Great music, graphics, and sound design. The battle dungeon track is especially nice to listen to, and I loved the tiny crosses scattered around. Gave the whole thing a bit of a Dark Souls vibe.

The gameplay felt like a Zelda puzzler mixed with a Bloodborne-style roll mechanic. The bats are kind of OP with those projectiles and lunge attacks though. The room with the batwing gave me a rough time, but the save right before it was well placed.

With the different traps and enemy types, this feels like a really finished product. Those chests though. What a bluff!

Really happy I could play this on actual hardware. Giving you a follow, and happy to have this one on my Game Boy.

How many strikes to beat the guardian?

Developer

Thank you so much for playing it and glad that you enjoyed it!
We just made our first little update to 1.1 with some fixes, like the OP bats hehe ^^".
Music has gotten an overhaul, more music have been added as well as sfx.
It feels like you got the experience we was aiming for at lest :D

Gameplay is solid, albeit a touch finicky. I managed to glitch out the sword stab and make her have the sword out indefinitely, moving without animation once this was done. Sometimes spikes seemed to obstruct your path before they came up.

The graphics could've use some contrast tweaking, especially in the first area. Having the protagonist and the floor be mostly the same color makes everything kinda blend together. Either a lighter hue, or a darker hue (which I encountered later) helps to make it more clear where the main character is. The darker hue, however, obscures the spikes instead, making it really easy to careen into them. On actual hardware with less-than-perfect light, the darkest and the dark hues look not horribly different.

In some areas, stabbing with the sword made parts of the health/stamina HUD not display due to overloading the sprite limit.

Without any sword swing in the action combat, I could see bump combat with the sword always out working pretty well.

Music was good, and probably the highlight of the game.

This game's concept feels right at home on GameBoy.

Developer

Thanks for playing and the great feedback!
We had some bugs with the sword that we did not manage to sort out in time, and the spikes
can only be safely moved over by the roll to avoid damage, maybe they should come up faster..

In the first area we opted for a form of simple look or clean, mostly to make the other areas
feel like the dark dangerous ones but I agree that we could have re-worked the floor a bit to
make the character pop more.
For the darker hues and the hard to spot spikes, I ended up not noticing it due to playing on
a modded Gameboy with ISP screen, so I kinda missed how it would actually play on an OG
version with not backlight sadly. A miss on my part ^^".

Besides the bugs and finicky sword combat It feels like you enjoyed it and got the idea we
where aiming for :)  Glad you enjoyed the music as well, In our latest update we updated
the music quite a bit as we ran out of time in the end of the jam, hopefully it is even better now!

Thanks again :)

The first puzzle had me for quite a while and later died in a random doorway for seemingly no reason? Dunno honest. The game has a lovely idea with a puzzle mostly delivers quite well.

Graphics wise it look on spot. I do feel like sound effects are drowned out by the music, which at parts is really loud/busy? Could use some downtime for the track from time to time.

Overall nice zelda like puzzle game, well done

Developer

Thank you for playing!
Yeah we have gotten some feedback on the first puzzle and will look into making it a bit more clear or add hints.
We just made an update on some music stuff, hopefully it plays a bit better now with not as busy tracks in the dungeons :)
Thanks again!

The puzzles were pretty neat! Some aspects of combat felt a bit glitchy, and I had an instance of a skeleton warping its way through a wall, but I liked the mechanics. Dodging over the spikes was pretty satisfying, and once I got the hang of how it played it was pretty enjoyable.

I did struggle for identifying some of the interactable objects, and I think the pedestal telling folks how to dodge would be better served being right at the start of the game, since you can use it right way, and it's helpful dealing with the skeletons while ringing the bells. Also, really nice job getting this all working in GB studio!

Developer

Thank you for playing and the great feedback.

Moving the pedestals is something we might acrually do to give the info to the player straight away :)

We plan to do an updated build with a lot of fixes directly after the game jam is done!

This was awesome! Making the first puzzle a little more clear could be helpful but I loved the game. The art was exceptional!

Thank you for the feedback ๐Ÿซก

I know more people had some problems with the first puzzle being a bit unclear, we will look into sorting this out as soon as we are allowed to update our build!

Nice opening line, no one knew of its existence sets the scale before you see anything. and drawing the gb jam splash as an actual game boy with the logo on its screen is a good touch. the temple tiles read clearly too. nice job

Developer

Thank you! ๐Ÿ˜Š

The art is nice, but I did not figure out the first puzzle, and I seem to not understand what I'm supposed to do.

Developer

Thank you for playing! The door gives the hint. The bells must be rung in order.
