I LOVE until then and look back so so much, and to see something inspired by those two media come to life really made me happy. I loved the story, the visuals, and the message behind the game. Being too absorbed into something can really take away from things. Very realistic, honestly. I loved it! Very good game!!

Developer

Thanks sl much for all the compliments! Loved your submission as well great job on it, I love the art style.

Really cool story and nice presentation. Didn't care much for the music though and what exactly does it mean that you used LLM tooling on the coding? Not that that takes away from the other aspects of the game, but doesn't that kind of go against the spirit of the jam?

Developer

Yeah so, in prior comfy jams (not this one) we DID allow AI generated code, so I joined this jan thinking that was still the case and then about 2/3 through the jam I noticed the wording has changed for it. I contacted Macrow asking whether or not I can still submit my game and he gave me the most Macrow response: a chill reaction. (see bottom of the description of the gane)

As for the learning argument that comes with having AI write code for you, I have been writing code myself in godot for 4 years now and that’s not about to stop. I can understand all the code it generated because I told it how it should work.

As for what I mean when I say that I used AI coding assistance and LLM tooling, WHICH BTW I NEVER REALLY WANNA USE I JUST HAD A LOT LESS TIME IN THIS JAM THAN I HOPED (life happens) I used a mix between describing what I want each script to do functionally in a chat interface as well as occasionally switching to a coding agent to implement large amounts of small scripts. For example I had a list of scene specific behavior, but my game has 10+ scene’s in it so making each specific behavior by hand would unfortunately not have been feasible with how little time I actually had to spend on the game :(

Listen I love to put this here whenever I discuss AI: I wish AI never existed. If I could make none of this ever happen I would. But it is here to stay and I don’t want to fall behind, so Ill begruently use it.

Okay, fair enough. Just wondering.

The game feels seamless and the story has some weight to it. It's just enough for players to sink their teeth into and leave them with something to think about.

I'm sure many game devs and participants of this jam, such as myself, can relate to Rowan. Some of us are trying something out for the first time while others have spent years perfecting their craft. Neglecting other areas of life, relationships for example, is a real concern. While it's impressive that everything was done by a solo dev, I'm also left wondering what could be accomplished if a team of artists, musicians, etc. was brought on board. The art was effective and well done, but I felt there would be greater impact from a more refined visual style or certain details like seeing the character art for Rowan change as they grow older. But what is there is more than enough for a jam game: a thoughtful story, three unique areas with parallaxing art, dialogue choices, a drawing mini game, and special shoutout to the cool transition between the credits and the main menu. Awesome work on this!

Thank you so much for leaving this comment!

I agree that if I’d had a team working on this game, it probably would’ve been a LOT better.

But then again, this game is kind of a mega-benchmark for what I can achieve on my own. I’m actually a lot like Rowan in that I’m CONSTANTLY grinding and trying to improve my skills. (It’s hard to improve at art music and writing if you have teammates that do that all for you!)

Oh just fyi I was considering doing a post-jam verison where I do some minor adjustments on when audio tracks play and stuff like that but idk if it’s worth doing.

Thanks for playing and typing out such a nice comment!

That’s a cute story! A bit sad that we didn’t get more opportunities to express ourself by drawing prompts! A bit more of those would’ve even help the story to gameplay ratio feel more balanced. here is my comic panel šŸ‘Œ

what a cool jam entry, gg!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for enjoying also your drawing is PEAK! The thing I tried doing was like in the beginning of the game Rowan is free and draws anything just for fun. Then later as he focuses on improving and over-working he just draws shapes with accuracy tests.

Either way I Totally should’ve added one freestyle drawing at the end that would’ve been great

The intent came through, and that’s good narration through gameplay! But it felt like you were scared to ā€œinterruptā€ us with gameplay, when you could’ve totally put several more drawing prompt all way through, free in the beginning, and accuracy in the second part! For exemple in the ā€œdid more competitionsā€ skip, I was a little sad that I didnt get to draw a bunch of drawings for the occasion xD I would’ve loved see like 4-5 free drawings and ~9 accuracy test figure in the end credits! (that recap was suuuuch a fun touch by the way, chef kiss šŸ§‘ā€šŸ³šŸ‘Œ) But as I said it is a really cool jam entry, super original and it feels such like a personal project, I genuinly love those šŸ‘Œ

Thanks a bunch! This is such good feedback, Like yeah I was a bit scared to have too many drawing sections, in an older build of the game I had like WAAAY too many drawing exercises so I toned that down for the final build. But unfortunatley I only asked the player to draw freestyle when it was part of the necessary story šŸ’€.

I DEFINETLY put all my focus this entry into making the best story because, I had a personal story I wanted to tell. In doing this though I feel like I definetly did neglect the actual gameplay a bit and I agree I could have totally have doubled the free style drawing sessions, especially with how much everyone enjoyed them. If I just had the creative ā€œdraw this thingā€ prompts It couldve been a lot more fun. Once again thanks for the feedback and appreciating my game, I love seeing other people enjoy the stories and experiences I put together 🫰

This was such a cute game. I LOVED the drawing pad, what an awesome touch! The art is fantastic, really immersive. Great job overall! Featuring my mouse drawing of the second-last panel haha!

Only thing that would have been nice is an undo or erase feature! Had to commit to my silliness! XD

Developer(+1)

First off, Thanks for playing! Second off, Thanks for sharing your doodle, I love seeing what everyone drew. And also thank you for the compliments!

As for the drawing minigame, I did have an undo system in at one point but I felt like that motivate perfectionism which at least in the first half of the game when he’s young, I didn’t want.

Thank you for yoru silliness !

Wow! The artwork was incredible, and the story and lighting effects really brought everything to life. You can tell how much care and effort went into this. Such an impressive game, very well done!

Developer

Thank you for appreciating the game and it’s art as well as enjoying the story!

Optional art rant: I have bc NEVER been good at art so over the years I’ve gotten really good at programmer art: Take bad wuick to make art then slap some shaders and post processing on it. This game though I actually tried making good art and then applied my dev art and I think the results speak for themselves.

Once again thank you for playing my game, it was really stressful and fun to make!

Wow, nice work on the visuals with the lighting and parallax and such! Having the little drawing pad moments in the game was a cool touch!

Developer(+1)

Thanks For playing and the compliments!

It’s been so fun seeing what my players draw in each of these freestyle sections so thank you for sending your doodle! I LOVE IT!

Whoah there's so much effort put into this. The animations, the parallaxing, the godrays / post processing. The music starts off strong but gets super annoying quick.

Developer

Thanks so much for playing!

I’m new to composing music so I know I got a long way to go but if you could please give me some feedback on what was annoying with it? Like did I just use the same track for too long? Maybe places where I just needed to use more silence instead?

Once again thanks for playing and enjoying the game! It means a lot to me when people appreciate my work :)

Submitted(+1)

It gets quite repetitive and the sound choice is not the best imo. But it's a little hard to explain or pinpoint

Developer

thank you!
