Very cool game the concept is so good. If you have a second, I’d super appreciate a rating back on my game The Last Light

I like the idea of a time based card game, but I feel like the timer gives me more anxiety rather than adds to the excitability of the gameplay! I can see some people enjoying the fast pace of the cards, but I was struggling to read what they did in the timeframe. I guess you can read the cards ahead of time. Maybe there could be a mode where there's no timer and you can learn what each of the cards to so that when you head into actual fights, you can execute the combos!

Developer

Thanks for playing!

As for the timer, we tried to make it less stressful by making 1 in-game second last 1.5 real-life seconds. We also show all of the cards before the fights, so players can take as much time as they want to read the effects, costs, and think about combos before starting.

For experimenting, we tried to make a pause menu with a restart button so you don't waste time but we couldn't due to time pressure.
That said, we appreciate the feedback, a practice mode without the timer is an interesting idea, and we'll keep it in mind. Thanks again for playing!

Great job! The game has a solid foundation and a fun gameplay loop, with lots of nice polish throughout. One small suggestion: it would be great if hovered cards could expand beyond the deck instead of being clipped.

Apart from that, though, it really is a well-made game, especially considering the short timeframe.

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for playing! Yes I agree, I should've made it at least go up to make the description visible..

Pretty fun card battle game.  I made it to the 3rd god. 🏛

Good job!

Nice job on this! You've got a really solid foundation and an engaging gameplay loop! I particularly liked some of the little effects & bits of polish you added everywhere.

Just a little bit of feedback for you: the scaling of the cards when you hover over them seemed to bound within the cards' shape. It would be cool if they were able to expand out of the deck itself. And also, I got the "you lose" and "you win" audio at the same time at the end of the first level.

Great job otherwise!

Our team had a really similar source of inspiration (Greek-themed deckbuilder), and it's so interesting to see such a different execution on that idea. Really fun to balance the health and time mechanics. I like that the enemies can steal the time you have left as well, so you really gotta react to their attacks

Very fun and fast paced deck builder. I love the art especially the Greek statues. Very dynamic and responsive interactions. The music and sound effects were awesome. Good amount of challenge. It felt really good when I finally beat the 3rd boss. I couldn't beat the 4th enemy. Small bug: the effects in combat would sometimes freeze and get stuck on the screen like critical hit popup.  But that's a small thing everything else was wonderful. Fantastic job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Glad you enjoyed it, for the critical hit popup and sometimes other popups, i spent some time trying to solve it, but i couldn't find the exact reason why it happens but I'm pretty sure that it's because the game sometimes doesn't give the animation enough time to finish (pacing issue)

Hello from Discord! I really enjoyed the game - the combination of combat and audio is amazing. This is a project with great ambitions after the jam, with a very cool idea. Since childhood, I have been interested in Greek themes, so the game captured me from the first minutes. I am sure that you will like our game, and I will be glad to know your opinion about it!

Developer

Thanks for playing! I think the Greek theme was the best fit for the combat, glad you liked it

Pretty neat! i think this is something hard to balance for sure, which is the use of time as a currency! There is this added pressure to make good decisions while keeping an eye on the clock!
maybe it would be good to have things like health and time be more connected so it keeps it far simpler? Because choosing to heal in the sake of losing time feels like a very hard call to make, because you'll lose if you run out of time or health, so perhaps if your health is simply just the time too, you can just use 'time/heal' cards with very little complication, but they are more rare to come by? or are single use and are removed from your deck so that is the cost of using them. Either way, great job on this, very ambitious... i should know hahah did something too ambitious as well lol.

Developer

Thanks for the review! Another comment suggested to remove the health bar too, it is an interesting idea worth experimenting with, but personally I think having them both is better as it gives more variance in enemies and cards, but it introduces the issue of balance, but i think with enough play testing and some math, there's probably a way to keep the game play and cards usage smooth and easy for the player

Cool game.  I got to the second character and I attached as much as I could, but still got game over.  I think I ran out of time, but wasn't sure how I could have done more damage with the cards I was delt.  Good flow though.  Good job.

Developer

Thanks for playing!

Well the winning strategy isn't about spamming attacks, cause attacks waste time, and time is IMPORTANT! So you should think about your next moves wisely,  and use other cards like the ones that give you more time...

Nice one! Great theme and the action is nice and frantic. I did struggle a bit to read the font, though.

loved the drawings (espacially the cursour hand)

feels a bit frantic for a card game, but its enjoyable

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing our game! We intentionally tried to capture the frantic feeling for our game. Glad you enjoyed!

Very fun game! I enjoyed everything about it. The gameplay, art, and music all complement each other very nicely.

One thing I would change is the card design. As it is, you either have to memorize how each card works or spend time reading the description during gameplay, which may even make you lose. For example, the card “Bloom” heals over three turns, but that isn’t clear from its visual design. You could add three small hearts icons to “Bloom” to show that it heals over three turns, so the effect is clear without needing to read the description.

Another point is that the final enemy feels much easier than the previous one. Also, the card “Odysseus” seems quite overpowered.

Developer

Your points are valid.. Thanks for the review!

This is a really cool concept with great presentation (the art, the music, the greek vibe, the fact that you're fighting statues, I love it). I enjoy the time pressure to play the cards.

Two points:

1. The cards need to be way more readable. I'm in a big hurry so I need to be able to tell what a card does at a glance. Compare this to the presentation of Hearthstone: a big blue mana gem in the corner of every card lets me immediately know how much it's going to cost vs this game has "Cost: x" written in small text on the card. Similarly, have an icon for "restores time", "deals damage" (rather than each card having a unique icon, you could throw that out and just have for example all cards that restore time have a timer icon; all cards that deal damage have a fist, etc).

2. Balance: I beat the whole game and honestly, health was never a concern, at all. Like the lowest I've ever been is 60/80. Therefore I don't care when the enemy is doing damage, I don't care about healing or block, the only precious resource is time and the only cards I want to play are time recovery and damage. Either health should be a bigger concern, or it could just be removed and enemy just damages your clock (more focused game).

Either way, these points don't detract from the fact that this is an awesome entry. Well done!

Edit: Also: I don't think Fate Loop (replay last card) works at all? It takes my time but it doesn't seem to do anything else.

Edit: I can't see my own block or the enemy's block displayed anywhere.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing our game and leaving such great feedback!

We are aware of the bug with the fate loop card and some other cards. We tried our best but time got the best of us. (Ironic isn't it?) Same goes with the layout and readability of the cards. We were so focused on getting all of the features to work (well, trying to) that weren't able to address that issue. If I could go back and fix one issue with the whole game it would probably be the readability.

As for the difficulty, we did the best balancing we could with the time given. While it might seem easy, especially if you pay attention to the gameplay,  making a game to hard definitely would have shot us in the foot. In our opinion it's better to have a game where everyone has a chance to win rather than one where no one can.

And on top of all of that, block not being displayed is honestly just an oversight on our end.

Thank you again for playing, enjoying, and thoroughly evaluating our game! It means the world to our whole team. We wish you the best!

Oh I definitely agree with leaning on the side of too easy. I get frustrated with "too hard" jam games, not being able to decide to keep playing to see it through, or give up early. I got a bit stuck on level 3 of yours, but once I figured out to just ignore healing and block, I was able to break through and the last two were not a problem. I definitely enjoy beating a game and seeing all of the content.

Btw I love the icons suggesting that we're fighting various Greek gods, I'm guessing those are the god of time, death, etc. It would be cool if it showed their names to give a bit more depth to their characters.

Submitted(+1)

The game's central conceit of being a time-based card game is honestly really awesome. It's simple, straight to the point, and is well-executed. Such jazzy music too! Don't know how well it fits the whole ancient Greek thing but hey I dig it. My main comment is that the card that is supposed to "repeat the last card" doesn't repeat the last card, so it kinda ends up wasting space and time. It makes the latter levels hard. Other than that, very very solid game. Good job team! Congrats on submitting for the jam, and I wish you all the best.

Developer

Thank you for playing our game and leaving feedback! There are a few bugs with the cards as we ran out of time while fixing them, but all is well that ends well.  Thanks again and best of luck to you as well!
