How does your game meet GBJam's theme
Generally pirate themed. Gold is the story motivation. We ultimately made the game we wanted to make.

That's the second biggest insult fight I've ever seen!

As a fellow Monkey Island fan I completely got the concept and figured it out. I could see why it would seem kind of obtuse to those that haven't spent time getting lousy t-shirts on Melee island. The controls did not feel very responsive however, and the text flies by very fast. It was also difficult to trigger fights with the top 2 pirates in the scene. Overall though, gameplay gets good marks from me because I appreciate your Monkey Island vibes.

Graphics are wonderful, I love the cartoonish art style. I particularly love the character close up when he's reacting to being told his love has been sent to jail. His expression is so good I can hear him in my head.

No soundtrack or FX I could hear, but I get that it's hard to find time for these things.

Gameboy soul is a 3 out of 5 from me. Felt more PC gamey, but that could just be the influence of the inspiration.

Quirkiness is something this game exudes.

Secondary theme interpretation... I get that you have to become the roughest toughest scalleywag with the sharpest tongue on the seven seas to get the money to spring your love from jail but, the old gold theme is sort of a stretch.

Overall very fun and high marks from me because this is like it was designed in a lab and laser targeted at me specifically. Well done.

A fighting game where you throw insults at others is pretty a fun and unique idea! I love being mean with my fellow pirates.

Trading insults in a Monkey Island-style sword fight is hilarious. The palette and big illustrations look great too! The art has great old PC adventure vibes.

I thoroughly laugh out loud.

Played on Game Boy, but no sound?

Sadly I did not grasp the game, I know it was about insulting other pirates but I only seemed like I had one or to lines that would make me progress a step in the battle 🤷🏻‍♂️

I played all pirates, never won sadly.

Developer(+1)

You start off knowing nothing useful.

When you get insulted, you learn that insult. Then when you use that insult you may learn the comeback. Then when you get insulted again, you can use the correct comeback.

I see, thanks for the explanation. Never played any game like this so I had no idea of how the progression worked.

I'll try and give it another go 👍

i suck at this game, but it looks and plays fun! Dialogue is quirky. Also the artstyle is dope.

Doesnt seem to have any ingame sounds or music... besides that, a pretty solid entry. The insults were pretty fun, though I wish the starting insults had some use case. Geatly appreciate the mobile touch controls on browser o7

Very fun and silly game I loved it

Looks really cool on your Gameboy Color! Congrats on beating the game!

I was having issues understanding what the gameplay mechanic was, but when it clicked, I had a pleasant moment with the game. Wasn't expecting a battle of insults!
Also, I had forgotten what we were doing in the ship in the first place, so the ending felt weird, until I went back and re-read the first part.

Developer(+1)

Yeah, we would have liked to add some more story cutscenes! Would have made things a bit clearer. :)

nice and fun monkey island battle :)

Developer

Yep. 100%. Can't deny. I LOVED MI3, and especially the ship battle/upgrading and insult sword fighting phase, pure gold. Always wanted to make something like that.

This is dope. I love it.

As a fellow pirate-duel-themed-entry jammer, I've been keeping an eye on this one since I first saw the progress pics in the discord.

Besides a bug I found (where something, I think it's pressing a direction too soon, causes the wrong rebukes to show up for a given insult), some mild jank (like having to face upwards to talk to a pirate above despite not having an up sprite) and the obvious stuff (music/SFX), this met expectations!

Graphically, I love the palette choice, and the old PC game vibes, what with the big soft illustrations, boxy static sprites and a focus on wit more than anything actiony, even if it's not pure gameboy besides the limitations.

Also, "Your socks don't match" totally should've been a valid insult for the peg-legged captain!

Developer(+1)

Yes I thought I fixed that bug, but maybe you found it in a different place/time.

The sprite orientation is a bit of an issue, the sprite grew a little over time, and we didn't really adjust the feel/movement to that.

Yeah! OFD did a great job on the art. What do you mean by "not pure gameboy"? This literally runs on gameboy. It is actually a GameBoy Color game, but only using the 4 colors (even though it could use a lot more) but it lets us have the blue. :P

Thanks for playing!

Submitted

Oh wow, it actually runs on cart? That's impressive!

The "not pure gameboy" comment was moreso on how strong the retro PC vibes are as well rather than any sort of detraction from the GB feel!

Really quirky throwing insults. tho I never got able to beat the captain with wathever insult I trowed.

Is there a way to get more insult options?? Cause I defeated the other 3 pirates.

Developer (1 edit)

One more comeback to go! Gotta go back and try it from another pirate after learning it from the Captain.

After beating 3/4 pirates, You must attempt the captain and then battle another pirate to unlock the missing insult. Once done, you can use the final insult against the captain, giving you the upper hand.

I didn't see the dev reply. Don't listen to me.

Developer

Yeah. Locking the final insult until you had it's comeback was a bit of a workaround because it's the only insult the captain doesn't know the reply to, so without it you could never win. Knowing that you learn insults when you hear them, and that you can't use it on the captain right away, my logic in that choice is that one would try the other pirates. Not my ideal, but it's the best balance in the time we had left! Thanks for playing!
