Can't believe it took me so long to get round to this game, why was it hiding so far down my list?? This is a crazy achievement for 7 days, everyone involved is so talented I'm actually in awe.
The pixel art is well drawn and I especially love how it was implemented with the lighting/shadow effect on the ground elements as you walk. Really appreciate that extra care taken with the details. The character art/dialogue portraits are beautifully drawn and coloured, so much personality in every one and the cast is huge! Talking of characters, the dialogue was also well done and fitting to each personality and the game as a whole felt very cohesive in how it was presenting its narrative.
The music was gorgeous and very complementary with the overall tone and setting, however I was a little sad that it seemed to cut in and out in a way that didn't seem entirely deliberate? I'm not sure if it was intentional to have it come in and out, but the cuts were abrupt enough that to me it felt like it was supposed to loop, but stopped. I would've liked to hear more of the music because I was enjoying it a lot.
The other side of the audio - the SFX - was excellent, the occasional ambient noises were so perfect and occasionally creepy, really well executed and added to the atmosphere.
Okay, I will take a break from the glazing now to bring up the minor negative parts - firstly the UI elements (buttons on the book, settings menu) being default felt very out of place for how visually cohesive everything else was. Secondly, there were some typos in the dialogue... I wish I had more criticisms than that so this comment is less disgustingly lovey but I've got nothing. Oh the music thing! Yes we'll add that to my list of negatives, none of which are dissuading me from giving 5 stars in everything...
Gameplay, for me was very satisfying. Mind bending at times, but it felt fair. I liked that each level you kind of knew you were going the wrong way because you didn't have the new rule yet, but you had to follow the instructions "undecoded" to unlock the new rule to then follow the same instructions decoded to reach the goal. It felt narratively impactful to have to go through that.
Congratulations to the team, this is such a fantastic entry!
Thank you so much, realy! You have no idea how much this means to all of us. We deeply appreciate anyone who takes their time to get into the game and play it. Your feedback is incredibly valuable to us and will be a great help at improving the current version of this game to make it even more enjoyable. This is our first propper Project working together in this constellation and so much feedback and appreciation motivates us all to keep going and work together again in the future to realize our dreams.
Nice art and game, although I have to admit it took me a bit too long to finish!
I also just have to warn whomever is reading this (SPOILERS!): on the level when Gaslight give you a silent treatment, light a right fire, or you'll have to replay the game from the start.
thank you so much for really taking the time to play all the way. we know how long that takes from our playtesting! much love <3
Welp, that took me a long! A tons of work clearly went into this game, well done. The characters are fun — met lots of them, but still thinking I somehow missed a few somewhere between Loki and Munchausen :D
Still, I had fun trying to escape the maze the whole time!
wait are you sure :’D ? youd have to skip pinocchio which should autoplay upon entering maze9. might feel like you skipped a step because i added a kinda lonely maze after loki where there are no npcs, could feel weird pacing wise ^^ if you actually did skip pinocchio and cicero ill have to inform the authorities mister hackerman.
anyway enough rambling, thank you so much for taking the time to play to the end it means alot to the team!
Cool game, like the aesthetic! Where am I?
What are you meant to do at eyes wide shut?
haha ty :) maybe a lil hint helps: it affects the whole sentence not just the number!
I really love the art style, and the atmospheric sounds are also great. I did end up confused about the instructions on some levels which cost a whole lot of time trying to find the right exit of the levels, so for me the game got much too long for a jam game and I had to give up after almost an hour’s worth of playing.
I think if there was a way to move faster in the maze it would have helped some but I also think at least some levels are a couple of times larger than they need to be to sell the point that you are not supposed to brute force your way through. Or some other mechanic to force the player to understand the riddles of the instructions. Which I never fully did, but partially did.
So exploring got a bit frustrating in the end. And I hope I wasn’t right on the edge of the actual exit when I gave up.
Play-through with more feedback:
thank you very much for making a video. that kind of playtesting is by far the most helpful! i now realize what the problem is (probably for alot of other players aswell). you didnt use the notebook at all and probably didnt realize the (extremely important) notes that kept popping up on the top right were added to your notebook. theres some other things i learned but that was the big one.
i think i know what i gotta do! thank you again :)
towards the end I did start to use the notebook a bit and it did help some but still I was a bit confused at times.
Hey, thank you so much for taking all this time to play and review our game and even make this very insightful video. We have reviewed it carefully and believe it illustrates our biggest Problems Perfectly. I think with your Note that this might not be the right format for a gamejam Entry you are on the right track and we are working on making the gameplay loop more claer to players this second.
So the mechanics to find the brazier that leads to the next level are as follows: You usually get directions by Gaslight that are untrue in some way but have an easy modifyer to decode the actual meaning. If you follow the directions, they lead you to an NPC that tells you the important Clue to decrypt what Gaslight told you, then you use the decrypted new directions from the starting point of the level to get to a brazier that takes you to the next level. There you get new directions, another modifyer to decrypt them and so on. Your most helpful Tool is the Notebook that lists all your clues for solving the directions and allows you to even draw the right directions if you want to visualize them.
I think The part that makes the Game unplayable for many People is if youre unable to find the Npc with the new clue because their information becomes relevant in levels there after. I see now how this is so complex a mechanic, that especially as a Jam entry would only end up confusing players if not explained propperly. I hope i can improve the guidance by altering the introductory Text to our game. Eiter way, your Review has been tremendously helpful, thank you!
Glad to hear it helped! that’s the main reason I record my play-through and thoughts while playing.
Considering the title of this game and my username, I simply couldn’t resist playing it... And the visuals won me over.
haha truuuuue
I really enjoyed the artwork and design, great work! Very spoopy 0_o
Yuh-uh!!! Yuh-uh!!! Yu-uh!!!
The art was really cool. Poor straw man has no heart :( I love the Wolf. Female/Male Door, very nice! a way to run through the maze quicker might be nice unless I missed what the sprint hot key is. It was cool when the music finally kicked in, I wish I heard that sooner. It is really cool you can draw in the book.
much love <3
Lovely art!
Thank you! Our Artists really worked night and day to make it happen!
great art, and woah thats a lot of content for a gamejam entry
Thank you haha, we werent originally planning on making this much but i suppose scope creep got the best of us! we really apreciate anyone who sticks around for the ride
Lovely art and atmosphere, great work! ;))
Nice one, it was really difficult to find the path, and I also gut stuck. I don't know where Puck was, and got stucked on the eyes wide shut level as someone commented before.
hey, thank you for playing :) would you be down to talking on discord a little, im genuinely curious what might be going on with people not finding puck sum_catnip on discord if you’re down, id appreciate it!
Super cool use of the theme, nice writing & sound! Got stuck on eyes wide shut.
The character art is really beautiful! It feels a little different from the art style of the map, but overall it’s a really good game.
Good game!!!! I got stuck on the eyes wide shut level but i think I missed some important clarifying npcs (like that puck the fool mentioned) I enjoyed it a lot and I like chester!!
yeah you skipped a step somehow haha thanks for playing <3
great game, only feedback i would give constructively is to give the different characters different fonts, some of the conversations between two and three people got a little confusing unless paying very close attention to the nametag
art is fantastic, good sound design and can tell a lot of effort has been put into this. great work
thank you and fully agreed! in all honesty we didnt think about fonts at all and then shoved in the font that the itch.io page used last minute haha
Love the pixel art style! I got stuck at the door level but I enjoyed it tremendously!
Really makes you think making it perfectly fit with the theme, though something that does take me out of it a bit is the inconsistency of the art style between the overworld and the dialogue, but they both look good individually!
Gorgeous artwork, and love that you can scribble on the notebook! Really well done.
no u :p
