Amazing, one of my favorite entries in the jam. The design is so smart. With limited jam time, making the levels mostly black leaves more room to focus on the character sprites, music, and gameplay, but it also becomes a core part of the experience.
Navigating a platformer in pitch black by the glow of the ghost turns each stage into a puzzle as much as a platformer. The bureaucratic skeleton letting you through purgatory was very funny too.
Above all else the game is fun. You move through levels at a fast clip so your getting a constant dopamine hit, the enemy level design keep adding new obstacles
Music was great, sprites were great, and the palette happens to look really good on my blue modded Game Boy. Really happy to have this one downloaded for the go. Giving you a follow to see what you make next!
Was pleasantly surprised that it was a rougelike (even if it did kick my ass for a bit hehe)! Was fun to get into the groove of the game and the mechanics, particularly after caving and going back for the tutorial. A couple times I found the invincibility frames and proximity triggers with the mobs a bit unforgiving, but I was in purgatory I guess, and otherwise very fun :)
Made it to the end! It was very tricky and a tiny bit frustrating at times since the invincibility frames last so little lol, some enemies took 2-3 hearts because it took a while for me to understand how the rope-climbing works. I found it's best (more fun?) to learn the maps rather than explore with the darkness mechanic, but that makes dying feel a bit like part of the 'exploration' experience, which i understand if most won't resonate with that nowadays. Personally, i had fun with it. Good stuff!
Fun and quick game with some interesting ideas. I didn't really like the darkness mechanic, but that might just be me. I feel like if my character is glowing, the light shouldn't be directional, or at least, the light should be a little more forgiving. I'd try bumping up the player's acceleration and invulnerability frames a little, too. It took me 3 tries to beat the game and each time I lost was due to a combination of not having vision, having poor movement because of that, and then taking multiple hits from the same enemy. With a bit more work, this could be pretty good!
The choice of colors are pretty nice here, and the soundtracks are really great as well. The gameplay, while I do find it cool, I kinda find it a bit tricky? But then again it is challenging so I understand that.
Not much of a feedback but during my playthrough for some odd reason (with the many amount of times I died in game) the game kinda bugged with infinite lives (like I can't die.) So I thought I'll point that out here.
Pretty cool and unique game!!
Absolute banger of a game! Gameplay was grand, only issue for me was that the sound was a bit harsh for headphones.
As said the gameplay didn't quite clicked with me. Took me a bit to actually understand what was going on at first, I almost felt I was playing a top down game.
Cool execution and ambiance nonetheless, nice music too
Very polished game, not sure if it was my cup of tea for gameplay though ^^"
I found it quite hard to navigate the dark but the quirkiness of it was cool.
I wished that there was some sort of progression system, a checkpoint that
would allow you to skip some of the levels already played.
I did manage to beat a couple and I wanted to keep playing but not from the
start again.
Anyway, great job :D
Pretty fun game, kinda neat lore! Feels pretty gameboy-y.
Had to finish it even though it took me some tries to get through all the levels.
Fun playthrough and good concept!
I could totally see this on a gameboy!! And I really loved the intro scene, it felt very reminiscent of the corpse bride and beetlejuice! I think with more time, you could make the art lean into that vibe and really stand out from other games. I think the gameplay was intresting in idea, there is real potential here BUT there needs more polishing done on it to make it fun and snappy feeling. Congrats on a great entry, and I hope you continue working on this project in the future!
