Assets (e.g. free or purchased assets used in the game)

Have you participated in a game jam before this one?

Yes

Roughly how much time did you spend developing? (in hours)
20-ish

Anything else you'd like to share about your game or development process?
Mechanics-wise this is a trip back to my comfort zone. Then again, I haven't made a shooter in almost a year!

First game (at least for me) where a part of the development process was going for a walk in the woods! Funny enough- kkuba (who makes all the 2d graphics for our games) went for a walk to the same forest a day later and he saw actual, real-life boars there!

The pacing felt slow to get to night time, but i really enjoyed the environmental design and the hogs were kind of cute. the telegraphing of where to go to find the hog was clever also, good work.

actually scary, the atmosphere in the forest with many trees and the lack of music makes it super creepy at first!
but there was a problem like how i was teleporting randomly ( dont know if that is by design )

and when night came i got spooked at first, but after that i killed the boss( first try ), overall a nice and spooky game

Didn't get the HOG, it got me twice. Nice game, actually very good. It was fun to chase those hogs. Graphic, sounds and controls very pretty polished.

The game is quite good! However I did not manage to reach the night part as I was struggling to hunt boars. I think you can make the player see boars through trees as white outlines, or there could be some arrow pointing towards the location of the boar to make hunting them easy.
One problem I found was that the player got stuck between some trees and terrain. I'd suggest adding a simple jump mechanic so that if you get stuck, you can simply jump and get out.
One other bug I found was that, the text that appears when you kill the first boar retriggers if you shoot that dead boar again.

But otherwise, the art and SFX were good, and the game loop is also good! 👍

The reality hog got me twice :( my reactions arent good enough! Great concept though and really liked the hunting part of the game. I got a bit lost getting the first couple of boars but i guess that was part of the hunt, so then i got better at it for the next few.

The boss fight was a really cool concept and fit the theme really well.. i sort of got the sense of how to do it but my aim really is bad for fps  games so couldnt kill the hog. Probably an on-screen UI for the direction from which the hog will come might have been useful.

Overall really fun worldbuilding and the picture of the woods is lovely, i can see where the look of the game was inspired from!

Developer

Thanks for playing, finishing and the review!

I'm starting to suspect no one saw the good ending of the game yet :D

Seeing your comment I think you had the intended experience! You got better at the hunting and then fought the REALITY HOG. I was afraid of making that fight too easy, but turns out I didn't :D

As for the picture- my brother saw some actual boars in that forest the day after I took the picture!

I played through to one of the endings. The hunter-becomes-hunted turn is a good foundation, and I liked how the nearest-hog distance indicator changes purpose once night falls. During the day I was using it to find a target; at night I was watching it to work out how close the threat was while searching for those yellow eyes.

The oversized REALITY HOG text also gives the narration a recognizable identity. There’s some personality in the rough, mixed visual style, and the music when the ending credits arrived was a particular highlight for me.

The biggest friction I had was during the daytime hunting. Sometimes I was close enough to spook a boar without having a clear enough view to line up a shot. Moving closer to see it better would make it run, so those moments felt more like struggling to get a usable sightline than figuring out a better approach.

I don’t think that necessarily needs faster movement or easier shooting. Clearer sightlines around some of the hunting positions, stronger visual separation between the boars and the environment, or a clearer warning that I’m approaching the distance where they’ll flee could make that part feel more deliberate.

The fixed walking pace and slower shot/reload rhythm also weren’t quite to my taste. I can see how that restraint could support tension, so I wouldn’t automatically suggest speeding everything up. For me, though, it made the stretches of searching more noticeable, especially when I was already having trouble getting a clear view of the target.

Audio-wise, I enjoyed the music more consistently than the effects. My own footsteps felt quite loud over time, and the shooting/reload effects didn’t feel as cohesive to me as the music did. I’d look at the relative levels first, especially during the nighttime section when I’m trying to locate a threat.

The shift into nighttime danger came through clearly, but the broader existential-horror angle didn’t land as strongly for me. I only reached one ending, so that’s specifically my reaction to the route I saw.

One possible bug: occasionally, after walking for a while and then stopping, my position seemed to snap backward by several meters. I couldn’t identify a consistent trigger, but it happened a few times during the browser playthrough.

Overall, the slower hunting style wasn’t entirely my thing, but there’s a clear idea here. The reversal at night and the way it changes how you use the distance indicator are the parts I’d preserve.

Thanks for playing! Double thanks for playing to the end, and triple for super detailed review!

I like that you noticed the "tool reversal" I did in the night hunt! While were on the subject of "hog radar" I figured that I should have made an indicator of when you are about to spook a boar. Changing font color depending on the distance is easy and I see that the players find the boars too easy to scare. If I get to making a post-jam-version I'll add it. And a crouch button. I feel it would help with the sightlines.

Most of the times I make a shooter I end up with a fast-paced one (although I haven't made one in over the year). I felt that the "hunt" should be more deliberate than frantic.

During the night hunt I tried to use 3d sound together with volume scaling with distance to help the player gauge the REALITY HOG's position. I had... mixed effect, but I think the idea is ok. After- jam release will probably feature some visual clues, or at least stronger flashlight.

The existential horror comes more clearly in other ending (although is hinted a bit in the one you got too). It was bold of me to expect players to get both endings though. I was afraid the bossfight is too easy... turns out it wasn't!

As for the bug- at this point I'm aware of some, but this one I haven't seen reported yet. Might be difficult to reproduce, but I'll see what I can do!

Once again- big thanks!

Thanks for explaining the thinking behind it! The more deliberate hunt makes sense, and I wouldn’t necessarily want you to speed everything up. My biggest difficulty was getting enough visual information to make a deliberate approach, so a warning on the distance indicator sounds like a good way to address that while preserving the pace you intended.

Knowing you were using directional sound to help locate the hog at night also gives me more context for the audio. That’s where bringing the player’s footsteps down a little might help those threat cues stand out.

One clarification on the position-snapping issue: I was playing the browser version, and I haven’t compared it against a native build. I’ve wondered whether it might have been specific to that browser session or my setup rather than something that would happen across versions. I don’t have enough information to identify the cause, though. What I observed was that I would sometimes stop after walking for a while and then appear to snap backward several meters. Hopefully the browser context helps narrow it down.

And that’s useful context about the other ending. My reaction to the existential-horror side was based on the one I reached, so I can’t speak to how the other ending develops that idea.

I appreciate you taking the time to talk through the decisions behind it. The radar reversal was a thoughtful touch, and that ending music really did leave a strong impression!

What I Liked

- The optimization and overall performance of this game was absolutely PERFECT! I play most of these game jam games on a crappy school Chromebook, and literally every unity game (especially 3D ones) take 10+ minutes to load, but this one loaded in less than a minute!
- The art style is also amazing, I love pixel art, ESPECIALLY when it’s translated into a 3D environment!
- The lighting and detail was really good, again, crappy school Chromebook rendered this game beautifully.

What I Disliked

- I noticed a bug, if so, the hogs would just kinda clip through the center of the map, meaning if unlucky, they would keep going back and fourth and it would take 10+ minutes just to kill one hog
- There is a small inconsistency with the art style, not the biggest issues (like the shelf at the end of my game) but the trees were so beautiful, and the hogs were a little lacking, even though I still love the graphics.
- It was a little hard to tell what’s going on, the text helped a bit but at the end I couldn’t see what was attacking me, and I kinda just died confused (funny end screen though)

Overall, I love this game. I think that the story is pretty funny, just your stereotypical horror moron ignoring all clear and very obvious clues that the thing they are doing is stupid and dangerous. I do say I think the game could use some small bug fixing and touch ups, but even then it’s still runs really good, and I wouldn’t be surprised if you got top 3! I’m rooting for you dude!

Firstly- big thanks for playing the game to the end! I was afraid I made the last boss fight too easy, but it turns out it was NOT the case, and barely anyone saw a good ending.

It's nice to be noticed for optimization! It's kinda something that's important in my main job, so I guess I carried it over to my jam projects.

I noticed this bug after release. For whatever reason the walkmesh got built ignoring some stuff, and I didn't notice it earlier.

The art style was something I was aware of, but the first and second levels use the same terrain, and I couldn't swap out the low and high fidelity models easily (the detailed trees were supposed to be in the final fight). In the end I figured the pixelation was enough. The RIGHT solution was to use a different terrain in the final fight, because you barely see it in the dark :)

I'm glad you enjoyed the story! I wanted to use the old tropes about a main character breaking some a rule and suffering the consequences. Being defeated by the REALITY HOG is one of two endings. The other one... goes in a different direction :)

Once again- thanks for playing and detailed review!

The background story behind your game is realy cool. Didnt realy captured the hallowen theme but i can fell the passion behind it. I personaly find the game way to slow and hard to undertand if what im doing realy matters in the end, i was just walking around trying shoting the boar and nothing realy happened. Maybe some feed back would be nice. And something else happening in the game like you going to your car or cabin to re-stock bullets, put traps... something to make it more engaging

Developer

Thanks for playing!

The game goes more horror-y after you hunt 5 boars. The secret is to keep them at the distance (over 25 meters). Then... well, something happens.

Also- boars die in one hit, so I'd say there is some feedback :)

soo i realy missed all my shots lol. But that is what im talking about, maybe a bullet trail, so you can know you missed. The guy say something like, danm i missed.

Hey kkcn, the sound design was the highlight for me! A little more guidance during the hunt could help players find their feet. Interesting idea mixing boar hunting with horror.

If you get a chance to try A Borrowed Shadow, we’d love your honest feedback and a rating. It’s our first jam, so we’re keen to learn. Good luck!

Developer

Thanks for playing!

I think I made the game a bit too hard. No one writes about the ending, and that's where the horror part starts :)

Loved it, really had me focused in it!

Great game! Definetly made me rage after not being able to shoot that shit for the 10th time

What you could definetly add is
1. More hogs, i only see 1 hog at a time

2. hogs come out in the open, I gotta go to dark corners to find that little bastard

3.Sprinting and jumping and crouching

Developer

Thanks for playing!

Keep the hogs at more than 25 meters and shoot them from the distance. After hinting five there's... a further development.

As for the movement options- I had jumping, but I decided it didn't fit the game.

Submitted

I couldnt climb the hills without jumping lol and also It might just be my eye sight but i couldn't see a hog at all unless i got really close to it

Submitted

this game was awesome and i really enjoyed that i didn't have to take it seriously at all, i loved the art style even tho it was very simple it made me realize that to have a good game jam game the art can look like it was put together in 96 hours. i noticed a glitch where if you shoot an already died hog it plays the message again idk if that was intentional.

Developer

Thanks for playing!

Didn't know about the bug, definitely not intentional! As for the graphics, I used some assets I owned for a while, and the pixelated effect can be done in 5 minutes. As for the ending graphics- I have a guy for that :)

Hey kkcn! I actually played quite a few hunting simulators, but yours is definitely the hardest I've tried so far :D Those darn REALITY HOGS!

Pretty fun little game. The gameplay felt pretty good. The hunting felt a bit stretched because I didn't manage to catch that little slippery *****! No clue how to beat the hog at night, i didnt see anything really.

The sound was good, can't rate it at night because im scared by the spooks so i turn off the sound and listen to cats meowing instead.

All in all - great entry!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Little hogs run away if you approach closer than 25 meters if you shoot them from distance, it's all good :)

For the night hunt, you need to listen to the sound and look for the glowing eyes. If you manage to win you'll get one ending, but if you lose... well, you get a different one! It's Halloween and endings are like candy- everyone gets one!
