I really liked the concept and the art is great! You did a great job!

Good narrative!

I enjoy these old kingdoms type of story.

Fantastic game! Both jam themes are represented really well. The controls, visuals, and sound design are all excellent.

I especially loved the idea of finding your way through the darkness. The camera work and tutorial are also implemented very thoughtfully. We might even borrow some inspiration from a few of your ideas!

I’ll definitely show your game to the rest of our team!

thanks a lot, I would feel honoured.

It's a very interesting game. We played the jam theme very cool, and we also made slow burning, as a health gorenje. I was impressed. I liked everything about this game. We even managed to make customizable controls, it's cool. Attention to detail is great here. Well done, good luck with your future projects)

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot for your appreciation.

good luck with your future projects too.

Very original concept, nice

thanks

Okay, you really nailed it and your planning is so good that you were able to make good mechanics, good level design, be thoughtful of the theme and with lots of interesting turns through the gameplay. One of my favorites games this jam!

Developer (1 edit)

I really appreciate that you liked my game, thanks a lot for playing.

But tbh my planning was far from good lol, the project just ended shaping itself like this as I went developing it and thinking of what could work and what I should avoid considering the amount of time I had left. I am just glad the result in the end is something I can be proud of and people are enjoying.

I really liked your level design. It's honestly one of the best in this jam so far. The core gameplay mechanics are also really well put together.

I think it could be even more interesting if the amount of candle wax you have left had a stronger effect on your character's light, since that would make it work better as a visual indicator of your health. That said, I can also see how making the light dimmer could have an impact on the game's difficulty because of how much it would affect the visibility of the environment. Which would likely cause a lot of trouble.

Developer

Thanks a lot for playing

I also had this idea but ended deciding against it because I felt the game was already taking a turn to being harder, and knowing myself and my past game dev experience I tend more to making things harder than they should be... so I didn't want to risk it lol

controls were smooth cool game

Developer(+1)

thanks!

I think this has a really solid base, but it feels unfair. Platforming in the dark is pretty hard and then to have instant kill enemies show up before I'm even told how to attack... Then after I did learn how to attack it didn't seem like those enemies were affected by it.

Developer

Thanks a lot for playing!

But yeah the enemies that appear when it goes dark are only supposed to deliver your death. My initial idea would be that when time ends you just die, but after that I thought giving players a last chance to avoid that would be neat (by instead making it go dark totally and the ghosts start chasing you). So the idea would be that those enemies are supposed to be avoided or never triggered, but maybe I should have made that more evident.

Very cool game. Love that dying isn't necessarily dying if you can get to a checkpoint/candle quick enough. Really neat system. Gameplay controls were nice and smooth. No notes other than the lack of contrast as mentioned by other reviewers.

Developer

thanks a lot for playing!

Very cool I love metrdoid like games, the movement is very smooth.

The only thing i think could improve a lot is settings for contrast + brightness, since my monitor is trash, it was a bit hard to properly see, even close to character.

Very good game, good luck!!!

Developer

Yeah lol, i think this has been the main complaint, and it is a very fair one.

Thanks a lot!

I absolutely loved it, very enjoyable and great looking, I loved the vibe and the story, really set itself apart from the other games. The movement is very clean, however idk about losing health/light when dashing into walls, slows the gameplay too much in my opinion. (if that was the point thats great then!)

Overall great game, I had a genuinely great time playing through it.

Developer(+1)

I am really grateful for your appraciation of my game.

Btw you don't actually lose health when you dash into walls (or atleast you were not supposed to... maybe it could be a bug), you just get a knockback and screen shake effect similar to when you take damage (that might have been my fault, I should have made them more distinct to show you are not taking damage since how much damage you take is hard to see some times in the candle HUD).

But you can actually use this dash into the wall knockback to perform a feel skips in the game lol

great game!! not too easy but very fun to play; i really like the candle mechanic, and the order/timing of how the controls were explained - it feels very natural!

i agree with the other commenters - a brightness setting is one small thing that would improve a lot.

also one thing i really loved - the undertale-style beginning text, from the sound to the animated floating letters, it's so cool :3

Developer(+1)

I really appreciate that you liked my game, thanks a lot for playing.

Also yeah I only felt like I really started to cook something good when I made that starting scene with the monologue lol. And the undertale and deltarune DNA is quite visible, both in the start monologue and the fact the idea for the whole game is partly inspired by Jackenstein fight from deltarune.

np! :D

i havent gotten that far in deltarune yet, so i'll keep an eye out for the similarities when i get there :3

I really like your game! The mechanics feel very intuitive and rewarding to pick up on. I would agree that it was very dark even with my computer brightness up. This might not be accessible for some people, so making it just a bit brighter around the character would be great. Otherwise, this was really amazing!!

Developer(+1)

thanks a lot for playing my game.

About the brightness... yeah i should have added configuring this as an option in the menu, but lacked the time to do so.

nice

Solid game, good job

nice game!, the player controller was smooth and the lighting really set the mood. the only thing is that it was hard for me to know where the player is because everything was in the same color scheme. but other than that great game!

Developer(+1)

Yeah that is fair, sometimes stylistic choices can end up degrading the gameplay aspect a bit.

But thanks a lot for playing, I am really glad that you enjoyed.

Submitted(+1)

Great game, great build on the theme. Well done how all mechanics slowly build up with tooltips and uses.

Developer

thanks!

Submitted(+1)

I really liked it! Super polished and the lore and everything was really good.

I also think this is the 1st game i played without any bugs.

Developer

Lol it has its fair share of bugs, though thankfully they are rare and dont really degrade the game that much.
Thanks a lot for playing my game.
