Very unique and relatable idea! The elements that imitated the actual Renpy GUI and saved your drawings were really clever, seems like implementing all of that might've been a lot of work! It does lend itself to some silly results when we don't take the prompts seriously, but that's okay haha. Some things are a bit rough or buggy (I got a few errors with text drawing over other text or lingering longer than I think it was supposed to, and some backgrounds panning too far so transparency showed through) but it almost adds to the overall vibe. The scratchy and sparse art style works in its favor.

I felt like the horror mostly kicks in near the end, but the beginning feeling like a grind is... kind of the point haha. I feel bad for our poor creator! I tried to help her socialize and hydrate! Almost feel like THAT should be the "good" ending, aha~

Thank you, especially for your feedback too! I have a big patch I need to fix it up with as well as making it a little easier to complete. One of the messages is sort of the sacrifice for something worthy and how we miss the mark. It is sort of poetic that the game is unfinished I made it in a very similar timeframe as the MC and a lot of the events are drawn from my experience making it. A lot of the horror is more existential  than physical and quite personal. The good ending introduces a new fear but the overall horror is that of existential dread.
Why do we make games? Why do we get so stressed? What if they're no good? What if we don't finish them?
These questions scare me haha..

Really, really good! The simplicity of the GUI works with the game, I found myself getting drawn in deeper and deeper into the world. I want to just block out a few hours in my day to try each and every choice! I'm stuck in meta-game development hell... I'm sure GAME is very unimpressed with me using Total Eclipse of the Heart lyrics as the story... Sorry GAME... Your creator is a little goofy with it!!!

Developer

Haha, thank you for playing! ^^ I have another update planned for it by the end of the month, the time constraints became a big style choice for the design.

Wow!! You've really made use of an incredible array of inputs and interactions in this one, without it feeling like too much - seeing the way those those interactive elements were brought back into the story was incredibly satisfying, and impressive from the coding perspective (especially for a solo dev!!). The minimalism of the artwork worked incredibly well in your favor, and worked great to create a sense of bleary, 2am coding. There's some good Ooph moments in the story, and your use of the medium itself woven into the plot and cinematography really well done - you get tons of points in my book for incredible use of very limited assets. The running line numbers in particularly felt like a really great touch of polish, along with that one CG where we see a bit more of the dev's face illuminated... really really striking, especially after only seeing partial images until then. There's also a nice meta element to the game showing you submitted just an hour and 22 min before deadline (absolutely no judgement on that front to be clear - we were 12 min and buggy). Huge congrats!!!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for your kind words. The numbers are from a real screen recording from my code editor, it was a very surreal experience making a game jam game for a game jam and getting stressed whilst doing it.
I wish I had spent the last hour testing it but I was too tired. I made it in just under the time you have in the game, my sleep was  also quite terrible. ^^
Still working on this project and expanding it, there are many ideas still to implement as well as a deeper room area to reveal more of her personal story and potentially VA some of the monologues.
ADDITIONAL WORK REQUIRED
But I will make it better.
Thank you!

Sadly my Five Nights at Freddy's fanfiction did not give meaning to the nothingness. It did give pain though, which I understand is better.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing!
There is meaning in darkness. Deep down. In the endless infinite. With enough sacrifice...

Submitted(+1)

If darkness was meaningless, we wouldn't be here. Tear the skin, rip the heart, flay the meaning from your guts and bones and blood and hope that others might drink greedily from the pain you inflict upon yourself. If you can't make them understand, it will always be just a body.

Lowkey angry that my amazing game about hyraxes did not score me the good ending (kidding). I really enjoyed this game, the creative use of user inputs beyond multiple choice made the game extremely engaging. I also replayed it multiple times and got all focus confirmed etc. just to see if I could get another ending but sadly no. I actually can't believe it was made in 7 days because of how complete of an experience this is. Fantastic job!

I'd say my personal complaint about this game is how harsh the dev is on herself. I know that is supposed to be a part of the horror and a reflection of the demon within all us devs but there is no perfect game in this world and even incomplete games deserve a chance. Now just let me submit my game about hyraxes to this jam please...

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

First of all you are very kind and have significantly motivated me to continue work.
I've only got the good ending once as the developer so don't be too hard on yourself! But it DOES exist its just almost impossible.. Much like making anything perfect. It's semi-intentional but quite overtuned. I have a very very big update for the game coming soon which should make things a lot clearer for the players.
About the self critical element of the developer herself you are absolutely correct. Even this unfinished game deserves some love and we all do try our best. But since its a horror game I only wanted to look at the uncomfortable existential dread demon. Although its interesting feedback I will very much consider. Thank you so much for taking the time to play it.

Working under time pressure for any game is more than familiar to me. Still, why did he sleep from Day 7 all the way to Day 5? 😅 And I think the idea of drawing in the game is brilliant. The horror moment for me was when a screen identical to the Ren'Py error screen popped up. I couldn't believe I was almost at the end and the program had crashed :)).

But is the ending basically about entering an endless loop that starts again after Day 0?

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you for playing! Yeah you are right it is confusing, Day 7 passes into 6 the same night and then you sleep into 5. It isn't very clear was a bit of a mistake and will be patched into simpler day to days.
There are 3 endings, the last is very hard to get currently, much like making a perfect game in real life it is quite impossible currently.
I will also patch this.
I made this game in 7 days, just like the protagonist and got quite stressed and driven quite mad over the deadline.
Several of the events of the game are real life events that occurred during production.
With a big update this month I shall fix it, make it better and make it more beautiful.
It is my purpose.

You’ve made me even more curious about the three possible endings. But I’ll wait for the improved version and play it again. Good luck with everything else you’re working on for this story!

Definitely one of the best games I've encountered here. As a fellow gameDev I feel for the protagonist...

Keep up the good work!

Developer

That's very kind of you to say and means a lot. There's a lot more work I would like to do before I consider it completed (similar to the game I made it in 7 days and ran out of time). In some ways its a bit of a love letter to all of the gamedevs out there. I think people on the outside don't realise the effort it takes to make or finish a game. We all still do it anyway  of course for the love but I think it would still surprise a lot of people to see it up close.
I will make it beautiful.

This was such an interesting concept and you executed it so well! It was really effective in showing how desperate the character felt and the pressure on her to make something - very relatable!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! You are very kind. It is pretty close to home and I have a lot more work to do on it. But thank you for your kind words!
