Wonderful art. I do wish it focused more on the optional rules at the end of the submission. To me, the wax-reveal encounter generator was the most original part of the submission. I also kind of feel like the "fiend" part of the title was skipped over a bit.

probably the best orignal art in the jam, smart structure, jet maybe a little too random on the exploration side. A strong beatiful charming entry

Love the illustrations and weird color choices!! I think you pulled your punches a bit trying to make this generic and useable for any game/any level of PCs, etc... it's good to get specific in adventures!

Rad and totally gonzo, punk vomit candle creeps!

This looks so incredible.  I would want this printed on gloss paper to complete the aesthetic.  Well done!

I wish the font is not all caps (and decorative font too) as it's hard to read. However, the art is stylistically gorgeous and I love that you have the character maker. That fire hazard at the end is also a nice touch.

Crazy good art, must be said even though it's been said many times over.

I like how this is practically a layer to drape over another dungeon / adventure. I love that, and makes it very easy to insert in an ongoing campaign. I think one awesome way to use this module is by implementing it on a location players visited before (and that's dear to their heart), but has been waxified.

I have to keep this one in mind for that scenario :)

We spoke elsewhere about how cool this art is, but man it really sings. I'd love to see this done without space constraints so you can let everything breath.

Absolutely gorgeous, all of it, even the font. I love how overwhelmingly excited the whole thing is about wax and the heat mechanic and then unpacks this gnarly waxy toolbox for you to mess around with it.

The font is difficult, but the information design is so smartly handled that it doesn't matter so much - like the first page telling you outright that players are going to need a way of accessing fire, and then the second page going "you know, like these kinda characters". Or the hint that hey, players might need to light a villager to survive, and then later the horrific "candled villagers" illustration both reminding you that you can do that, but also showing you why you probably don't want to unless you don't have another choice.

Also just throwing in the "you could also use wax in real life! maybe! if you want!" mechanic right at the very end is so awesome and casual, but fits perfectly with everything else. Ah man. This is so great.

Amazing character art. Some of the best I've seen so far.  I'd switch the font for better readability. Great job!

The candle lich looks so cool! The mix of colors are great and I really like the textbox style of candles on the last page. I would echo that the font (especially everything capitalised) and some of the third pages text contrast makes it difficult to read. Great guidance on system, who doesn't love the idea of a Wax Dragon! Great creature designs and the different character example classes are all fun. Awesome job! 🕯️

The visuals are a slap in the face (complimentary) ! Looks like a lot of fun.

That introduction escalates quickly! I’m big on design that takes a focused motif and uses it to great effect, and I think the simple transformation of the more traditional “ice lich, covering the world in eternal winter” into “wax lich, converting the living into wicks” is very original. I like it a lot! I wonder what created the lich, in particular, given that it can be created from any high-level monster—traditionally, liches create themselves, but I wonder what kind of scheme would visit this calamity upon the town.

Your art is really cool, a bit psychedelic and comic book and full of flare—and those richly colored shadows. Neat module. I’d like more!

This art absolutely rips, and it manages not to sacrifice legibility to do it. At least not in the realm of contrast/organization, which is where something this stylized usually gets carried away.

The rules are fun and interesting too. Really think you did something special with your title prompt.

EDIT: If I have one tiny nitpick, it's that it felt kind of redundant to mention everything's a living candle in the D12 room table. But it almost feels like that was the joke?

Developer(+1)

Thanks a ton. I wish it was a joke but I really wanted to make sure people used the heat mechanic and probably pushed it too much but…they really are living candles.

Hah, fair enough! Better to be super clear than confusing

Absolutely beautiful art. The arm on page 1 has such gorgeous rhythms and the wax wolf and villagers are perfect designs. The adventure itself is really cool. I feel like it works despite being divorced from a specific location.

My only gripe is the font. It looks cool, but the block lettering makes everything run together and it's weirdly hard to see the punctuation. I had to concentrate really hard to parse the sentences even though it's well written. Otherwise it's super cool!

The font, it’s my favorite but you aren’t the first to mention this problem. It does some strange things with lines and certain punctuations too. My tendency to go style over legibility needs better balance. Since I get asked about print friendly options too, thinking of starting to look into making alternative versions that are easier to digest. Thanks for the kind words too.

Okay wax horror really got me. the heat mechanic is well written also

obviously plenty has been said about how dope this art is, so i just wanted to note that the order in which you've organized it also rules. starts strong with the candle knight, introduces a fun batch of player characters, lures you into a false sense of security with the goofier candle demon design, then BANG scary candle lich. so sick.

other thoughts:

  • having a paragraph be like "yeah this is basically a vessel for my cool wax mechanics, also i threw in some encounters and player suggestions for fun" has crazy power radiating off of it. respect.
  • hell yeah to being forced to light turned villagers for survival. i think i made a similar note on the gravity plague submission but i'd love to see more pressure being put on players for this to happen. i'm all about giving people difficult choices.
  • listen i respect going nuts with the font choices but there's a few spots where it gets a little too gnarly-- the heat check comes to mind as straining the eyes a bit since it's all narrow.
  • i like that 13 triggers the lich encounter. part of me wishes the lich's body form was tied less to chance and more to a tangible timer, but i get why you'd keep it on a d6 for compatibilities sake.
  • again, this being a very cool mechanic you can just slot into another campaign rules. the prospect of leaving a peaceful town and finding it all waxed up when you get back instantly injects any setting with sauce.

great work!

Oh my, what a wonderful entry!! I could wax poetic about the visuals and the color palette and the art style and the imagery and the Heat mechanics and the custom "classes" and so on forever. But the one thing that I love the most: the fact that having read this module in its entirety doesn't spoil it. I still can have as much fun as a player as someone who's never read this before! I bet playing this scenario with an experienced GM would be legendary. Well heckin done!!!

Very pretty & an obvious visual standout from the vast majority of other entries.

Really like how much effort you put into this system-neutral module to make sure it could fit as many other genres or systems as possible- very considerate, and quite the feat considering the space limitations. Bringing actual wax melting mechanics to the physical table is also a stroke of mad genius.

Original illustrations and a fantastic color palette. I love that this module can be used with any map. Very creative and unique style!
