The concept is really cool but I had a lot of difficulty actually getting into the swing of it (pun intended). Never did pass the second level because the enemies were just too unforgiving. From what I could tell, intended behavior was that a solid hit with the flail would do more damage than a glancing blow, but it seemed like sometimes I hit an enemy with a real square blow but they didn't actually take damage from it, and other times I just kinda dragged the flail past them and it took off half their hit points.
With a bit of refinement this could be a super fun game though
Pretty cool! This was a fun take on the theme, but it's hard to say I enjoyed it. Like others, I had a lot of trouble keeping momentum while moving - and with no checkpoints or way to heal in levels I quickly decided to start rushing to the goal instead of engaging with enemies. If you were to take this further or do this sort of game again, I'd focus more on making the fighting more fun and the enemies easier to read. The first slimes had no indication of when they would jump, all slimes could attack through solid objects, and a later ice slime would spawn its rotating attacks directly on my face. Making sure each enemy had a clear 'wind up' on its attack with a big visual indicator would've helped with that immensely. Thankfully, the Prince accepted my rotting corpse as his bodyguard, haha.
Metagame cog 102/126
Really fun idea!
I like the low-res retro graphics and the mouth sounds as SFX.
The flail was a bit hard to spin up and move and the same time.
Fun game! I enjoyed slinging the fling around and hitting things with it was satisfying! I did have trouble actually aiming and keeping momentum with my fling, it felt like my player would sometimes stop spinning with my mouse and I couldn't really determine why.
I just want to say I almost beat this game and got the gear piece but I couldn't beat the final level. YES I had the best flail, the obsidian one. I enjoyed this very much, I love gear progression and collecting resources. I do wish the enemies could not shoot thru walls though. I tried to use pillars for cover. And my flail kept getting stuck on walls and pillars in the final level.
Love the interpretation of the theme! Not sure if spinning to get more momentum before hitting things make it have more damage but it's fun to do haha.
reminds me of the game hammerfight . good work :p
I really liked the old school visuals and I found the intro cutscene to be charming! I also liked the self made sound effects those are always a plus in my book. I found the flail controls to be a bit finicky, it felt hard to keep the momentum of the spin going while moving, but it's something that you can definitely get used to after a bit of practice. I saw another commenter comparing it to Getting Over It and I think with a little more touchups (maybe by adding more of a sense of weight to the windup?) it could be more in that area of being a bit hard to maneuver at first but easy and fun after you spend time with it. But overall I had a fun time and liked the outcome! Having the prince kidnapped is very serious business.
Really to play, but can be hard to walk and spin at the same time sometimes.
Game felt really good!
I love the spin on the theme. Flailing the mouse to spin the mace was really fun and engaging in both combat and gathering materials. Very creative and enjoyable!!!
Love the sound effects! At first, I got quite frustrated at the flail being quite inconsistent, but after I got used to it, the rest of the game progressed quite smoothly. I think there are cases that, when the flail is moving fast enough, it goes over the enemy's hitbox and misses them? It makes you feel cheated when you're hurling a flail at Mach 2 directly over the enemy and you don't hit them.
Other than the flail's quirkiness, the gameplay is nice, and the art and audio is great.
I loved what sounded like your own voice for the sound effects on the hits. Unique visuals and nice interactiveness with the flail for combat and resource gathering. It may be due to my low DPI on my mouse, but I ended up having to flick the flail more often than spinning around smoothly.
The theme is great, and I like the enemies a lot, but the flail was very finnicky at times. I may just be bad at it tho lol.
Very fun! I thought I was going to have more difficulties with the controls, but the flail handled pretty well.
Very fun! The flail is tough to control but in kind of like a Getting Over It way so if that's your intention you are on the right track. It was satisfying get better at. Ended up running past all the enemies in the last level since the flail was maxed out and it was a lot to kill without dying haha
Very nice game, i liked the overall concept, visuals and audio. But the Flail was so hard to control, that it really annoyed me after some time.
Nice concept! Sound effects were fun.
The spinning mechanic was a quite hard to control, especially whilst being attacked!
Very fun concept! I had some issues controlling the flail, especially while moving, but that's probably also a skill issue on my part. I really like the sound effects used here! Visually also very fun, very old school ish. Would be interesting to see a fully worked out, non-jam version of this.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked the audio and visuals! I might flesh things out after the game jam and update it, get the flail more predictable.
So happy to be employed in this economy! Great game, that final run was pretty brutal but after I stopped rushing it and took my time I got through :). Great job!
