The Biggest Challenge
Making many separately generated AI images look like ONE world. Cliff and chasm graphics generated on their own never matched the road, so the breakthrough was to build every chasm edge from the road texture itself (clipped profile, stepped breaks, shading) - layers match by construction. Looping backgrounds got a min-cut seam instead of a crossfade (no "ghost" houses), and strips were extended by letting the AI outpaint a gap between their end and start. The second theme (RUTABAGA) arrived mid-jam and we pivoted fast: Granny Rutabaga - the original jack-o'-lantern - became the villain with her own spells and a boss fight. A bot playing the levels in headless Chrome, plus a "doing nothing must lose" test, kept the difficulty honest.

AI Tools Used
Claude Code (all code, test bot, asset pipeline scripts); Nano Banana 2 in Google AI Studio (all graphics); AI-written texts in English, Japanese and Polish. Music is not AI: two OpenGameArt tracks, credited on the page.

Areas Where AI Was Used
Code (the whole HTML5 game, no engine), graphics (characters, carriage, obstacles, backgrounds, logo, ending), text (story and UI in EN/JA/PL), sound effects (partly synthesized by AI-written code, partly Kenney CC0).

The fact that the coachman steering the carriage on the title screen is a mouse already earned this game high marks in my book. 🐭

And when I actually started playing... lo and behold, the ones I'm supposed to pick up are cute mice!!!

I thought it might be a bit much to give it a high rating based on that alone, but once I started playing, it was honestly fun!! Insanely fun!!

It's a game with simple controls, yet one that really draws you in.

It's a shame there isn't a downloadable version of this. I'd love to have a permanent copy on my RAID NAS!!!

I had a truly wonderful time playing this✨😍

It’s a great game—simple, one-button controls make it easy to pick up, yet it’s solidly crafted and offers a truly satisfying gameplay experience!

I love the wealth of replayable content, such as the star-rating system and endless mode.

It was a little hard to spot obstacles at first, though; highlighting their outlines might make it even easier to play.

I really enjoyed it!

I was already impressed before I read "the whole HTML5 game, no engine", pulling that much into one coherent game without an engine is amazing.  Great game!

Great asset cohesion! The gameplay was fun and the Rutabaga implementation was great.

I really enjoyed it! The pumpkin carriage looks great. I also loved how the story progresses as you play. Even though it’s a simple jump game, the beginner-friendly design is awesome—like putting you back when you fall into a hole, or having the fairy come rescue you.

I thought it was amazing how well the images conveyed the overall worldview. Usually, art styles can easily feel mismatched, so that really stood out to me.

This one feels like a complete little game, not a jam prototype — really impressive! The movement is super super smooth, the jumps have this lovely floaty weight to them that just feels right.

Two small things from my playthrough: level 2 got a bit tough for me, and I often couldn’t tell what exactly I tripped over — maybe the obstacles there could stand out a bit more from the background?  And the music didn’t quite land for me — it’s a bit aggressive for such a cozy fairytale world, I kept expecting something more twinkly and midnight-ball-ish 🎃 But that’s purely personal taste. Lovely work, good luck in the jam!

Thanks for review. I tried to make obstacles a little bit more visible but I guess it wasn't enough. Other music might be good idea as well

很可爱的画风和游戏,很难想象短时间会有这么高的游戏完成度

Here is my honest, personal review of Pumpkin by Midnight, written from the heart as someone who usually prefers rich, text-heavy narrative worlds over arcade dashes, but is taking a fair look at this entry through the lens of our jam scorecard.

My Personal Review: Pumpkin by Midnight

Coming from my usual corner of the internet—where I tend to get lost in text-heavy, meandering stories and quiet worlds on my Neocities page—sitting down for an arcade-style, one-button action game always feels a bit like stepping out of a cozy library and straight into a windy autumn street. But hey, it's jam season, and Pumpkin by Midnight immediately caught my eye with its folklore twist: Cinderella's carriage turning back into a plain pumpkin, crossed with the wonderfully petty vengeance of Granny Rutabaga, who is mad that pumpkins stole her ancient jack-o'-lantern spotlight.

1. Overall Enjoyment & Value (Fun, Polish, & Usability) —  Strong & Engaging

For a quick-fire game jam game, this thing controls surprisingly smoothly. It’s a clean one-button setup (hold to leap, tap in the air to double-jump), and the gimmick of your carriage flickering back into a helpless, bouncing pumpkin every quarter-hour actually adds a frantic little layer of strategy to your timing. It’s polished for a 72-hour sprint—I didn’t run into any jarring soft-locks or broken UI elements, and the cute autumn aesthetic kepr me hooked for a few retry loops. It’s not a sprawling narrative epic, but as a tight, playable arcade diversion, it does its job well.

2. AI Direction & Mastery (Artistic & Technical Intent)

The author was totally transparent: Claude Code handled the programming, Nano Banana 2 (via Google AI Studio) pushed out the art, and AI chipped in for text and sound snippets. What makes this work better  is the cohesion. Everything leans hard into a charming, storybook-illustration Halloween style. Granny Rutabaga swooping in on her broom throwing root vegetables feels visually unified with the background world.

3. Production Velocity & Scope (Ambition vs. Output)

Within the tight constraints of a short-term jam, the scope here is sensible. It doesn’t try to pretend it’s an open-world RPG; it knows it’s a lane-based/one-button dash runner and executes that cleanly.

4. Innovation & Experimentation (Boldness & Novelty)

Mechanically speaking, we aren't reinventing the wheel here—it's fundamentally a clever, themed one-button jumper. Where it earns its charm points is the narrative flavor text and the theme integration. Blending the classic Cinderella midnight countdown with historical rutabaga-carving lore shows a fun, imaginative brain at work.
