Very calm soothing game. The concept is self explanatory and easy to understand.  I had some challenges with moving the pages but then realized holding a leaf and hover over one edge of the book would flip the page.
Loved the "restart button == null" message at the end of the game. I also lacked a restart button but wasn't creative enough to leave a playful message like this.
Great work!

Developer

Thank you for trying out the game last minute yesterday

(o´▽`o)ノ

Ah, Yes! Holding the leaf to flip pages was the first mechanic we had to turn the pages. But when we play tested, we realized people interact with the book very differently.

Haha I'm glad you found the restart funny! We probably have to code that properly.

Such a cool idea for a child’s game! I feel like Those are really lacking in this time periode, where most of “child’s game” on mobile are some kind of blatant advertising tool or cash grab, when it’s not just lazy ai stuff thrown together 😫

I will start with my couple of regrets so I can end my review with the positive!

1: I think the end talk should not trigger next sentence on a timer, but through player input only, to let kids all the time they need to try to read it by themself without running out of time. It happened to me to not be able to read the entire sentence because I paused to think of what would be the french name (my native language) of the tree for the leaf that looked the most like a potoleaf xD

2: I feel that that last dialogue was a bit redoundant as it adds no informations/funfact nor story telling to leaves as it goes throuhg them all. I like how it highlights their name once again, but to me it feels like a lost opportunity to add to each of them something that would help the kid remember them by tying those leaf to the “emotional” side of their brain (“oh it’s funny this leaf is not only pretty but what has been told about it was cool/made me laugh/reminded me of a cherrished memory!”)

3: I wanted to play it on phone, but the music/sounds didnt work at all, so I add to play it on pc, others might encounter the same issue so I figure I would let you know

Now that all my little nitpicking as been done, I liked the fact that you can personalize your book by replacing leafs with one you might like better at any time. The atmosphere was well put together, really calming and cozy. I overal really enjoyed the art. The controles are super intuitive. The game is simple but it knows what it wants to do, and do it well! (Almost forgot to highlight how nostalgic the experience was, as a former child who, like million of other former childs, gathered leaves in autumn as a child 👌)

GG for that jam entry, I had a great time discovering it, I also found like 2 gnome friends so, yeah, you have in front of you some kind of super popular charismatic super star 😎👌🍁

Developer(+1)

Hi there! That's some really good feedback and I appreciate that! And no we didn't know that users could experience or - not experience the music, I wouldn't even know how to begin debugging that 😂 all the phones in our household are pretty similar haha

Developer(+1)

You are soo generous and kind with your time and feedback!

(*≧ω≦)

Thank you very, very much! We appreciate it! I worked on the art for this game, so I'm gonna let my partner get all the criticism while I bask in the praises.

(σ≧▽≦)σ

Haha just kidding! I was responsible for the writing, so I gotta polish that one. I wrote the ending scene near the deadline so it was rushed. I really like your suggestion, so I'm gonna start making a proper character design for Grandma.

Thanks again for playing! Imma try your game again and give a detailed feedback as well!

This is such a delightful way to learn more about different types of leaves/trees!! I enjoyed being able to pick which color leaves I wanted for my book. I also enjoyed the little detail of the leaves you pick up moving the leaves around them!

Developer(+1)

I'm glad that people are learning so much about leaves through this game. I just started appreciating Autumn and fallen leaves this game jam

(≧∇≦)b

Submitted(+1)

Probably the most autumn game of the jam, didn't expect to learn so much from it (๑╹w╹)✎ I had problem finding the Alder leaf because it's so similar to a American Elm leaf but only smaller. Really enjoyed the nature vibe and showing off my collection here ✨

Developer(+1)

You.. you played with the gnome..

(╥ ω ╥)

It makes me happy that someone actually played with the gnome. I added a code that if you played with it A LOT, he will eventually go near you. I am hoping to add a special cut scene with the gnome post jam as well.

Awesome collection! If we had more time, I would have wanted the player to see the actual coloured leaves they picked. But coding is hard, sometimes. Especially when brain has been coding for days and deadline is in hours

ಥ﹏ಥ

P.S. I LOVE YOUR AVATAR! I am now inspired to make a GIF avatar for myself ≽^-⩊-^≼

Funny to know there's a gnome ending XD

Developer(+1)

Woah! The gnome appreciates you wanting to play with him

( ≧∀≦)ノ

I shall play your game again! Need some dopamine hit

Pretty fun and educational game for identifying autumn leaves. The maples all look pretty similar to each other but still distinct enough to tell them apart. I like the idea of the leaves shuffling around in the background when you open the journal. I did also try the funny thing of putting all the leaves in the incorrect place which is kinda funny, even though the game said "you didn't have fun huh" but I actually did have fun.

Developer

(≧▽≦)

Thank you for your comment! I am so happy that people are learning about Autumn leaves because they are very pretty when you pay attention to them. I wanted to add more Maple leaves actually (There are 12 of them!) but thought it would be too much. Someone in the comments suggested to pace the introduction of leaves so I might add more leaves in the game as long as it's not all at once.

Thank you again for playing and for your kind feedback!

I will be looking at nearby bakeries tomorrow to find me some Mooncakes. Your game got me craving for them! (っ˘ڡ˘ς)

This game is beyond fantastic! I love games that teach you little things about life and inspire curiosity in nature!  This had the perfect mix of coziness and difficulty. I LOVED the variation in the leaves, it made it feel so real. I genuinely want to go outside and do this in real leaf piles now.  Amazing job to everyone who was involved with this project. Easy 5/5!

Developer(+1)

"I genuinely want to go outside and do this in real leaf piles now."

YAY! I am so happy you feel this way after playing the game. I wanted it to be something that grandchildren and grandparents can play together and hopefully make the young'uns want to go outside and appreciate nature. To see the same effect on other age groups makes me smile

( ˶ˆᗜˆ˵ )

There is still a lot to polish! You are too kind to give as a high rating. Thank you!

Submitted(+1)

You can't get anymore "autumn" than this game. It's cozy, relaxing, and fun, but I wish Nana didn't seem so dissapointed when I got FOURTEEN of the 15 leaves. "I'm sure you'll do better next time" was this time not good enough?!?! Jokes aside though, I really don't see any problem with this game.

Developer(+1)

HAHAHA! Oh goodness. Grandmas are quite strict, you know?

.·°՞(≧ᗜ≦)՞°·.

Looking at our code, I realized it's a very harsh judgement. You only get praise if you got all correct leaves!

Okay, Imma program Grandma to be a bit softer. ദ്ദി ˉ͈̀꒳ˉ͈́ )✧

Thanks for playing our game and for trying your best to get Grandma's approval!

Submitted(+1)

Lovely idea for a game, I really enjoyed it. I like how the leaves don't perfectly match the shape on the page to show that natural variation. I can imagine the game being paced out a bit more, like if grandma gives you just a few to find at once, and then you report back and she tells you about the leaves you just found, then gives you some more to find. If this game is intended to teach about leaves then spreading out the info a bit more rather than having it all at the end could help. Lovely entry tho, thank you for sharing your game!

Developer(+1)

" I can imagine the game being paced out a bit more, like if grandma gives you just a few to find at once"

That... is not a bad idea!

(╭ರ_•́)

Actually, I wanna change the game into something similar as you said. Given the time limit, we just focused on finishing a working game, but as a learning process, it is quite overwhelming to be presented with many leaves at once. Thank you so much for this suggestion!

ദ്ദി(˵ •̀ ᴗ - ˵ ) ✧

What a lovely game! Using the game to actually teach people the shapes of the leaves is such a wonderful concept, and it was well executed. Also, props to you for making a game playable on mobile!

The music was lovely, and I really appreciate that you credited the artists from Pixabay correctly! That said, I would love to see more people give composers a chance to participate. There are so many composers (and SFX artists, too!) looking for groups for these jams and it's a shame more of them don't get a chance to shine because people look outside the jam for their audio. You should give them a try! Worst case, they don't produce something, and you use music from Pixabay anyway. But best case, you meet someone cool, they get game music experience, and you get something original to your game!  Edit: They did pick a composer but didn't end up with any tracks. Great music choices and props for crediting properly!

Anyway, that small point doesn't detract at all from the quality of your game, which is very good! The theme was very cozy, the art was nice, matching the leaves was enjoyable, it worked well, and looking for the gnome was fun. I did run into a small bug where the pointer in the leaf pile (indicating that you could pick up the leaves) got stuck on the screen and wouldn't go away even after I picked up several leaves and put them in my book.

Overall a really nice experience, thanks for submitting!

Developer(+1)

First of all, thank you for the encouraging words! We are trying to revive the art of Leaf Collecting through this game

( ˶ˆᗜˆ˵ )

We did have someone who was supposed to make the music for the game (a.k.a. our daughter), but she was consumed with Project Hail Mary and spent her time making animations instead. 〜(꒪꒳꒪)〜

With only 5 days left, we needed music so we had to scour Pixabay. But maybe, this is a challenge I will try for the next game jam: to find other teammates and meet new talents.

Regarding the pointer thingy bug.. that's on me (,,>﹏<,,) One hour before deadline, I wanted to fix a bug, but I ended up releasing a worse bug and by the time submission is closed, it was too late. I was actually waiting for someone to point that out. So thank you for being keen and upfront about it!

Submitted(+1)

Ah, in that case, you did exactly the right thing and I take back my comment! It's never bad to go and use some outside music if your don't end up with any music, and you picked some lovely tracks!

Submitted(+1)

Gorgeous game! We love it when people make their art themselves! Me and my partner being artists ourselves makes this our number 1 criterium to define the game (often even if the art isn't good, as long as it's made by the creators) and your art is both gorgeous and homemade! The game really captured the essence of autumn, especially for me being someone who regularily collects leaves once they start looking golden falling from trees :)

Also, kudos for making a mobile playable game! We played on PC, so we didn't get the mobile experience, but we understand how the controls would have worked on a touchscreen. Overall a great jam game!

Developer(+1)

Hehe ( ⸝⸝´꒳`⸝⸝)

Thank you. I really appreciate that you and your partner took the time to play the game and share your lovely words with us.

I am happy to find couples and families working together on game jams!

I think this game has become one of my favorites! Everything was so cozy! The colours, the beautiful art and leaves, I wanted to cuddle the gnome and look at the leaves forever! And the music was relaxing and so nice!

I loved the animation for the little book/journal, and the idea for this game was really good! I think I could go on for a long while listing all the things I loved. What an amazing job you have done, Very well done! <3333

Great idea for a cozy, educational experience. In a former life I knew all of these by their leaves (and more), so it was fun for me to come back and revisit tree identification in a setting like this. The gnome was a nice touch as well. Strong autumn vibes and nice visual aesthetic here as well. Thanks for making and sharing your game!

Developer

I had to re-read your comment.. What do you mean "in a former life"? (ᵕ—ᴗ—)

I must be watching too much anime because I immediately thought you remember your past life before you reincarnated.

( ⓛ ω ⓛ *)

Thanks for stopping by and playing our game! I am hoping to make more educational games in the future so to see many people find a positive learning experience through this game warms my heart as someone who likes teaching.

Submitted(+1)

Seeing and learning the names of all the different types of tree leaves was actually pretty interesting! I enjoyed learning the little extra details about them at the end of the game, and also seeing all the variations in color they had during gameplay. The leaves are drawn wonderfully; they made me want to take a trip somewhere with actual fall foliage and just stare at trees for a while haha. The music fits the game so well too and gives off a chill autumn vibe. And the little gnomes were a cute addition! I also liked the whole idea of collecting leaves and putting together a book, it works so well for a cozy game. Very comfy game.

Developer(+1)

٩(ˊᗜˋ*)و ♡

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed learning about leaves. We live in a small town surrounded with mountains and trees so we are fortunate to appreciate Autumn and its beauty (although it's actually Spring now where we live)

You found the Autumn gnome! You are the first person to comment about it. The gnome is my partner's and child's favourite part of the game. They don't play the leaf collecting game at all and just ignore Grandma. They just see who can find the gnome first.

ꉂ(˵˃ ᗜ ˂˵)

Thanks again for playing our game!

P.S. I enjoyed the game you made! It's really fun ദ്ദി(˵ •̀ ᴗ - ˵ ) ✧

Such a cozy game with really pretty art! I really enjoyed looking through the leaves, trying to find them all, and picking out the right ones for the book. Great idea for the jam, and it came together really well! I played on PC, but I'll have to try it on mobile. Great work.

Developer(+1)

✧。٩(ˊᗜˋ )و✧*。

As the artist of this game, your comment makes me really happy! I spent hours making the leaves. They were initially painted like this:

... But the file size of each leaf was too big for mobile gaming (and there are 15 of them!). I'm glad people still find them pretty even when I switched to vector graphics.

Thank you so much for checking out our game! Imma play yours now ( ∩´͈ ᐜ `͈∩)

Thank you for teaching me tree names in English :D  a couple of species that are not at all common where I am from as well! Never knew there were tulip trees, they look awesome!

Developer

Awww (ㅅ´ ˘ `)

That is so good to hear that you've learned something from our game. Thank you!

I love the gameplay, but i find a bit confusing how you interpreted limitation of jam. Good game after all!

Developer

Thank you for trying out our game and for your generous comment! (˶ᵔᗜᵔ˶)ノ゙

It's a very subtle change, but the leaves do move when you are not looking (e.g. when the book is up). We mostly had fun with the optional limitations:

  • There is a gnome following you whose position changes whenever you go in a pile of leaves and back to the park. Like a mini hide-and-seek game.
  • Then we limited the player to seeing only two leaves at a time which works exactly like how you would look at a book, two pages at a time!

We wanted a cozy, kinda-educational game that kids can play so we went with this direction

I KNOW RIGHT?! (*˘︶˘*).。.:*♡

When I was looking for music, I immediately fell in love with the two songs played in this game. If you wanna look for nice instrumental piano music for your future games, I am highly recommending the artists:

Really cozy game! I loved the facts and the ending, and the art and music were lovely. On my first playthrough, I thought the book only had one page, then realised at the end that I could flip through it 😅 I replayed it and managed to do a lot better! Well done!

This was a nice one! The leaves were drawn very accurately, and I enjoyed the fun facts at the end. The music was chill too.

I am the artist of this game so I'm quite happy with your comment.

I spent the entire game jam looking at leaves...
