Is a low-quality review worse than no review at all?

Basically title. If you are a game dev, if someone made a video reviewing your game but the video quality was very novice/unprofessional, would you rather such a review not have been posted at all?

Or, in other words, do you only want video reviews made by people who can create at bare minimum semi-professional quality content?

Would you worry that low-quality content might effect players' perception of your game? Or would you be happy with whatever coverage you get?

I ask because I want to do game reviews again, but my setup is...nonexistent atm and I don't want to offend game devs if the videos suck.

Most of the video reviews I get are for feedback, and it doesn't matter the video quality. It would only matter if it was meant for significant marketing. I would be happy with whatever coverage you get.

You can review my game and I'll appreciate you: https://jhffmn82.itch.io/forge-of-the-elements

My view is: if you want to demand something, you have to pay for it.

If I want to see a professional-quality video, I’d have to pay someone; I wouldn't demand that level of quality from someone who is making a review purely for the love of it.

If someone wants to review my game, I’m happy about it; the quality of their video would never bother me.

Would a potential player stop playing because of the video quality? I highly doubt it—but if that were to happen, honestly, it wouldn't bother me. I make games for people to have fun, not for the sake of appearances.

Personally, I could review other player's review of my games to acquire feedback, regardless of quality.

However, if the low quality review were to be released in form of video and could be watched by many people, that is concerning for me and I rather that video not be released to prevent misunderstanding.

Speaking of video, I'd at least expect the reviewer to show gameplay video of reviewed game. At least, people could see how the game would play regardless what reviewer said.

I think the video quality doesn't matter. Getting video footage of someone playing your game is already a huge thing since you can use it to see their playstyle, what kind of mistakes they did or bugs they encounter, and more.  If someone else do decide to watch that video then they won't mind the quality of the vid and the viewer might give the game a try if they see it something like they would play. No matter the quality, I am already happy that someone was willing to make a review of my game.

Nah, from where my game is at, I'd be happy for anyone to review it! For me, it's mostly out of curiosity, to see how they find it, how they play, what is fun and what is not, and so on.

I have seen people do video reviews making fun of my games and so long as the humour is in good taste, I don't mind.

low quality is effectively better because it seems more authentic

indie is indie, so professional is not the vibe

I’d never be bothered by the video quality in a review of my games.!!

It's not about if you get a review or not, it's about what is SAID about the review.

As someone who just released a game here, I'd take the novice video every time. Even a rough recording shows me the exact moment someone gets confused, and that's worth more to me than a polished review that just says "it's fun".

The only case where I'd worry is if the video gets something wrong about the game, like calling it broken when it isn't. Even then I'd rather reply in the comments than not have it at all.

Did anyone here actually have a bad review hurt their game?

As a game developer, I don’t care about production quality in reviews. I don’t care about reviews not being engaging. I don’t care about the reviewer not spending a lot of time on my games. And while I’d rather see a positive review than a negative review, it doesn’t bother me when a reviewer doesn’t like my games or points out legitimate flaws in my games. I’m just happy that my games are getting reviewed at all.

I do care about my games being misrepresented. Please try to be fair and accurate in any reviews you do.
