Charming fishing game. The art is excellent, and I liked the little strategy around what to sell, keep, or turn into bait.

The button mashing got a little rough, I’d probably like a different reeling mechanic or a bit more feedback there.

Otherwise, really polished. Great Game Boy look, cute characters, and a satisfying gameplay loop.
I really liked being able to play this on hardware. The design of Petra's shop is great!

Developer

thanks so much!! it looks so cool on the gameboy advance! i would love to play it on mine at some point, i gotta figure out how to do that :D

i'm actually working on an update for the game right now to add more content. there's gonna be new music, a second rival to choose and all the fish will get illustrations that'll replace the silhouettes. and i wanna make the fishing minigame more fun, that's a big priority!

Submitted(+1)

Awesome! I've given you a follow to watch for the update!

As for playing on GBA I'm using an EZ flash which lets you read roms off of a micro SD.

As a person who has no interest in fishing this game was a bit lackluster for me ^^"
I did enjoy the art and sound as well as the idea to try and get better gear over time.
Sadly the fishing was very repetitive so I kinda stopped at day 2.
God job anyway :)

Developer(+1)

thanks for trying it anyway! i'll try to improve on that.

I always love a fishing game, and this was no exception! I liked how the annoying neighbor reacts each day to what you keep, and it seems like there’s some pretty neat depth to the strategy for for what you sell vs bait vs keep, and what you purchase at the shop. My biggest notes are: the music feels a little too somber for the game, and more pondering that calming, if that makes sense; and the mashing mechanic is a bit torturous on my poor old man hands. It might be more bearable if there was a bar or something to really show how much mashing is left to real in the fish? I know the mechanics have depth, but I think some of it needs a bit more player feedback to keep the player willing to push their hands, if that makes sense.

Developer

thanks for playing! :) yea, i would really like to improve my music making skills to set the right mood. i've only ever made music for this game and the one i made before it, outside of that i have absolutely no experience so i have a lot to learn. i definitely want to improve!

the button mashing for the fishing is also the point i think needs the most improvement to be actually fun and as you point out, it's also an accessibility issue. i originally tried to make the animation more responsive, showing animation states based on how far the player got, but that made the animation laggy and i didn't want to obsess over it to make it perfect because otherwise i wouldn't have finished a game in time for the jam.

i'm planning to make a post-jam update to this game. thanks for the thorough feedback!

I didn't win first place, but who needs infinite wealth when you can point and laugh at your annoying neighbour?

My biggest fish was a 9-star sturgeon. Took me by surprise because I've only been getting perch and bass until then.

Had a decent amount of fun but my fingerprint was starting to fall off by the third day. Solid entry!

Developer

thanks for playing, im glad you had a good time! :) there are actually 3 endings, but i personally enjoy the one you got a lot. and yea, for the bigger fish you have to mash hard so i get that it can become straining. like reeling in a big fish :D thanks for the comment

a really cozy game with harmonizing visuals and bop music also simple but addictive playing loop. Job well done! one thing got me stuck at first was it said press A to reel it in and i was using keyboard but in keyboard it is z for anything even if it says A but i quickly got over it and enjoyed the game

Developer

thanks for playing and the nice comment!

yea i think what you're saying about the button prompt is fair enough, i think it might be understandable though since this is emulating gameboy controls. not sure if there would be an easy fix that isn't a somewhat awkward "mash the a / z button" line 🤔

The visuals are really charming and the whole presentation feels very polished.

The pacing was a little too relaxed for my personal taste, so I didn’t stick with it for very long, but I can definitely see the care that went into the atmosphere and presentation. Really nice work overall!

Developer

thank you for playing and the honest review! can you tell me what you mean by relaxed pacing? :) too much dialogue or something else? not enough action gameplay? i'd like to learn from this and improve.

Submitted(+1)

The dialogue itself was fine! It gives some context and never felt too long.

What slowed things down for me was having to confirm almost every little action: buying bait, choosing a spot, using the bait, selling the fish, taking the blessing, leaving, and so on. After a while it felt like there were a lot of extra steps between me and the actual gameplay.

Then, once I was fishing, the main interaction was basically pressing A repeatedly to catch the fish. Since that's the main active part of the game across all three days, it didn't feel very exciting to me personally.

So I think reducing some of those confirmations and giving the fishing itself a bit more interaction or variety would probably help the pacing a lot. :)

Developer

thanks for taking the time to write this thorough reply! this is super helpful for coming up with more fun game mechanics :) i'll keep it in mind for updates!

Nice game!

The gameplay loop is kinda cool. The pixel art and music are really great!!

Had a good time playing it. Congrats!!!

Developer(+1)

thanks so much! i'm glad you enjoyed playing my game x)

Amazing art!! I played on stream today (recording here) and kept playing until I won, but reading the comments now it looks like I missed one of the endings. I had a great time with it, it was fun thinking up strategies and planning ahead to ensure I was able to get a good fish on the third day.

Developer (1 edit)

woah thanks for playing my game on stream, i'm excited to watch that! i'm happy you enjoyed your time with my game. there are 3 possible endings to get :)

Awesome game, I am a little sad there were no sound effects, but very impressive game for a jam, loved the use of dithering on the backgrounds

Developer(+1)

thank you! music is unfortunately what i got to last for the project and i've never made sound effects, but i'm curious to learn and might add some in an update at some point!

Submitted(+1)

Awesome! if you can I recommend using Fx Hammer which is a rom that you can run on any gameboy emulator, the sav file created by the rom can actually be saved on the sound folder in gbstudio and it will play the sounds!

https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=17337

So fxhammer zip is inside the the bigger zip

There is a handy video tutorial from a few years ago that actually covers this, I ended up making the sounds on my gbjam game by toying around with it

Developer(+1)

woah thanks so much for the recommendation! i'll definitely check this out

Billiammmmm! The art is elite, and had the perfect gameboy feel. Love it!

Developer

thank you!

Submitted(+1)

I have no idea if i got a secret ending or if that's the normal ending, but anyway that was epic. Im 99.99% sure that the fish i pulled out of that lake was bigger than Billiams though, whos talking now, huh? I just wished there was more music some parts of the game were just silent. Really cool game and if that really was an alternative ending, bonus points for that its always really impressive to me if jam games have more than one ending/secrets!

Developer(+1)

sounds to me like you got the hardest ending :) there are 3 endings in total. thanks for playing and glad you enjoyed it! i'm considering adding more music after the jam voting is over. music just isn't my area so i didn't get to making more than 1 track in time.

I was so sure I'd win against Bill with my 7-star salmon, but I was so defeated when I lost :( Got my Sturgeon the second time around and ended up beating Bill and it was so worth it!

Developer

thank you! i'm glad you enjoyed my game enough to play it twice :) good job winning against bill!

(+1)

Woo!! Beating Bill is the sweetest victory of all. Graphics are fantastic, love the character designs. Music was so retro, felt right at home in a gameboy title.

Developer

thanks, i'm happy you liked it! music actually isn't my area so it's nice to hear you enjoyed it :)
