Description
Genre: Retro, Fantasy (is that a genre)
What kind of game: ngl I scrapped my previous concept and started over from scratch at the last minute so I don't know
What each track represents: Track 1 would be an early game area or possibly town theme, track 2 is a battle theme, and track 3 is an intense theme for an endgame area
How did you compose: I just took whatever ideas popped into my head and elaborated on them. Also just whatever I could think to take inspiration from
DAW: FL Studio

Message from the artist
This was an interesting one for sure. Uni already made it difficult to find time to work on this, and then at the last minute I realized that I wasn't actually enjoying what I was working on so I decided to pivot. I think certain things (especially the mix and some section transitions) probably turned out kinda rough as a result, but I'm pretty happy with it overall.

I really enjoy the chord progressions you used! My favorite is Verdant Melody as it is really well written. I also enjoyed Four Winds, but sometimes it felt like there were a bit too many ideas.

I think that you might enjoy listening to Eastern Cemetery from Shaman King - Master of Spirits, if you haven't already :)

i played Chip N' Dale Rescue Rangers while listening and it became Nier Automata

Oh man, the GBA Celtic vibes are awesome! I love the soundfonts you chose, and the groove is very open, like in that first track. The little harmonic development in the middle is nice as well. Great groove with the upbeatness in track 2, and I love some of the modal mixture and key changes you've got going on. I think I heard a flat2 chord? Love the heaviness in that piano and the groove push with the 5/4 in track 3; it truly has a sense of finality to it, with stakes. The GBA retro design in terms of the groove, chords, and sound design (some arpeggios I heard in track 3, for example) is done really nicely! Not much of a criticism, but a suggestion: maybe have new sections (a bridge, for example), like a more spatial groove section in track 3, to add more depth and emotion. The melodic contour can use some variation, but I understand these tracks are also on the shorter side. All in all, absolute bangers. I would not be surprised to hear this in a Touhou game (maybe just with an added trumpet LOL).

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! To be honest, I think I added the melodic section of track 3 within like the last hour or so and I wish I could have developed it better than just key-changing up a half step......... Also you're the first person to catch the blatant Touhou inspiration congrats

I love the retro theme and use of soundfonts here! Tbh I kinda had a similar experience where I didn't really like my game idea or music, so I decided to scrap everything and just focus on making something I had fun with. I'm glad you were able to come up with something you were happy with, and I'm glad I came across it and gave it a listen. Great submission!

I adore the soundfont sounds. They are just so nostalgic feeling despite being born after those were the most prevalent. I still played a lot of games with them and they are some of my favorites.

Every song was a banger.

Can I ask where you got the picture for the entry from?

awesome soundtrack!!

This soundtrack is brilliant, with composition and orchestration choices that maintain interest throughout by constantly moving.

Verdant Melody - Great choice of instrumentation. Simple but effective cycle 5 progression in the B section and a smooth modulation that leads back into the A section. I really like that you included this track because it adds variety, depth, and thematic relevance to the soundtrack overall.

Four Winds - I love the melodic section from 0:34-1:20, especially when juxtaposed in between the sections with the metal riff. Great drum writing too.

Precipice of Forgotten Heaven - Really cool and natural use of 5/4 with great chord choices.

Awesome work—one of my favorites so far!

thank you! i love modulating to somewhere completely random and then accidentally finding a smooth way to transition back to the original key

Verdant Melody: The use of the Dorian mode alongside the panflutes, dulcimer, and hand drums create an old growth type of sound. This feels like it was taken straight out of a Pokemon or Zelda Nintendo DS game. This one does an excellent job setting a clear scene for the location of your game and I think is my favorite of the three!

Four Winds: Another track that sounds like it has been polished and published in an actual game! I think the highlights that stuck out as particularly well done in this track are the bass line and the background sparkly bell arpeggios that add so much to the overall degree of polish.

Precipice of Forgotten Heaven: The rhythm and percussion stood out as particularly effective to me in this one. I also really love the background string-like elements that kind of soar and glide up and down in the background.

I think you are very wise to follow your artistic instincts to the places that bring you most joy. The big picture of why we are all here is for the love of music creation, and I am so happy that you ultimately found that! And the result is great! Great work and thank you so much for sharing your music!

oh yeah hello toby fox

(jokes aside, I really dig the old-timey vgm music vibes from this!!! I think the mixing could be a liiittle better at times but otherwise its great. much love!!!)

So solid. I really enjoyed the SNES sound palette and I think you nail all the themes with strong compositions to back them up. I feel like the final track has Megaman X vibes, which I really appreciate. I am curious what do you use to create those instruments? Thanks for the submission, so good!

Developer

thank you!! pretty much everything here is soundfonts, mostly from around the SNES and GBA era. this time around, i used the Mother 3 and Chrono Trigger soundfonts a lot

Submitted

Ahh! is that sitar on Verdant Melody coming for the Zeal Theme on Chrono Trigger?

Developer(+1)

tbh i don't know if i've ever heard the full Chrono Trigger OST, just certain songs (i guess you can consider me a soundfont larper in that sense lol) but you've just reminded me that i absolutely should at some point. what you're hearing is probably a dulcimer from the Mother 3 soundfont

Very cool OST ! Interesting blend of electronic percs with fantasy melodies. My favorite track was Four Winds. I really liked the many cool sections, especially the gliding synth melody starting at 0:34.

Overall, I appreciated the fact that it wasn't feeling repetitive because you were really good at developping your themes and adding variations to them.

Good job !

AWESOME, PEAK, LOVELY

  • "Verdant Melody" is so sweet and fun; I can sense the influence of certain games, though I couldn't quite put my finger on which ones. By the way, I love the choir creating that angelic, ethereal effect beneath such a lively melody.
  • "Four Winds"—the choice of sounds is so striking: a bit ethnic, a bit retro-video game, and full of energy.
  • "Precipice of Forgotten Heaven" — I am climbing to the top of the world to change the destiny of this story RAHHH
    • It has such a beautiful sounds; I’m in love with those harps—a delightful song.
Developer(+1)

thank you so much!!! Verdant Melody kind of reminded me of Dragon Roost Island as i was creating it, and the choir is straight out of Chrono Trigger
