I enjoyed the story and the message, sadly I didn’t believed in your characters, especially the protagonist.. I did at first, but at one point(after meeting the kids near the grocery store), he made a 180 on how he acted, talked and in what he seemed to believe. To have that level of emotional intelligence from that little old man, and that openness and willingness to advise everyone…. I mean, it made sense when he awkwardly tried to explain to the kids how it wasn’t all that simple, but from there, each talk sounded more like people explaining emotions/life situation to each other (regarldess of who was talking) instead of living it, reacting to it. They were all apologizing to each other, all being understanding of each other, all willing to talk about their lives, regrets and worries in length, all ready to change their worldview after one quick talk… in short, they all seemed to be the same person under their language quirks..

I would’ve loved to stay all way through with that awkward closed off grumpy grandpa, like, still going around town, but listening with the same bad attitute, while still taking notes and learning, for at the end saying to the little girl ā€œI may start to understand… don’t stay alone kidā€, that would’ve feel so much more real to me..

I’ve read other reviews and I’m happy that what I saw as a flaw didn’t prevent people to be moved by the story you wanted to tell. That’s wonderful that your writing was able to touch your readers heart! Before you lost me, I cried a bit too. You crafted the perfect mood with the art direction (visual and sound wise), and to make us move so slowly really helped to make us feel old, and to feel the same way than the protagonist toward the Idea to do errands accross town, that’s really good narration through game design!

Overall, big gg to the team for what you managed to create in such a short amount of time!

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback! Honestly, there was supposed to be more between the kids and the next fella Mr. Morrison talked to in order to slow things down a bit for him. I worried about things happening too quick there, but most of it came down to the time constraint in the end! Had to scratch some characters and some lessons, for sure. This was my first game jam and I definitely overscoped a little bit in terms of what all I could fit in! Also, since I am not the programmer, I didn't realize how long it would take to implement certain things like animations between dialogue etc. A great learning experience. In terms of the other characters, fair enough haha. I'm new to writing, and probably put myself into the characters sometimes when I should have tried to step outside of myself, if that makes sense! I'm glad you enjoyed the art and sound! And I really do appreciate the honest feedback a lot. There's a lot of nuances in story-telling for sure, and hearing from lots of different people really helps me pin down what works and what doesn't  :)

Man! This is such a beautiful game, the narrative is amazing! I'm so glad I managed to play this before the voting ends (sorry for the late vote, had so many things over the weekend... finally had the time and i'm SO GLAD I played this, as this is probably the last vote i'll do!)

The artstyle fits it so perfectly and the characters were so interesting! It really got me emotional after they shared their stories and I love the cat so friggen much haha. My single critique is that Mr Morrison walks really really slow so it's quite a journey to back track.

Keep making great things guys! Love your work.

Thank you so much for the kind words! We're glad we got to be your last vote, and that you enjoyed the story and characters!! Thank you so much for playing :)

This was beautiful! If there was a Story rating you would get 5 on that as well! Thank you for the experience!

Developer

Thank you, that’s so kind! Glad you enjoyed :)

It's so beautiful. The town. The characters. The buildings. Man.. The art itself has the ability to stir my emotions. Then the people started sharing their stories.

I read from one of your comments that you and your fiance made this game. Please let her know how gorgeous her art is and thought-provoking her writing is. I hope you guys make more games together  Ł©(ĖŠį—œĖ‹*)و ā™”

This was an emotional game and it gave me nostalgia. Like the games I used to play in old Kongregate and Newgrounds. Amazing game, indeed!

Hi! This is the artist (I am actually the one who played your game as well on this account!) Thank you so much for your kind words! It really means so much to hear. This is my first game jam I've ever joined, and I've seen so much support and positivity here <3. I definitely intend to continue making games, since this experience has been so great thanks to you and the rest of the community. Thank you again for your comment!

Yes! Please do continue!

I remember my first game jam and how much it helped me boost my confidence and desire to create stuff

Ł©(ĖŠį—œĖ‹*)و ā™”

I am sure this first will be one of the many adventures in your journey as an artist and creator! Go, you! (and also your supportive fiancƩ!)

Cool story, good art, and overall great experience. Good job!

Thanks for playing!

Wow I love the art in this game, especially the buildings and environment design! The writing is excellent and tells a really touching story with interesting characters. You also did a great job incorporating all the themes/limitations (even the bonus ones)! The one note I have about the gameplay is that the walk speed feels really slow. This makes sense with the main character being an old man and the story being a bit slower paced, but it also makes the long back-tracking walks to deliver something a bit tedious (though I did take the time to appreciate the art). Amazing work on this game!

Developer(+1)

Thank you  for your comment and feedback! We went back and forth about the Mr. Morrison's walking pace. In the end, we decided we wanted the tone of the story to be reflected in the gameplay, and for Mr. Morrison's frustrations to be felt. Definitely understand your point though. Next game jam, we'll make a sprightly young whipper snapper to spice things up haha! Thanks again for your thoughtful comment! :)

wow wow wow wow WOW, man. i don’t even know where to start. when the cat began following mr. morrison at the start of the game, i knew this was going to be good. everyone’s written with so much depth and care. everyone has their own problems and things they’re struggling with, but they emit an overwhelming warmth as a community. :’) this game really made a cry a little haha i had to pause in the middle to go pet my cats. a really beautifully written and executed game! the cat with the collar in the end credits made me fall to my knees. i really adore this!

Thank you so much for the wonderful comment. Quite honestly, this story made me (the programmer) quite emotional too the first few times I read it - especially once I got it all in the game with my partner's art. I couldn't believe how good it was. I've been wishing she would make games with me for so long... so when she started coming up with story, I was all for it. She basically wrote the whole thing herself with a little input here and there and I just helped it come to life with the programming.
Our cats got many many pets through the making of this as well! :) Glad you enjoyed it!

Such a beautiful and moving story!! Ngl you had me crying for like half of it - my grandpa actually just passed away at the very end of this game jam and this just felt like exactly the story I needed to see <3 fantastic job to you both - the music, art, and story were amazing and even though the walking speed felt a little tedious at times, it actually added to the story a lot I felt - it made you slow down and feel from the character's perspective. Great job!!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the lovely comment. We're really sorry to hear about your grandpa... it makes us happy to know our little game helped in some small way. Loss is probably the hardest part of life and we both have experienced it in our own lives as well. Our game definitely is a bit niche in the pacing and length of the story. But, like you said, we wanted it to feel like it was told from the old man's perspective. Thank you for for playing.

Beautiful artwork with great ambient music and SFX to match the vibes of this game. Would be nice to show the current objective on the HUD though. Also wished the grandpa walks a bit faster. Otherwise it's a nice narrative game.

Developer

Thank you for your comment! We were back and forth on the current objective thing since we felt the game didn't really have much inherent difficulty (being such a simple quest system). But I can definitely see your point.  Also fair enough on the walking speed lol! Thanks again for your thoughts!

Submitted(+1)

Beautiful atmosphere between the music and art work. Really enjoyed the depth of the story and feel like that made up for the simplicity of the game itself! Could feel the painfully slow walk of mr. morrison and it was fun having the stray cat as a companion. Not much for criticism to give as it felt polished and the story was well thought out and touching, great job!

Developer

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed our old man simulator haha!

Gorgeous art, a heartfelt and touching story... what more could I ask for? This was an amazing experience, and I was very touched by the story. Especially with how it incorporated the limitation so well! Fantastic work. I would love to see more games with this art! Great job!

Developer

Thank you so much for your comment! That's really nice to hear! Fleshing out the world with this art was a lot of work lol but it was really rewarding! :)

Such a heartfelt story, with gorgeous art to go along with it! The audio really added to the atmosphere too. I was genuinely moved by the story, and I think a lot of us can relate to how Mr. Morrison and some of the other characters felt about change. I also really like how you incorporated all the limitations in a way that makes sense to the story. Beautiful work, and a great jam entry!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for the kind comment. This was the first game jam my fiancĆ© has ever taken part in (she did the art and most of the story). I did the programming and basically just put her art and writing into a visual novel format. It makes me so happy to see her work getting the attention it deserves! :) So glad you were moved by the story and appreciated the way we worked the limitations into the game.

Submitted(+1)

That's awesome; my wife did all the art for our entry as well! Your fiancĆ© should be very proud; it came out very well.

Submitted(+2)

Really nice game. Love the story. Nothing else to really say. Great game :)

The artist should be given a prize for this beautiful art <3 The style and story is so good, and its nice to see someone that uses the other side of the autumn season, the rain and greyness. The story was really touching, and I wish I could give all the characters a hug!
This game was amazing, sad but happy at the same time, and I enjoyed it very much! Very well done <333

Developer(+2)

Thank you, that means so much! I've actually never done art for a game jam before (or even joined a game jam, for that matter), so it was a bit out of my comfort zone! My fiance has been bugging me to join with him for years, though, and since I had a little break, I decided to give it a try.  The game jam community is so supportive and so kind, and I'm so glad we were able to put this together! Thank you for your kind words and for playing our little game through  <3  :)

That is actually almost exactly what happened with me for the last game jam I joined with my partner! For years my partner wished for me to join him on a game jam and make art for a game. Last Easter we made our first game, this one is our second and I have pushed myself to make some of the 3D-models, as well as paint and design them!
I am very happy to hear you have had a good experience so far with game jams, and hope to possibly see some more beautiful games from you and your fiance! <3 :D

Amazing game, the art stile is perfectly done and most importantly i love how much passion you were able to pour into such a small game's story. The characters felt really meaningful and their story was really hearthfelt.

Took me a while to understand where the limitaiton was at the beginning since i was looking for it in the gameplay, but making the limitation the central theme that the game is trying to convey, that was AMAZING *chef's kiss*

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thank you for such a nice comment! It was really fun creating this story and these characters. Fun fact,  Mr. Morrison was slightly based on George from Stardew Valley! We figured since Fall was the season of change, what might a story look like for someone who resists change? Can the people around him change his mind?

I'm glad the limitation was clear! We weren't sure if maybe it was too subtle.

Thank you again for your kind words!

Beautiful art, glad we've adopted the cat in the end! XD Awwww. Nice take btw on the "it follows you". The game kinda reminded me of Tale of Tales's Graveyard. The walks do get a bit too long, but it's pretty chill and relaxing. Congrats!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! And yeah, he's a slow fella haha! Thought about making him a bit faster but it looked weird lol! Thanks for the feedback! :)

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

I thought of that too, that it would look weird XD Maybe I'd make the town smaller in that case? (It's absolutely beautiful on the first walk through it though!)

Submitted(+2)

A beautiful story with beautiful art, super immersive, almost had me tearing up!

very well done!

Thank you so much! We're glad you enjoyed the story! :)
