Man, I panicked and lost about 5 shots to the first ‘sleeper’ that I came across. The rising SFX when you’re about to wake one up is incredibly suspenseful. It is manageable enough to back up a bit and scan the horizon until you start hearing a second sleeper start to wake. Had a couple of those happen. Great horror experience.

Also, as an aside on the loon sounds: the wail is the most iconic one (looooooow hiiiiiigh low) but the one with lots of short bits ( low hi hi hi low ) is the one they use for predators. This bit of bird lore made those SFX extra stressful, haha.

Developer

Thank you for playing! Glad I was able to spook you a little 😁, I am so happy to hear that you liked it!

Thank you for the bird lore, I didn't know that! I wanted the iconic loon wail and by accident found their other sounds, glad it worked out nicely!

I love this game. The vibes are pristine, the forest and atmosphere are great for this kind of game and the diagetic map adds a big deal of immersion. The objective is fairly simple but might need a couple of tries to figure out how early you need to get back to camp and where the fuel sources are. The monsters design is fairly simple but used very well, the noises they make as you're exploring are fantastic but I wish they weren't dead giveaways of their location and instead were used just to spook the player a little bit to make them paranoid. Might be a fair bit too long of an experience for a jam showcase but one I'd love to fully play through in any other setting. Had a fantastic time with it!

nice concept it could use some polish

for me personally i couldn't survive even past one night i got easily destroyed i couldn't see them coming even after hearing them they were just too fast

overall it was a nice experience for a horror game and that's coming form a horror game fan so be proud you made a nice game :)

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thank you for playing! I'm glad to hear that you liked it! And thanks for the feedback!

I think the problem is that you played without headphones? The game has 3d sound which is very important to detect monsters from the distance and avoid them, also they hear your every move, so you have to be quiet when you hear them 💀. It is my mistake as a dev for not explaining that clearly, too many people were confused in the comments 😓

Submitted(+1)

I hate scary games, but I managed to play through this one (on first try).

+ The atmosphere is pretty good.

- The grass keeps clipping through the road.

+ The enemy sound design means you know from which direction they are comming from and have enough warning time

The map not showing your location is great. You have to figure it out by looking at the coordinates which takes time and would allow the monsters to sneak up on you. Sadly the enemies don't move on their own. Still increases the tention if you are running out of time and are lost.

And bor the bird that souns as a money sound effect gave me a heart attack. It was fine the first time but it just kept going and going and I was imagining some horific birdheaded monster right behind me. Well imagination is the greatest scare anyone can give you.

Also if running has no cost, just make it the default walking speed. I don't need to catch a carpal tunnel from your game >w<

Oh and the game was a bit laggy. Moving the mouse around felt a bit choppy

Developer

Thank you for playing! I appretiate you taking time and writing such detailed review, this is very valuable to me, thank you!

All your points are valid. Though I was surprised to hear that the bird sounds were that scary lmao 😂

Monsters are sleeping, they hear you and react to sounds, so running does have a cost, for some reason I assumed that to be obvious, but from what I see in the comments, almost nobody understood that... I guess I was struck by the curse of knowledge assumption..?)

But you still managed to beat it on the first try, congrats 😎

Submitted(+1)

With the running, I guess that makes sense...

I just asumed the monster agro was range/sight based. Not only because they obviously react to you when you get close, but also because that would be easiest to program :3

Nice concept

Thank you!

Very cool idea, making an open world horror game like this in 4 days is quite a task and you've done a good job!

Developer

Thank you for kind words, and thank you for playing :)

Great work ! I love the atmosphere and the world map, it was fun to have a navigation system that isn't an arrow to your goal for once (but the coordinates sytem make it not too difficult, I would have sucked at navigating only with the compass ahah) . They came for me in the middle of a day in broad daylight though, not sure why

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you! I am happy to hear that! Don't worry, you are not the only one who found it difficult to navigate with a compass. About them coming at you, you woke them up 💀, have to be quiet and listen for their audio cues. I should have made that more obvious, my bad!

Thank you for playing!

Submitted(+1)

I was pretty confused on how to play. I get that I'm supposed to siphon fuel from the cars & gas stations and take it back to my base before nightfall so I can power my generator. But I keep randomly getting attacked by monsters in the middle of the day? And I'm not sure what the point of the shotgun is if I'm never able to see the monster before I'm attacked.

The atmosphere is very cool, though!

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you for your feedback!
I see how that can be confusing, the problem is probably that you played without headphones, because the 3d sound is VERY important to detect enemies and where they are, and not only that, you can also hear their "alertness level", and if they get too angry you should stay quiet until they calm down. Thats definetly my bad for not making that more obvious, so your criticism is totaly valid!

Thank you for playing!

Hey so I've just seen the game screenshots and wanted to tell that I already fell in love with the forest post-apocalyptic atmosphere!
Can't wait to actually play it! I'll post second comment after I complete it.

Developer(+1)

Have fun! I hope to not disappoint you :)

Wow that was an amazing game. The sounds had me spooked playing this, and i really liked the ending when you ran out of fuel!

Developer

Thank you!! I'm so happy to hear that you liked it, and I was able to spook you 😈

Submitted(+2)

Wow really ambitious to make a world game for a jam. The atmosphere is excellent and the monster was really scary. The exploration reminded me a lot of old horror games like Slenderman (You know what I mean lol). Anyways really well done!!

Developer

Thanks for playing! I am really happy to hear that! It was ambitious and I barely managed to finish it 💀

Submitted(+2)

Really liked the open world for a game like this. You nailed the map system, and I particularly appreciated the base being at 500, 500. It balanced being lost but still having a center. The sound was good too, great job!

Developer

Thank you so much! Glad I got the world navigation right, since its the main game mechanic

Submitted(+2)

Hey! Such a nice game! Amazing atmosphere. Was this map interaction inspired by Metro: Exodus?

Developer

Thank you! I'm glad to hear I got the atmosphere right, that was my number one goal.

I never played Metro Exodus, would you recommend it? I'm not sure how I got the idea, I guess I just wanted it to be easy to get lost, which adds to the tension when time's running out

Submitted(+1)

And you implemented this idea very nicely!
Metro Exodus is very atmospheric, you should take a look. And it also made by devs from the country whose flag is in the background of your profile picture.

Developer

Thank you. Yes, I know it's made in Ukraine, as a Ukrainian gamer it would be quite a shame not knowing that :) I've played the first metro game loong time ago, that game was so ahead of its time, I remember how real it felt, even by today's standarts it looks really good, ah... good times, now I feel nostalgic.
Honestly what am I doing, why haven't I played their next games

Submitted(+1)

Тоді, пане, скажу так: Exodus має свої слабкі сторони — частіше повʼязані з анімаціями і сценарієм — але атмосфера і експлорінг там дуже гарно зроблені, тому раджу!

Developer

Неочікувано, але приємно 🤗. Дякую)

YES, it truly resembles Metro: Exodus!

Submitted(+2)

I liked the vibe and the expansive world, but it seemed like there was not too much to do all over the place. It was ambitious of you to have made something this large, but it has a similar problem, I found, to a lot of open world games: a bit too much walking and not enough stuff going on. Anyway, the enemy was scary, and it reminded me of Into the Radius quite a bit. Nice entry!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thank you for playing!! It was definitely very ambitious (especially as my first finished 3d game lmao), I am surprised I actually managed to finish it, had to cut a lot of corners in the end, so your criticism is totally valid.

Although, I was aiming for immersive experience with stress of time running out and getting lost while being surrounded by monsters.

Glad you were spooked, never heard of Into the Radius, gonna check it out. Thank you again!

Submitted(+1)

cool vibe and impressive world!

Developer

Thank you!!

You got quite a lot done over just a few days! Nice job with all the map design and I like how you have the map exploration working. I feel there could have been more polish for the audio and creatures (at least how they appear in the day), but otherwise it works quite well!

Developer

Thank you for playing! And thank you for your feedback, I am so glad to hear that.

I'm surprised to hear that the audio wasn't good enough, I actually thought I spent too much time on that, what exactly did you not like about it? I appreciate the honest criticism!

Submitted(+1)

The audio wasn't bad, but I just thought it could have been a bit less jarring at times. I also feel like the audio for the creatures could have crept in a little more. However,  I will still say the game was ultimately pretty good and you really did a tremendous amount of work in the time we had for the game jam! I hope that bit of feedback about the audio isn't disparaging at all.

Developer

Not disparaging at all, this feedback is very important to me, thank you again!

Submitted(+1)

Great game! The atmosphere was very effective and the game was overall well-polished even if I don't usually like horror games. Good stuff!

Developer

Thank you for playing! I'm glad to hear that!

I also don't really like horror games, so idk why I did this 💀

Submitted(+2)

Fun game!! The map/compass is VERY well made. Got a bit jump-scared by the black enemy. Didn't realise I had a shotgun till the 3rd time I got attacked lol. Overall great job!!

Developer

Thank you for playing, I am so glad to hear that, sorry for that scare :D
The map was fun to make, I actually used the terrain heightmap and used python to generate the map with height lines

Submitted(+2)

Really cool, the performance was a little bad (Thanks to my old laptop) and some parts like moving the mouse felt slow. Sometimes i didnt know if i was filling the gas canister or i was pressing the wrong button, sometimes the player didnt get out of the bunker for some reason.

Pretty cool game, i couldnt play it a lot because lag, but is pretty cool.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing! I am quite surprised to hear about the lag, although I've never tested it on a less powerful machine, I just assumed it was simple and wouldn't lag.. Oh well..
