Fun story, such cool character sprites. the car maneuvering and physics feel amazing for such a short jam. Love the music and sfx too!
Thank you for playing the game, I hope you enjoyed it :)
This was really fun! The handling of the vehicles felt really nice (drifting around the turns felt great!), and I like the little bit of management involved as well. Intentionally crashing the car a little bit to stay awake is pretty funny :)
The graphics were solid as well; I especially liked the visual effect when falling asleep. And the music was a perfect fit!
My only real critique is that I wish the races had been a little bit more difficult; for most of the time in all the races, I don't think the other cars were anywhere near me, and I was only close to falling asleep at the end of the 72-hour race.
But even with that, this was a really great entry, and I had a lot of fun playing through it. Great job to everyone involved :)
Thank you for playing the game, I am glad you enjoyed the experience :) About the difficulty, I was feeling the same thing while I was balancing the game, but as this is a jam and people spend little time to play the game I wanted to avoid āfrustrationā during the gameplay so they can enjoy the whole content. In future releases, I will try to fine tune the difficulty. This is really important insight because it helps with the player experience, thank you so much.
I appreciate the story, it was fun! Controlled well and very fitting music!
"MacCoffee" is peak.
I loved the falling asleep and the effect, though I fell totally asleep on my 8th lap (despite going full speed with only tiny bumps the first 4.5 laps) - is there something I did wrong?
Thank you for playing the game. And yes, at least in the first two races the exhaustion is stronger because there is a non sleep requirement of 72 hours. So, as a player to maintain yourself awake you have to strategically crash your car to get some stamina back and open your eyes. The thing is, when you crash your car your exhaustion increments as well, because the player receives damage from the crash. So the player get awake a little bit but receives damage which is reflected as stamina exhaustion. Thatās the logic behind the mechanic of the game.
I didnāt want to explain this as a part of the game dialogue, because it will be kinda boring for the player to get this info I guess.
My advice: In the first races, be careful with the crashes but when you are close to 30% try to crash inmediately to get stamina back a bit and stay awake.
Following the logic of the game, there are different types of races: 72 hours without sleeping(max stamina exhaustion), 48 hours without sleeping(mid stamina exhaustion) and 24 hours without sleeping(low stamina exhaustion). The idea is to vary the way the player has to run these races. In the case of 72 hours, there will be short but more āchaoticā(Crashes) tracks but in the case of 24 hours the race is more about precision(Longer tracks and less crash to sustain).
I hope this explain the mechanic. Perhaps it need some polishm but thatās how I thought it.
Thank you! I will try to give it another try in the coming days.
Oh my god the polish, art, music, gameplay ... 10/10. So much fun to play!! Great job, truly!
Thank you for playing the entry, I am glad you had fun :)
Ok THIS IS GREAT. Like I genuinely had such a blast playing this and was disappointed when reached the end. First racing game I've ever seen that yes punishes you for strong impacts but REWARDS for lesser ones. Very cool resource management mechanic. Was a bit too easy for most of the game but unlike in other racing games I never felt truly safe even when having a great lead because still had to manage sleep. On the final race I was even blinking out right before the finish line!
Next, music. IT WAS SO HYPE. Like it was genuinely pretty good, not only it had me going with bpm etc, but it also was pretty nice to listen to.
Theme imple, emtation is, obviously, *chef's kiss*. The concept is just so good. Illegal mortally dangerous racing type thing (like older street racing themed games) but the core idea of having racers stay awake for a set amount of time before racing was so fun!
I liked the funky artstyle in the cutscenes. The art in the game itself was not as full of character but was still pretty good.
Finally, the spirit of the game. It has such a perfect mix of comedic absurdity and earnestness in how it's made!
I love this game, I truly do. (written by another undertaker member xD)
Thank you so much for playing the entry and for your detailed review, fully appreciated because in this way we know what people like :)
Took me a sec to get comfy with the driving controls, but once I did it was awesome. Really impressed with what you've done here with the limitations of the jam, great job!
Thank you for playing the game, I hope you had fun :)
AMAZING GAME!! I love the dithering on the 3D graphics style, it's super clean. I had a blast playing once i got the feel for the car, veryyy buttery smooth drifting once you lock in
because it took me a minute to get used to the car handling, it felt bad when i lost the first race because it was 8 whole laps to re-do!!! maybe 3 laps for a tutorial so if i am too slow at least it's short
but then 2nd attempt it was so fun going max speed!! The controls are really nicely dialed in, and a great sense of speed. I loved how easy it was to turn going fast. I was enjoying everything about it but playing multiple levels revealed upgrades didn't feel too impactful since i was so rich, and only had the choice to repair/coffee so it was obvious to spend it every time, unless i missed something in the repair shop. So I didn't feel compelled by completing races since I didn't feel like my car was progressing or upgrading. If i was slowly adding acceleration each round i might have wanted to play longer!
I also really liked the sleep mechanic and it was kind of terrifying!!! (Like IRL sleepy driving). One suggestion to make it a bit more fun might be to leave the compass visible on screen only, so you're still driving blind but aren't completely removed from the game cus it was a bit disorienting when the UI disappeared, while i liked the idea of the mechanic it felt slightly unfair. Really liked the sleepy blur effect! Amazing work!!
Wow, thank you for the detailed review, I appreciate it because it will give me solid input to improve in the future. Honestly I felt the progression feeling of the game a bit empty as well, I thought about adding more mechanics to make the shop more impactful, but I preferred to let it be instead and completing the core game loop. So as I empathize with this, I will add more relevance to the economy part of the game. I love the fact people loved the blur effect because I discovered it by accident while I as playing with the dithering matrix values haha, a lucky discovery I have to say xD Thank you for playing the game :)
This was me through out the entire time I was playing the game š:
Thank you for playing the game, I hope you enjoyed i :)
so, the game seemed to lag on GO, which is a little jarring, and screen transitions in general have this lag to them. with that aside this is a very good use of theme, the two HP bars complement each other nicely to make a fun racing game (even if it is single tracked) the story is nice even if i found the exchanges to be a little long winded and 'filler'. it shouldn't distract from the fact this a strong game and likely a top rated contender. i have a love/hate relationship with racing games so god job putting this one on the love side.
Thank you for playing the game and the feedback. I am glad our game is in your love side :) And yes, there is a little lag in the transitions and the go, I didnāt have the time to add async loading but definitely will be added after the jam. Same with tracks, at the moment we only added 2 because the time span of the jam but, the mesh library is already created and improved these days, so we will add more tracks.
Love the way the controls handled, did find that the stamina drop off was a bit steep I'd be at 30% then in the next second it would drop to zero. Had lots of fun with this one, it's rare that I enjoy a racing game as much as this.
Hey thank you for playing the game. I am glad you had some fun with the game. The stamina is linked to the time and how you crash the car, so sometimes if the car durability is low the exhaustion rate of the player rise, which makes stamina to decrease faster per second. The stamina varies with the number of numbers without sleeping required for the race, it will not be the same for a 24h as a 72h without sleeping.
My racing abilities are precisely described by "a driver who hasn't slept for 72 hours," but I enjoyed the game anyway! For some reason it reminded me of Ignition.
Great use of 1-bit graphics!
I am glad to read that you enjoyed the game(perhaps because your empathy with the lack of sleeping? hehe). I like racing games and I played Ignition which I really enjoyed, so itās nice to be a reminder of that game. Thank you for playing the game :)
This is an excellent entry! In terms of them, I thought the mechanic of having to wake yourself up was a really clever way to use the theme. For gameplay, the controls were tight and responsive and, although seemed difficult at first, I was able to master them pretty quickly and got 1st place on my first try of the last 2 races. And the give and take of crashing wakes you up but damages the car demands my attention on the balance of those 2 stats which was a fun additional challenge. The art style was cool and fit the tone of the game. The little bits of dialogue from the different characters added a lot of, well, CHARACTER to the game and I really appreciated that as well. Overall, excellent job!
Thank you for playing the game :) I appreciate how you share the experience while you were playing. It helps us to sit on the chair of the player.
This game was really cool, Iāve never seen a gameplay feature for a racing game that makes you want to crash your car in order to stay in the race. Very interesting and fresh, the second race felt impossible even with repairs and stamina completely full. I just wanted to write this review to let yāall know that this game was spectacular! :D
Thank you for playing the game :) I hope you enjoyed the experience
I'm honestly pretty impressed and surprised by this entry! I think you really made the 1bit art style work for you, which worked great for the tracks. I love that you included some story in here too when it could have been easier to just make it about the mechanics of the game. Great work, honestly.
Thank you for your feedback. I am glad you enjoyed playing our entry.
WOW, how have I not seen this before!! I loved the race track, really reminded me of daytona and the arcade racing machines. Great work!!
Thank you for playing the game, and I am glad it transmit you the daytona and arcade machines, that was one of the pillars of the design :)
i've always loved racing games, and this one's gimmick based on the jam theme is really interesting. even series like Burnout that are very much "about" crashing your car still have the act of crashing be something that you wanna avoid (unless you're playing a dedicated crash mode); but this game has you asking "when's the best time to crash my car on purpose?" while in the middle of a race.
the fact that it's a pretty solid racer even outside of that gimmick means that there's enough else going on outside of crashing to put pressure on the player to think on the spot. if you take a corner badly, or get bumped into by an opponent, then you might be able to wait a bit longer to crash than you otherwise would've; on a shorter track where you've been crashing in the same spot every lap to keep a steady exhaustion level, it can make you rethink your whole strategy. it's a really interesting mechanic, and of all the games i've played thus far, this is one i'd be most interested in seeing expanded into a longer game, maybe with more fleshed out driver AI and better course variety.
Thank you for playing the game :) Thank you for the feedback, really appreciated.
I enjoyed this very cool game
I am glad you enjoyed the game. Thank you for playing it.
I love how the fun cutscenes of dialogue are, they tell a good story that fits well with the theme. The racing is also very fun, and the art style looks great even with the 2 color restriction. I wish the ai was a bit better, bumping between cars is fun but once I got a lead it made no difference. Overall very good game :)
Thank you for playing the game. And yes, AI was a hard job, specially balancing it, I mean they have to look as a sleepy racers too. I am taking your comment and I will work on balancing it a bit in the future :)
Fun game! The main character reminds me of Michael "Goob" Yaghoobian.
Thank you for playing the game, I am glad you enjoyed it. And yes, the character is similar to Michael āGoobā Yaghoobian :) I didnāt notice until now hehe.
This was very fun! Im terrible at racing games but had a good time anyway! The trees were really cool, I liked them a lot! The music also added a lot to the experience and story was very fun!
Thank you for playing the game. I am glad you had a good time playing it :)
