Cool to have some body horror in a game with this art stye, it leaves some of it to the imagination at the end there.  Good bunch of lore and  really pretty art!

Developer

Appreciate the kind words and based on YOUR games it's a high compliment:) Thanks for coming by to play and leave a comment!

(and also please keep making cool stuff)

Really interesting game! The atmosphere was very immersive and I really appreciated the art style. Also, you could really feel that the ending you get is the result of the main character's states of mind which, in turn, get influenced by your choices.

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for playing! I'm really glad you found it immersive :D

This is absolutely stunning! I felt the weight of every choice, and it felt so heavy (in a good way)!

Developer

Ayyy Thank you for playing!! Thanks for the feedback,, Hope you enjoyed :DD

incredible game, the story is well narrated, the possible endings and character development based on the choices really add up to it a lot. the visual style chosen is also really good, it feels some sort of retro, well polished too. overall a game that kind of won't let me go until i finish it lol

Thanks so much for playing and for the really kind feedback!! :D Really glad you enjoyed it!!!

This has an amazing atmosphere, love the cohesion throughout, the music fits perfectly and I Love the wee animations, they add a lovely polish to things! Story was encapsulating, and the choices made felt impactful with the gradual changes as you play.

TLDR, amazing project and fantastic work from the team!

I absolutely loved the whole experience!
The game perfectly captures the feelings of the protagonist, and I felt the weight of my choices!
Not to mention the art and the music, which were both spot-on!
I will take notes for when I'll make another VN!

Thank you so much for playing and for the lovely feedback!!! :D Really appreciate it and really glad you enjoyed it!!!!

I love the atmosphere. The consistent artstyle plus bgm set the mood quite well. The character visuals were incredible, and their subtle animations elevate the whole experience! Small suggestion for the chocie box,  I find myself accidentally picking an option when progressing through the dialogs. I think it might be because the choice boxes are in the same place as normal text. A slight delay after displaying the options can fix this issue.
As for the story (spoilers ahead!), the main plot was easy to follow. The first half introduce a bunch of towns people that gives the protagonist her initial set of tools. The second half have various encounters with monsters, and protagonist can either follow the moral path by fulfilling a trade, or become a monster herself. I find the second option much more haunting, since you get to see her slowly turn into a monster both figuratively and physically (by putting on various parts of monster), and it fits the theme very well!

Overall, a great entry!

Developer

Thanks so much for playing, and for your amazing comments on the story - I'm so glad you liked it! :D That's a really helpful point about the choice boxes too (we're going to be looking to implement feedback in future to make the experience as smooth as possible). Thanks again!!

Very well made entry with charming retro graphics and hauntigly good music!

Keep up the good work!

Developer

Thanks for playing! We definitely love being charmingly haunting.

I absolutely loved this. The whole game has such a strong atmosphere that I felt completely immersed from beginning to end. The art direction is incredible, especially the character designs. Every character has so much personality.
The music, visuals, pacing, and writing all work together incredibly well.

Overall, this was an amazing experience. I absolutely loved it, and I’m definitely going back to see all the different endings. Nice work! Keep going!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for playing and for leaving such kind feedback! (: Really glad you enjoyed it and I hope you enjoy all of the endings!!! (If you want hints on any of them feel free to message!)

This is an amazing game all around, but I especially love the art for each character. The brighter details (especially for the humans) really does a lot to differentiate them, and the design of each creepy little guy is so good. I also love how they interact with the text box. All the little details are so on point and seem so thought out. I only wish there was a little more time to look at each new scene before the text box covers it, but for the sake of pacing it makes sense to keep the ball rolling and we get to see them often when replaying anyway (the replay factor is also really strong, I want to see all the endings!). Amazing job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback!  And I'm glad that all those little details and designs were so appreciated.  That's a good point about how much time is given to look at each new scene and is definitely something we're still looking at:)  Hope you enjoy your next playthrough(s) and truly grateful that you took the time to try our game and leave a comment!

The art style and atmosphere blew me away. I felt so immersed and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. It's grizzly in all the right ways. Incredible.

Glad you enjoyed your time paddling through the spooky bayou! Thanks for stopping by to play and leave a comment!

Probably my favorite visual presentation this year. I love how something's always moving, it makes the setting feel alive and like anything can get you. However the tone was more somber than I expected.

This game has a really good grasp of bayou superstition and mythos. Even the rougarou showed up! The thing that always jumpscares me at the new orleans zoo because it's behind a corner. DX. Is there any set year this is set in? I'm guessing 1890's.

Anyway, 5's across the board.

Developer

Thanks for all the kind words and sharing your experience with the game!  It was fun to share with the team some of weirder superstitions and folklore around the bayou and in Louisiana in general.  And actually at the beginning of the jam I shared with them the picture of the rougarou from the New Orleans Audubon Zoo because that used to freak me out too! But it's so weirdly endearing looking at it now:)

We tried to set it roughly somewhere in the 1800s and the artist and writer did a lot to try and keep that in mind while creating everything!  Thanks again for playing!

What a great choice of setting, the pixel art direction around the dank, humid, bayou style swamp is excellent. Great work! It has a very welcome retro feel.

Some of the audio was mixed so well. That creaking sound right in my ears was giving me chills. The monocolour palette shifts felt properly intentional and worked well I think! It really felt more like an old-school text adventure game, rather than a visual novel. And that's not a criticism. Haha. Ticked all the right boxes for vibes. And then we have the minimalist art style. Chef's kiss. Fantastic job with this one, folks.

Really amazing game, I have never played anything like this, it vaguely reminded me of 'Slay the Princess', that's the closest comparison point I can think of. You should really go in blind if you play this! I never new what to expect :D There were quite a few legitimately scary parts as well, I'll never going to a bayou now XD

Developer

Thank you so much for playing and for the really incredible comparison (I loved Slay the Princess!) Im so happy you liked it! :D really appreciate the kind words!

I actually did a video walkthrough of this game and it is amazing and I don't have games that truly suck me in the lore of this world. It's like stepping into another place that I knew existed but never visited. The pixel art was incredible and the sound track very soothing yet eerie. I can't wait for more games from these amazing group of people. <3

Developer (1 edit) (+2)

Thanks for doing the video walkthrough! It was nice to hear your commentary and get your feedback on the game while you played! Glad you enjoyed all the lore and getting immersed in the world:)

If you want to play another game that a few of the same people worked on then please check out A Good Night's Sleep.

No problem! I am doing a marathon of scary games for the month of October and this game is very interesting and unique. I never seen nothing like it like it's a film and it's a Gameboy style. I'm honored to get the chance to play it!

I will check out A Good Night's Sleep because it feels familiar like I save it under *Games I most definitely will play* Thank you for the suggestion, randomdooodle!

Beautiful art, very original. The idea that the characters have to use masks to evade the monster is lovely; all the monster designs are creative, and the stories that they tell reminded me of old tales. The monster of the bayou being formed with the faces of the people that he killed is fantastic. It's impressive that you did all of this in Ren'Py. Amazing job!
