If I had a nickel for every time I found a rhythm game on this jam... You know the rest.
Gameplay is quite unorthodox for a rhythm game. Normally you press your keyboard like DDR, but when you're close to reeling in the fish (as indicated on the bottom) you mash A to finish the deal. For some fish you have to do it more than once. While unique gameplay is always a plus this comes with an issue where you miss out on the rest of the music.
Mash input for the reel-in phase of the Bass-off could have been more clear. Not everyone reads the instruction manual. I kept losing to the first fish without really knowing why and turns out I had to mash when that big A appears on the screen. I thought I had to time the press when the circle closes in.

The lack of transition between scenes and phases kinda makes everything feel abrupt. I ended up missing parts of the note because there's no downtime for when the mashing phase ends and you're sent back to the ddr phase. Also ended up missing the last piece of dialogue because I was still mashing A after catching the King Bass (I think that's what it's called)...

Very awesome, quite the eye-catching entry for sure!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for checking out the game - and for the detailed feedback!

I agree the mash A input could have been more clear. I'm just not sure how to do that besides literally writing 'MASH A!' on the screen...

The last piece of dialogue just said 'Thanks for playing!' - so, uh, thanks for playing!

OK I love bass guitar and the concept of a "bass off". Audio wise, it has me wondering if it's possible to implement within the Game Boy audio limitations. I think maybe, by using wave channel via sample playback or with some kind of initial pitch sweep to create a "pick" transient. LSDJ has all kinds of wave channel tools that could potentially shape it into a bass guitar, probably involving the low pass filter. Some of the drums/hats sound lightly bitcrushed, and LSDJ is definitely capable of reproducing something close to how these sound.

Rhythm game is pretty fun, gets decently challenging by the end. And I'm sure game jam time limitations played a role, but I wonder would it have been more fun if it followed the syncopation of the music (pretty much just in the final stage). I played twice, first time just followed the visuals and second time I instinctively tried to input with the syncopation. What do you think? I can see reasons for and against.

It's possible to cheese by spamming directional inputs, since there's no penalty for wrong inputs. No big deal in a game jam. Maybe that can help someone who wants to see the ending but isn't great at rhythm games.

I LOVE the sprite art. There's so much personality. Restrained use of dithering worked well.

Like someone else, I also mashed my way past the ending screen message, so I played again to check it out. Might've been cool if the guarded treasure was a memento or message from Dad.

All in all, a great jam game. Pun unavoidable.

Developer(+1)

You can definitely create an imitation of it! Waveforms is generally used for guitars as you say and the noise channel was obviously great for drums. It never ends up with the same fidelity mind you - that would be a lot to ask! Personally I just didn't have the time to translate it (I find composition is much quicker live!).

Yeah I hear you on the syncopation! I could definitely have gone that way. In the end I decided to largely focus on making key patterns that are visually easy to grasp and satisfying shapes to play. I think with a longer game and more sessions you'd lean more into a musical approach since the player is learning as they go. That approach would definitely make it more fun for a musician - but maybe less accessible for a shorter game?

Yeah that's precisely why I left the spam option there (it also made it easy easier to test!). Rhythm games aren't everyone's cup of tea.

Thank you for noticing the dithering! I took a minute to find the right balance but I'm pretty happy with how it came together.

Ah that would have been a cool ending. But then again, Dad never caught it! I had hoped to make the ending have some kind of unspoken catharsis - I tried to capture the feeling of finding a belated connection with a parent's misunderstood dream after they'd passed.

Thanks a bunch for playing - and for the detailed feedback! I'm glad you enjoyed it enough to play twice ❤️

It is very polished! Love it! Though the rythm part seems a bit unresponsive. Great job!

Developer

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. What did you find unresponsive about the rhythm game? Yours is the first feedback to mention this so I'm keen to understand what you're experiencing!

Submitted(+1)

for some reason i feel like when i press a button the rythm thing activates with a delay(maybe that is just me tho). From what i have noticed the game does not show that you did something if you did it on the empty "square", i think that should be changed(cuz i get lost sometimes, but that's just me)

Developer

I did wrestle a lot with that timing - it's probably just the animation throwing you off. The effect of pressing each button is instant, but the 'peak' of the actual animation is a couple of frames in. You'd have to have a keen eye for detail to notice but there you go! Perhaps something to consider in future animation designs for a UI like this.

That's a great idea about the frames showing something when they're pressed with no notes. This would also make it more clear for people less familiar with the DDR layout - which there have been a couple of feedback points on. Do you think that should also count as a miss and therefore cause the fish to drop further away? Or is it better just as an indication of which key you've pressed?

Submitted(+1)

i think it will be great as just an indication, yeah

Developer

Also thanks a lot for explaining your feedback further!

I absolutely love this! Looks and sounds very polished, and the theme interpretation is great. Marvelous!

Developer

Thanks so much for having a jam! I'm glad you enjoyed it 🎶

Yeah! I love it :) Slap the bass! Thank you - great game!

Developer

Thanks for slappin'! 🤙 Glad you had fun!

I am absolutely the worst at this kind of games, couldn’t even beat the first fist. Brain just gets overloaded way to much. Although I dig the music, I’m pretty sure you cannot get such clean sounds for the gameboy.

Graphics wise the game looks love, has an awesome style to it. Music is lovely and the theme interpretation and the idea are quite unique! Well done!

Developer

Thanks for giving it a swing even though it's not your sort of game! Sorry you found it such a challenge. Rhythm games definitely aren't for everyone.

I'm especially grateful for the graphics feedback - your submission was a slam dunk in that department so your liking it carries a lot of weight!

Great sound and visuals. An interesting idea to catch fish by playing bass. I found I could just mash the direction buttons without penalty hehe.

Developer

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yeah I discovered that bug towards the end of the jam - I guess have fun jamming out at high speed 🤟

it's rare to see a rhythm game in a game jam, and even rarer to see one that works well like this! it would have been nice to have sound effects play on the arrow key presses for some extra feedback on perfect, hit or miss, but appreciate that could be a bit of a pain to balance with the music at the same time.  i really like the art in this, and the music was mixed cleanly so it was easy to catch the beat. the html version worked for me sync-wise, and the layout was clear as well, so it felt like everything lined up in that respect!

Developer

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Music being a jam's main focus is new for me so it's nice to see it's been received so well.

Thanks for the positive feedback on sync and layout!

Has a unique quirky setting and tone set right away and kept throughout. Music is top notch. And the animation is great too.
I'm curious if you tried to do anything with the music/sound like the gameboy does? (I'm not sure, like limited audio channels, sampling frequency?)

Developer

Thanks, I'm glad you liked the vibe! As for the audio - I guess it does so happen to be all 4-channels (like the GameBoy), but that's about as far as the similarities go... The true limitations of the GB restrict it to waveforms and white noise. You could try and emulate the arrangement (white noise for drums and waves for guitars) but by the time you were done it would sound very different to this. I'm a bassist/guitarist so for these tracks I composed and recorded them in Ableton - plugged in a real guitar, programmed some drums, and sprinkled with the odd MIDI when it felt right (like in the garden eel's song)

Submitted(+1)

I really liked the game. Although, due to the limited number of buttons on the GB it was very confusing to me to play, I'd love to play with a more "Guitar hero" approach, or at least 4 keys in order. Not the fault of the game of course, just the limitations of the jam. Good thing, failing your strokes did not punish you, so I could just mash all keys around the same time in the difficult parts.

Graphics and music are 10/10, would recommend!

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you enjoyed the graphics and music so much! These are definitely my stronger areas.

As a Guitar Hero veteran I agree the buttons can be kind of jarring with arrow keys - but this seems to be the standard layout for arrow-based rhythm games like DDR (I did a bit of research!).  I hope at least those gamers will find it intuitive...  I did try to make it quite forgiving so I'm glad that helped - there's nothing worse than a rhythm game you can't keep up with 🎶

Submitted(+1)

As a guitar player, this game made me want to get a bass someday lol

Developer

Careful, this sounds like you're planning to challenge the Bass King!

Honestly implementing a musical game for this game jam was a genius move. I really loved the music integration, the art was beautiful, I really enjoyed over all. Great Job

Developer

Thanks so much! I've wanted to try my hand at a rhythm game for a while and this jam felt like the time. I'm glad you had a great time with it!

There is something 'fishy' about the jokes, but I had nothing but trouble trying to play it.  the arrows were out just that little bit out of synch with the music when I tried to play.  the A thing at the end made absolutely no sense to me and I forever remained stuck at the beginning.

More information on how to play this might be a good idea, but I'll still praise you for the effort.  It is clearly there!

Developer(+1)

Hey thanks for the feedback! The html version is probably a little dependent on your device and connection so maybe the notes don't sync up so reliably. I tried to make the hit range fairly forgiving but I'm sorry it gave you such a hard time 😥

You have to mash A during the second phase (giant A button). You're not the first to flag that though so there must be some clearer telegraphing I could do...

Thanks for giving it a go anyway!

Submitted(+2)

I love the "bass" pun, the start screen is already a banger. Also I really like the font you chose, can I ask which one it is ?

Small detail, but you can bind controls to physical keys so that WASD becomes ZQSD for AZERTY keyboards (It's ok I played with the arrow keys).

I didn't get you had to mash A several times once you reeled the fish. But the minigame art is banger too ! However the idea to keep the level from the first mashing into the second one is great !

At the end I think I couldn't get the last dialog (it was skipped) because I was mashing A.

Excellent game ! You should really add a thumbnail because you game is worth the detour but with no thumbnail you will get less reviews than you deserve

Developer(+2)

Thanks so much for playing! I'm honestly surprised you found it with the current state of the page - I'll be updating that as soon as I find the time. Needed a little break after pushing right up to the submission deadline... 🫣

I'm not sure how to bind to physical keys on Gamemaker, I didn't know this was a thing. I'll have to do some research for the future. It's unfortunate Z is a standard A button or I could just hard code the additional letters!

Yeah the telegraphing between the minigame phases isn't my favorite, it was a last minute simplification... I had originally built the second phase as a central box with arrow keys coming in from all sides - but in playtesting this change felt a little too complex to understand quickly. Maybe I should add a big 'MASH A!' graphic or something.

The font is one I made custom for this jam. It's actually my first time making a font so I'm glad you liked it! I guess I can upload the png if you'd want to use it.

That's a good 'catch' about the final text box - it only said 'Thanks for playing!' ... So I guess: thanks for playing!

I will update the page to be nicer soon! I'm stoked you still made this little back lakes fishing detour, you're a real one 🤝

Submitted(+1)

Good luck ! And well done for the font ! For the controls, I just checked and it doesn't exist by default on Gamemaker (there are libraries for it though if you really wanted).

Developer(+1)

Thanks! And that's unfortunate - maybe the best solution is custom button mapping... that feels possibly a little extra for a jam though 🫣
