Nice storytelling, wished you had used a more readable font. Its a lot of text.
Thank you! I really appreciate the feedback. The font readability is definitely something I'll keep in mind, especially for a game with this much dialogue.
i kinda wished it were a bit longer because i like interactive stories like these. The sprites are really readable and i like the silence before the music box, maybe just the font was a tiny bit hard to read but you cant really do much about that
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed the interactive storytelling. I appreciate the feedback on the font as well. Thanks for playing!
A short but impactful game. Seeing the end screen really made me reflect on my own life and experiences. Thanks for sharing
Thank you so much. I appreciate you taking the time to play and share that!
It’s hard for me to write this comment and chose the right words since I understand that you have said it’s a sort of personal story for you. I definitely don’t want to diminish anyone’s story, I just want to write something that could help you improve on as a dev. I really hope you can bare with me and be able to separate the personal story aspect from what I think of it as a game itself. With that disclaimer here’s my thought:
I actually didn’t think it hit me as hard as some of the other commenters. I’m not that good a writer myself, I just want to give you my thoughts on the writing. I thought the dialogues were not well written, it sounds very awkward. It’s not how people actually talks irl. Maybe you could say because of the settings of the game so it sounds off, but that kind of awkward writing kinda disconnect you from the emotional impact you were trying to deliver. The game is very short and didn’t have enough of a backstory of why should players should care about these characters so it’s also a reason why I didn’t connect with it.
The overall narrative of the game is also confusing. Specifically, you used the word “healer” in your game, which is quite a uncommon way to refer to a doctor. Maybe it could be more fitting if this was a medieval/fantasy settings, but the visual and the other props like the music box doesn’t support that. I checked out your itch page and it seems like it refers to some other projects or your own personal branding, and maybe you didn’t explicitly mean that the player character is a doctor, but just a way to refer to yourself. But either way I don’t think it works in the context of this game.
I also didn’t quite like the subpixel positioning of the player character but it’s a small complaint and some players may not care. The Y-sorting also doesn’t work in some tiles.
I’m glad you have made the game so you could share your story, but I hope these feedback can help you improve as a dev in the future.
Thank you for taking the time to give me such detailed feedback, and I appreciate how respectfully you approached the personal side of the game. The points about dialogue, clarity of the setting, and the technical issues are all things I can learn from. "Healer" was intentional because the game takes place in a fantasy world. I'm still learning, so I genuinely appreciate you playing and sharing your thoughts.
What a beautiful game, done with such simplicity, yet capturing so many emotions tied to someone’s loss. The theme was spot on. The dialogs were simple and touching, the mood was soothing and sad at the same time. Great job putting this together, seems like it was a really heartfelt moment you shared with us, thank you
Thank you so much for taking the time to play and experience it.
A deeply moving and touching scene. Art is all about self-expression regardless of the medium, and this is art. A warm, thoughtful peek at something we’ll all experience on both ends of that bed someday. Beautifully done.
Thank you so much! I'm glad that it connected with you. Thanks for playing!
This was unexpectedly emotional for such a short game. So bittersweet. Thank you for sharing it!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate you playing and sharing that with me.
Unfortunately none of the rating categories reflect story, emotion or just writing in general, yet that is the thing that this game thrived on. At first I was a bit confused by the setting, and thought it was a hospital of some kind, so the line where the healer says that they'll be blamed for the death felt odd, however once I realized the setting, the writing became way more emotional. I won't spoil the game for the people who have yet to play it, but the last slide really recontextualized the whole game for me. It's really touching that you made a game about something that is this important to you. This is proof that games can just as much be pieces of art as other mediums. While the gameplay was less than a point and click game, the hitboxes were weird, the graphics were cute but rather simple and the sole song in the game was like 16 notes repeating, I will give you high rating on all of the categories to make up for the lack of story or writing category. Kudos to you
Thank you for taking the time to write such thoughtful feedback. This was a very personal game for me, so knowing that the ending helped everything come together emotionally means a lot. Thank you for playing!
This was very touching and impressive how quickly you managed to get the player emotionally invested in the story. I was sat on the end screen just listening to the music reflecting on life and death... It's a really good interpretation your chosen the theme and works well both as a low res game and a short experience.
My only complaint is that the player seems to have a lower depth than the bed, but other than that it was really well made.
Thank you! Knowing you stayed on the end screen for a while, just reflecting, means so much to me. I also appreciate you pointing out the depth issue with the bed, that was something I couldn't get right. Thank you again for playing!
I was supposed to comfort him but in the end it was I who was comforted :( Thanks for sharing, gg!
Thank you! I'm glad the experience could give you a little comfort too!
This was a beautiful short experience. Thanks for sharing that.
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed it, and I appreciate you taking the time to experience it.
A lovely, heartfelt message and tribute to your grandfather.
Thank you so much. This game is very personal to me, and I appreciate you playing it.
Did not expect to tear up with such a short narrative T_T
Thank you! Hearing that means a lot to me.
Very touching and a lovely interpretation of a difficult theme. Well done
Thank you for the kind comment, and thank you for taking the time to play my game!
Short and sweet and super touching. I really appreciate the message and the creative interpretation of the theme. Good work!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate you playing.
Wow, really touched by this.
Not my usual genre, but this is wonderfully done!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate you giving it a chance.
Although there is not much in the way of mechanical systems, I still enjoyed this as a short experience. The interpretation of the chosen theme is quite a philosophical one. It's nice to encounter gentle reminders, like what you've created, about the things in life that we think we know but often forget in the chaos of our minds. They say we die twice: first biologically, then when we fade from all living memory. What a kind gesture to your grandfather.
Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this. This game was very personal to me, so knowing that the message came through and made you reflect means more than I can really say. I really appreciate you playing it and sharing this with me.
Did not expect this to hit so hard when I first clicked on it, really nice job. Was the not having background music until you turn on the music an intentional choice? Because I realy liked that touch to the overall feel.
Thank you so much, and yes. Not playing music until you turn it on was part of the plan when I designed this project. Thanks for playing!
