The third section is so hard! Like in the good way. The tint platforms with ceiling are my worst enemy now. Also, I like your pixel art :)
I love the way the character's sprites changes at that one section! Really shows that they are in a place that doesn't exist (I mean theres others factors i.e the black bg, the changing of sprites of the tiles, and the tiles itself, but still). I specially love the head hitting sequences! I realized you aren't supposed to do it 1 by 1 but instead use the momentum and just time your jumps. It was quite a short game but it was fun nonetheless!
I wanna play more of this because the story seems charming but the second platforming section was so brutal lol. The tiny platforms under the really low ceiling in the graduation section, I tried so many times but never managed it or felt much improvement. I took so long that the music stopped lmao. Regardless though, the art looks really clean and I enjoyed what I did see! Thanks for sharing your game!
Aww I'm very sorry to hear that as the end is where it gets good and most of the rating categories come in lol. Thanks for giving it a try and sorry you had trouble!
Cool game. It was a bit too tough for me and I rage quit at the delivary section though. Good job tho
Sorry you didn't get to see then latter half of the game as that's where the limitation and most of the important stuff for the game comes in, thanks for giving it a try though!
Really loved this one! As others have said, great interpretation of the limitation, and I thought the writing was really nice. The surprise I felt when I realized this wasn't just a platformer was nice.
As for the platformer itself, it was a good one! Actually some decently challenging sections, and a good length for a two-week jam.
I liked that the music turned off during the "real life" sections in between the platformer, with the person trying to get Tom's attention. It was jarring in a good way, really shifted the scene and made me wonder what was going on. Then the music continued as Tom drifted off again... Nice touch.
Speaking of music, you picked some good tracks, but I do wish more people would give the music community here a chance to shine. In your case, you had some tracks you really liked and wanted to use, and there's nothing wrong with that and they fit your game beautifully. But I think next time it would be cool to take a chance on a composer from the group (there are so many to pick from!) Best case you meet someone cool, they get a chance to participate and gain experience, and you get a track totally unique to your game. Worst case, they don't deliver and you use this music anyway.
That aside, you have a really lovely game here, and it was a treat to get to play it!
Thanks so much for the kind words, it means a lot! As for the composer I definitely would like to work with one, but I didn't realize there were ones that weren't already on teams (also I wasn't confident enough in my ability to make a good game that didn't waste good music). Thanks for the note, and I hope to be able to work with a composer (as well as an artist as I am very much not an artist) on my next project!
As a composer myself, I have never worried about writing music for a game that "wasn't good enough", so don't worry at all about that! Most of us are relieved to be able to write music for anything at all, and lots of us are worried about our music not stacking up to the game. Lots of composers do jams for the same reason everyone else does: it's amazing practice! We want to try and fail and gain experience and test things out and learn and grow on these projects just like everyone else does. I hope that calms some of your fears about it, lol.
Plus, almost anyone would be happy to write music for a game that rocks as much as yours, so don't sell yourself short!
That's very kind, thank you! I also appreciate you sharing that about composers, good to know. (Btw I love your music in smoke and mirrors it fits the game so well)
Lovely story and narration, and great implementation of the limitation :)
Thanks so much for the kind words!
I really liked the concept of this game; the story and narration was really good! I enjoyed most of the gameplay, but I think the super thin pillars with a block on top was a little too difficult. Either having the pillars a little bit thicker or having the blocker a little bit higher (even by 1 pixel) would have been a bit easier. I did feel myself get better at that mechanic over time, though!
It would have been nice to have the music be a continuous loop. I think I spent way longer on those thin pillars than you were expecting, so there were some parts where there was no music for me, which made me sad :(
I think the transitions could also be polished a little bit more (some of them took too long, and you could hear the audio restart each time a transition occurred), but for a game jam, that's negligible.
Overall, despite my skill issues I really enjoyed the game, and the storytelling!
Ughhhh I can't believe I forgot to set the main music to loop, sorry about that! With it being a game jam I just didn't get around to making sure the music smoothly transitioned in the last cutscenes, sorry about that as well! Thanks for all the kind words and notes!
Great one! i dont know what it is, but in some way the art is very nice in a unique way. The animations could be a bit more polished and so the camera, but these are just little details. Even if the sounds and music isnt by u, its very well choosen and feels cozy. The jumps were fun, and the game had the perfect lenght to play through without getting bored.
Wish I would find the love of my life with just wearing a scarf...
Thanks so much for the kind words and feedback! Maybe you just aren't wearing scarves enough π€
God, this is a really good game... I really like how you used the narrative and story to tell the limitation, and the platforming was so fun too. The glitchy effect really shocked and intrigued me. The pixel art is so nice and charming too, the storywriting is very good too. Overall a really good entry !!!
Thanks so much for the kind words! I was really impressed by how you used the limitation in the narrative of your game as well!
wow. just wow... Awesome game
Thanks so much!
Really nice experience and heartfelt as well. Change really is the only constant. Thanks for creating and sharing this! Loved the art as well. I thought that first other kid was glitching out until I played the whole thing. Feels really polished for a jam! I enjoyed the sections that had the ceiling jumps where you had to jump in rapid succession those were fun. I would have liked a small hint when I reached a checkpoint, I was always worried I'd have to redo the whole level when I died but the checkpoints are forgiving, I just wish I knew when I got a new one. Good game feel. Great game well done!
Thanks so much for the kind words, encouragement, and feedback!
Really heartfelt game! I thought the music complemented the story perfectly and helped set the mood throughout. The platforming controller felt good too, with nice, snappy movement and variable jump heights that gave you good control over jumps. I also liked how the story slowly unfolded between the platforming sections, and the ending really brought everything together. This is impressive, especially for one of your first games. Nice job!
That means a lot, thanks so much!
Great game! Didn't expect to see a narrative-driven game in the jam but it's refreshing to see. The music was nice and relaxing and the overall message of the game I resonate with.
The platforming in the game could use some tweaking in my opinion. Often times I would slide off, especially on the narrow platforms. Also some jumps made the platforms go off-screen, making it harder to gauge where I want to land. Lastly, the last section with the translucent ground made it harder to see where the platforms were.
Great pixel-art and I especially loved the cut scenes, I also loved your options menu! Offering the ability to rebind keys is always a plus. Great job!
Thanks for the kind words and feedback; I really appreciate it! I definitely should've tweaked the platforming some, but you live and you learn!
This is such a cool and heartfelt piece of storytelling! I really liked the visual effect as the world glitches and the change in the music. Those head hitting parts were rough, but I made it eventually haha. My one note for improvement would be that some adjustments to the camera could help the player experience. A couple times I would jump and lose sight of the block I had to land on below me. Also a bit of smoothing could be nice so the view doesnβt change so abruptly all the time. Great work!
Thanks for the kind words! I appreciate the feedback on the camera, I definitely should've improved it a bit!
What an experience! The story was really meaningful and I really enjoyed what you did with the limitation, haven't seen anything similar in the jam yet!
Some personal suggestions for the gameplay, if you don't mind! You may want to include the "platformer shadow" or a form of it so that it's clearer where the player will be landing. The parts with the ceilings were also quite challenging but still doable. The dialogue was meaningful but I'd suggest that you have more consistent Capitalization and Punctuation, it's something I learnt in my game dev classes and it does really add to the polish of the final product! Hope the feedback helps a little.
I had a great time with the game and I made it to the very end :)
Keep up the great work!!
Thanks so much for the feedback! I agree with every criticism you gave and hope to use your feedback to improve my future projects. Thanks for the kind and helpful words
This game was truly good and at least to me was very touching. The interpretation of the limitation was really cool and felt unique 5/5 on that. The gameplay was cool in between the segments but the ceiling parts were a slight bit challenging, not too bad though. The music design and sound effects were also good too. Really good work here!
Thanks so much for the feedback and the kind words! I really debated with myself about whether or not people would struggle with the ceiling parts but ultimately decided to leave them in because they were my favorite sections. After seeing peoples feedback however, I have learned that I most certainly should have removed them lol.
Good work. I like the art you made. The story is interesting too.
When your granpa tells you that when he was young he walked hell on earth to reach school. This is the example hahah
However, I found the platforming levels a bit too hard when the ceiling is too close and I feel that the theme and limitation are missing/are too weak.
Thanks for the feedback. I apologize for the difficult levels! Did you finish the game because the ending is what makes my use of the limitation clear? Totally ok if you finished it and just didn't like my execution, I just wanted to make sure!
Your character sprites were awesome! and great music choice!
The character acceleration was a bit too aggressive for me, it made a bit difficult to control how far I jumped
Thanks for your feedback and kind words! I'm sorry that the character acceleration wasn't to your liking. I hope you enjoyed the story anyway!
Very ambitious idea for a jam, a platformer with a story
The idea was executed well, the controls were responsice, which is probably the most important thing in a platformer. Game had no technical issues and ran well in the browser.
The art and music was really good, the story was cool.
Overall, very enjoyable experience
Thanks so much for your kind words, it means a lot!
Lovely story, and the music and art style were very complementary! It might've been a genre thing that I'm just not a huge fan of, but personally I found a lot of the tight-ceiling jumps very frustrating. I got all the way through to the end tho! I liked how you worked the limitation into the narrative aspect.
Thanks for finishing my game despite the "head-hitters"! I really appreciate your comment and I apologize for any frustration the platforming caused.
