Dear Waldorf,

I managed to arrive until Level 4 for now, but I can say it’s highly polished and well done.

I will leave a surprise on your DM.

Have a good day!

Thanks! I hope it's not a bomb! C:

The game is very polished. I like the pixel art and animations. The sound, story and graphics all fit together. A very good submission!

This one is great. I played this for much longer than I originally thought I would, haha. I really like the mechanics in the game and the whole idea about chaining the bombs. I'm not familiar with TOO many other games out there, so not sure if it's inspired from something, but the mechanics were new to me and a lot of fun. Trial and error sure made me feel like a fool, haha.

My only suggestion (unless I missed it) was a way to force the 10 second bomb to go off. Sometimes I'd initiate the mission and realize instantly I screwed up, and would just have to wait for the timer to be done.

Keep it up!

Fun game with fun characters! Puzzle design is really good here, as the countdown works as a limit to how complex your solutions can be. My one complaint is that having the explosion, into the death animation, into the fade out, then pressing play again all feels really slow. If I accidentally press start or just mess up when I know my solution is working,  it can be a bit annoying to sit through all the animations just to try again.

Overall fun game!

Very cool! I like the layers of complexity around building the level and then having to avoid the very thing you built.  I will say, the countdown music gives me minor heartattacks, but that probably just means its working lol

Developer

Thanks! Yeah, maybe I went a little overboard by choosing the countdown music, but I really wanted to give the right vibe! XD

Wow, very very polished! Maybe make the levels easier and that's it!

Developer

Thanks a lot! The levels have two ways to beat it, without the coin is easier. Though i see that the final level may be too tough.

Submitted(+1)

Very hard game, I think I wouldn't be able to sleep until I get to see the ending, but I think I need to accept my defeat, I literally spent a bit more than an hour on this. The puzzles were cleverly designed, I like the way that there are more than one way to solve the puzzle, and the collectable items were nice additional challenges.

Developer

Thanks a lot! Admittedly the final puzzle is a big difficuly spike, especially if you didn't aim for all the coins. I was considering replacing it and keeping it as an extra level.

Great job on your submission!

It was really interesting to play your game because it reminded me of my own jam entry in a few ways. My game also uses Bomberman-style explosions, but combined with Sokoban mechanics. Seeing how polished your game is made me realize how much I still have to improve. I was especially impressed by the animations, the sound design, and the overall presentation. The art style looks great, and I think your interpretation of the jam theme works really well.

I've been a Bomberman fan since the '90s. So it's no surprise that I enjoyed the style of your game, since I chose a similar style for my own jam game. Great work!

Developer

Oh, that's cool, thanks! Though I never thought of a sokoban in a bomberman game, that's clever. Ahaha.

The theme of countdown can be linked to bombs, so I suppose it's not too unlikely we both worked on a bomberman like game. XD

Thank you very much!

This game is really well made! The amount of polishing here is astonishing, even in the UI. The core mechanic is interesting, but the puzzles are quite hard. At some point I just stuck and had no idea how to pass the level and just gave up after truing for 30 min. However, it was interesting and fun, thank you!

The music during the bomb-placement faze reminds me of Streets of Rage original OST

Developer

Thanks a lot! Yeah, the difficulty was balanced by the coins being optional, but the last level is pretty difficult with no optional coins, so I imagine that's where you got stuck.

10/10 game! This is the best combination of game mechanics and art I have ever seen in this gamejam.

Developer

That's great to hear! Thanks for playing it! C:

a simple but tricky puzzle-solving experience.

As always, you prove yourself to be a great puzzle game designer! I haven't finished it yet due to lack of time, but I think I'm getting close to the end. The main mechanic is very fun, and the puzzles have a nice difficulty curve.

I'm not a huge fan of the narrative setting (it felt a bit random to me) but I really like the characters. I probably would've avoided pixel movement, though, since the core mechanics are tile-based. The graphics in a few spots (windows, icons, and fonts) could also use some polish, but for a game jam, it's more than fine as is. Great job as always!

Developer(+1)

Ehy, thanks a lot! Unfortunately from the limited amount of resources I first choose a graphically functional setting, and only later work on the story. XD

Also you're not the only one pointing out the pixel movement. I had it by default to trick people into thinking it's not Rpg maker. Though I didn't consider the puzzle aspect of the game when I inserted it.

Amazing gameplay loop and amazing visuals, Waldorf! I simply love how it looks and how it plays! The levels near the end are veeeeery hard (if I'm near the end at all) but I like how it's designed, overall. I also love the humor and the protagonist, although my favourite visually is Morgana. I'll probably give it another go soon and finish it. Keep up the good work!

Developer

Thanks a lot! Yeah, I probably went a little overboard with the difficulty, though at least being designed around getting the coins, by ignoring them it gets much easier. Though I feel like most gamers feel challenged into getting them. XD

YES FINALLY I have finished the game. ~2-3h to get to the end but it was worth it. Of course I loved it, or else I wouldn't have put the time. But after 1h30, I won't lie, i kinda wanted to be done with it. The gameplay's good but the last levels are haaaaaaard. And I won't talk about the square fraud that was never useful anywhere. It's crazy you made all of that in 4 days. The story, the art, it's all very good. I loved the main character. She is adorable. The other one too has a nice uh, eheh, character design (but we never figured out why she's in the dungeon?).

To improve the game, I'd add a reset button so that you don't have to wait for the bomb to explode when you know that you messed up. I'd also change the sprite of the fire's warning area. If 2 fires are activated at 1 sec of difference, both warnings are the same orange color and you don't know which will damage first. Maybe do a gradient that become more red as the fire is ready to explode. I'd also like some sort of drawing mechanic where you can put symbols on the tiles when you're planning where your bombs will go. The later levels have so many things to take into account, having some way to anote the map would make it easier to plan.

I've drawn Bombermaid into the my game's artstyle. She'd make a very good customer for the Bomberful store! Don't hesitate to play it if you have the time!

Developer

Thanks a lot! I'm glad you liked the game. I think the maid is adorable as well, my aim was to make an explosion waifu. XD

I did not have space to explain, but Morgana is in the dungeon to protect the knowledge that is inside, but that would require a lot of nackstory building. But it's still implied she's a random citizen that heard of the discovery of the cave and came to check.

Thanks for your suggestion, I'll definitely try to implement them.

Thanks a lot for the art, that's adorable!

Oh well, check out my game if you want another kind of bomb waifu. XD I love watching streamers react to the third character.

Submitted(+1)

Really impressive entry! The tutorial explains the mechanic very good!

The game becomes pretty thrilling once everything starts exploding. I made it to the exit by mere milliseconds several times, which felt incredibly satisfying!

Also, cutscenes and an actual story in a jam game, especially when they are not even the main focus? Serious dedication! The music is great too and fits the whole experience really well.

My only small thought was whether a preview of each bombs blast area during the planning phase might be helpful. On the other hand, that might take away some of the tension and experimentation, so I am not even sure :D

Very polished and fun game!

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot! I had to find time time to make a tutorial introduction, since it's not super straightforward, ahaha.

The timer is 1 extra second long when you reach zero, so the feeling of doing it barely is also due to this trick. I'm glad it works! XD

Also, I love giving stories to my characters. Sometimes I make them cameo on main games.

I was planning to add the explosion preview during placing, since that part is supposed to be full puzzle. But also to see the range of the flames before the countdown begins.

Submitted(+1)

This was one of my favorite entries! The cutscenes were full of charm, and the chain-reaction bomb mechanic was incredibly satisfying. I had a great time from start to finish. I hope this game blows up after the jam, in the best possible way! :D

Developer

Thanks a lot! I really am glad as well how it turned out. Let's hope I don't blow this chance up. XD

5 Stars across the board, everything is top notch. Really creative concept, the story's funny,  and obviously the artwork is absolutely fantastic. Like most puzzle games it makes my brain hurt, but it's a really cool idea to make puzzles using Bomberman mechanics, and the time limit is actually a really good addition as well so it's not just as simple as opening a path to the exit, but opening one fast enough to leave in time. Really good entry!

Developer

Thanks a lot, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, I'm a fan of puzzle games with peculiar mechanics, when I had the idea for this one I knew I had to do it! C:

You're game looks very polished. The mc is super cool, I could follow her for hours getting out of dungeons. The asset of the big bomb is on point. Don't get hit by the bombs and get out was a super funny. The MCs life must be hard. I hope she has a good cardiologist :D

Developer

Thanks a lot! Just follow her fast or you might be left behind with an explosion! 👀

She gets paid well, so she can definitely afford one. But I believe she can take all of this pretty well. XD

Submitted(+1)

Very well done game! Loved the story and the unique puzzle mechanics.
The last room was pretty tough , it took me 40 minutes to figure out the solution! XD

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks a lot! Yeah, I had to cut some levels, so I wanted to have a more challenging final level ti make up for it. I hope I didn't go overboard with the difficulty. XD

Submitted(+1)

Great experience all around. A complete story, engaging gameplay, optional bonuses, twintails... no notes! The last room really gave me a run for my money. So yes, I *did* have a blast!

Developer

Thanks, fellow twintails enjoyer! I'm glad you liked it! C:
