too scary. Great work!

Developer(+1)

There's definitely a bit (or a lot!) of Dr. Robotnik inspiration on the boss fight, good eye!

If there's a game that I can see being played on a game boy, is this one!

Really got the "thing" that characterizes a game as a game boy game.

Pretty pixel art, good sounds, nice gameplay.

Congrats!!!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! My main goal was for it to feel as Gameboy accurate as possible, glad it felt that way!

Submitted(+1)

Game feels like straight off from a retro console, lovely job with it. That said, coyote time I feel like a modern feature we should not ignore for platformers.

Levels felt great, puzzles were cool (that said the little floting rock guy sometimes doesn it when I feel like it should, small hitbox maybe?).

Graphics is super duper neat, looks so retro that my lcd almost became a crt.

SFX and music are great, worst thing about them is the volume level. Also udpate your page, you support wasd an jkl yet it is not shown! :D

Beautiful entry, lovely work on it!

Developer (1 edit)

It does have coyote time actually but it does need some tweaking, the tricky thing is that too much and it can trivialize some of the levels. Thanks for letting me know about wasd, j/k I guess GBstudio does that automatically! The page's been updated.
Glad you enjoyed it minor issues aside, thanks for playing!

Wow, this was reallly good! Great level design, great art and music. You even have a boss battle!!! The content kept on coming!

One thing though: I did not figure out at first that I am not allowed to jump on the fire(?) guy. It only made sense after jumping on it that I shouldn’t. That’s also when I figured the lil guy looked like a lil flame. Anyways, it wasn’t obvious for me that I can’t jump on it.

Developer

I think he needs to look more like a flame, thanks for the feedback!

Submitted(+1)

Awesome game! I like the level design and the Art. SFX also fit very well, keep going!

Submitted(+1)

This game is a delight. I'm a sucker for kirby-like experiences and this one is extremely polished and neat, the devs REALLY know what they're doing.

Graphics were perfectly in tone with the experience and the whole thing looks gorgeous, with a clear art style all the way from backgrounds, to characters, to UI.

Great game design overall, simple mechanics and tight level design. Really, level design is stellar all the way till the last world, where it feels a little bit rushed but solid enough for a jam.

Sound was a highlight for me, I was really boppin for most of the game and all the little sfx work wonderfully.

SOLID STUFF

Developer

Man you made my day with this comment, thank you so much!

It is amazing i really liked it n.n

Wow, really cool! I like the graphics, the audio and the gameplay. Everything is really good! Could you also check out my game?

Developer

I don't have access to a PC a the moment if you have a web build I can check it out!

Bravo, just bravo! This is my favorite game I've rated so far this jam, it's really impressive. This might be the most period-accurate submission I've ever seen made for GBJAM, the graphics, character designs and sound are all right on the money. Loving the Donkey Kong '94 inspiration for the gameplay, and the other influences have not been lost on me, either. Decently challenging in some spots but not frustrating, lots of level variety, and the boss was a surprise inclusion. I got so immersed I was disappointed to remember this is not a full game. But I'd play it if it was! Wonderful job, you both should be very proud.

Developer

Really happy to hear this felt gameboy accurate that was my number one goal, glad you enjoyed it, thanks for playing!

Really nice! I liked the art and the music, and the level designs were cool!

The good:

Everything from music to graphics to level design and GB feel! Mayybe some things such as the selection screen feel a bit too archaic in comparison to the GB (seems you're changing scenes instead of redrawing tiles for the changes) but that's just nitpicking, because the rest is impolute! Very charming and absolutely impressive for a jam entry.

The mixed:

Was it really required to have the items as enemy drops and making you lose them at a hit? I found the backtracking a bit tedious ngl, I prefered reseting on some ocassions instead.

The bad:

The spikes are unfair! when you approach them from the sides they shouldn't kill you, lost countless times to those. Also the trash bag in 1-5 doesn't read as an instant death thing, I find it very annoying, I'd prefer it being friendly but dropping oil to mess up your movement, or anything else!

Developer

That's fair I usually make the collisions for hazards like spikes smaller but gbstudio doesn't let you make triggers smaller than 8 pixels, I think the only set you can approach from the side does have a bit more leeway though. The trash bag is actually a fire flame, he's a real meany and will burn you on contact so definitely avoid it! Thanks for your feedback!

Submitted

Yeah, I was thinking how I'd solve that in gbstudio and.. it's quite tricky yes

A fire flame!! now it makes more sense! Very solid game really, congratulations.

Submitted(+1)

Really well made! I had some troubles with the precision of some jumps and hitboxes but overall that's just a golden entry for me <3

Developer(+1)

Thank you! If you remember where you had trouble with the jumps and hitboxes let me know so I can have a look after the voting ends!

No comments needed. Just one word - Quality!

Developer

Ah thanks a lot, glad you liked it!

Submitted(+1)

wow, basically a perfect gbjam entry - except for the secondary theme I guess.

Truly felt like an old gameboy classic. The art, level design, and music were all top notch.

Developer

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
