What a fantastic new take on Donkey Kong. With enough variety and challenging levels, I’d buy the cartridge version straight away.
Thanks a lot, I'm thinking about maybe expanding this, a cartridge would definitely be cool!
Had a little control sluggishness at a few points which were a little frustrating, but otherwise, like this is a great little gameboy game. I am... possibly embarrassed by how long I stood around wondering what to do after having gotten the wrench but not noticing I got it the first time, lol. Great job!
I wanted to do a freeze frame and show a little animation any time you get a power up but couldn't get it to work so it ended up being just a sound effect which is not really clear enough feedback. Thanks for playing!
Out of everything i've played (~60+), this feels the most GameBoy of the lot. Really well made. Thanks for reviewing Frogball because if you hadn't, I'd have probably not gotten to play this!
Thank you for playing! That means a lot since my main goal was to try to make a game that felt genuine to the Gameboy as much as possible!
This is very good and as someone who owned the original gameboy + donkey kong I can see the influence! 5/5 really, I have no real feedback to give other than I got lost on what to do on the second stage (or maybe I'm just too dumb). Great job :D
Thank you! You can use the wrench you get from the helmet enemies to switch the fire hydrants on/off to advance!
This could have been a GameBoy game. You nailed that feel. And there are genuinely interesting puzzles and mechanics. But I did not play long, because while Mario is pleasing to jump with and use (because Shigeru Miyamoto invested an enormous amount of time making sure that jumping and moving with Mario was fun), your character's jumps feel... wrong, and difficult, in a way that's hard to describe. It feels like I'm always jumping and hitting my head on the ceiling. So you may need to spend time adjusting how your character moves.
The jump could be tweaked to be a bit lighter but I suspect it's the height of the platforms and whether they are completely solid or one way the thing that may need adjusting and not so much the character movement itself. Thanks for your feedback!
Really loved this one. The visuals feel incredibly faithful to the Game Boy style while still looking polished and modern, and the controls feel super responsive.
I also really liked the progression through the items dropped by enemies, and the music is fantastic.
Honestly, I had a great time with it. Really impressive work!
I love this a lot!
I think this is a beautiful love letter to Donkey Kong '94 and other titles for the Game Boy. It perfectly captures the essence of the console through high-quality sprite work on both the characters and backgrounds and it overall looks so charming! The music is also fun to listen to and really fits the retro feel.
Poy Poy really shines through its simple, yet satisfying gameplay, though. Gaining power-ups by jumping on enemies is a cool idea that sets the game apart from Donkey Kong. The level design is also great, with its puzzles being cleverly designed around the movement and power-ups in a way that tickles your brain.
Maybe the jump could've been less heavy but it still works with the level design, and I did encounter a few glitches that could've been fixed with more development time (this is a Game Jam entry, after all), but really nothing game breaking.
Overall, this was a brilliant entry and you guys did an amazing job making it. Keep up the good work!
What an absolutely incredible entry! Definitely among the top for Gameboy Soul and Graphics.
I love the level designs in this puzzle platformer, and had a lot of great a-ha moments. My only minor gripe is that the jumping physics feels a little too heavy. I kept jumping into enemies in the first few minutes of the game but eventually got used to it. Saw a few bugs but nothing really game-breaking and totally understandable for a game jam.
The pixel art is amazing, not just the foreground sprites, but also all the tiny details such as the ability icons in the UI, the background, the level select screen. This game strikes a perfect balance between “juice” and simplicity of a Gameboy game – I am once again reminded that those two are not mutually exclusive for a GBJAM entry.
The music and overall audio are also very fitting with the vibe of the game, gives a lot of retro feel to it.
Congratulations on the game and keep it up!
holy cow! this is such a good entry! The gameplay was smooth, simple, and every easy to understand the rules of the game. It reminds me so much of classic/old school mario! The music and art style really gives it the gameboy soul. Huge props to the pixel artist - the art is so clean and literal goals ha.
It took a while for me to find this entry, but my oh my goodness what a fabulous entry! Really hits all the correct notes for me and the amount of content in it 0_0
feels like an actual old game that someone found locked away somewhere.
Agree with others that there are some pain points with collision and some of the physics, but also adds bit to the nostalgia feel haha.
Congrats on a great entry!
Thanks a lot! If you remember any of the parts where the collisions felt weird let me know please!
Not much to say on this one, this is just really good all around. Great visuals, great music, best gameboy soul of the jam hands down ("Wait a minute, this is just Kirby!" was a recurring thought), gameplay had a few pain points (jump arc felt a bit heavy + bumping ceilings cratering you into an enemy hitbox sucks, spike hitboxes were a bit big, some enemies oneshot you even with a power up which felt weird) but nothing that prevented me from beating it and thoroughly enjoying my time with it. I love what the limited lives + unlimited score-resetting continues system does for the feel of the game, as someone who played plenty of those games as a child it brought me right back.
The feeling of being brought back to games you played as a child is such a big compliment, thank you!
Were there any specific parts that you can remember where hitting a ceiling pushed you into an enemy?
It was where there's that teardrop-shaped dark grey enemy, that oneshots you regardless of whether you have a powerup or not, walks back and forth beneath a platforming section in world 1 (I think it was 1-3). I think I hit the platform from the section above while trying to hit the enemy at least once.
Got it thank you!
The art is amazing! Really impressed with the level of detail on the backgrounds and the quality of the sprites (I can definitely see some Kirby inspiration). The levels are also decently challenging when trying to get all the stars, and more content than I was expecting from a game jam game.
I played this on stream today (recording here) in case you’re interested in watching a playthrough of your game (pardon the part where I got stuck longer than I should have on the three fire hydrants level). Great job!
Thanks so much for sharing this, loved watching you play through the game, I didn't have any time to play test it before submitting it so this was great feedback!
The level with the 3 hydrants does throw some people off from what I've seen so you're not the only one (I think changing the height of the water from the 2nd hydrant would make it more clear you can make that jump.)
The stars not displaying on some levels is a bug (0/10 unplayable! haha) but well done for getting all of them!
I really enjoyed playing through your game, amazing storytelling!
Reminds me of the old Donkey Kong game on the Game Boy. Solid game, fun gameplay, and beautiful graphics. But I don't think the second theme fits as well.
The connection to the second theme is indeed pretty loose, thanks for playing!
holy cow it's a great game! Level design is good, and the ART! it's amazing for real!! thanks for making such a game, i'm sure you'll gonna win the jam
Thanks you for playing!
