How does the game fit the theme?
The game's central puzzle mechanic is about trusting no one (unless they all agree) to solve the riddles

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
Two SFX were taken from free-sound as stated on the jam page.

I also reused my core jam code that is a walking sim movement controller and stuff for sounds but as the game's mechanic is quite simple, most of it wasn't used.

The shader used throughout the world was an experiment I had done some weeks earlier.

How many people worked on the game?

This was a work of art! I loved the black & white wavy line aesthetic set in a 3D world. The graphics, as minimal as they were, was a good choice and fit the mood. The bgm was perfect. The characters were quirky. The riddles, clever. The game loop was very enjoyable, and you incorporated the theme into it deftly. My only critique would be a way to advance the dialogue - I didn't know some npc's had more to say  so I missed key info, but it was fun going from room to room, getting excited when I progressed and disappointed when I went back to the beginning lol.

Developer

Thanks for the detailed feedback! I do agree a way to progress dialogue would have been very good and I have that ready for the post-jam update.

Awesome game with very unique visuals! I love the whole premise and how silly it is. The riddles are great and got my brain thinking a LOT. Most of the puzzles are very logical (though there is one where it was like "bring jolly mirth something.." that I didn't get). I got an ending even though I lost which I assume is kinda intentional? The sound effects are well implemented and the bug characters are soo awesome! However, I would've liked a more satisfying ending (though that might be asking too much for a game jam xD). Overall, this was a fun game that got me thinking so much but a good amount of it that seemed logical. Great work team!!

Developer(+1)

Yeah you are totally right with regards to the ending. I wanted to make four dedicated endings and dragging out the process a bit after having gotten the room with the four creatures on the doors but with the cat having kidney stones (he’s much better now) and end jam fatigue I had to make it much simpler than planned.

Very happy you liked the game and the visuals and the riddles didn’t fully trip you over! The one you are referring to, the most difficult of the elemental rooms, you need to notice that the snail is rhyming:

IT MIGHT BE
WORTH,
MIGHT BRING
JOLLY MIRTH,
TO HEAD
INTO ????

The second part is realizing there’s only one critter in there so “everyone” is agreeing. =)

Ahhh that makes sense! I thought it was a pop culture reference xD. Gosh, its good to hear that your cat is okay!! I highly appreciate you for still submitting a really solid game despite your circumstances during the jam!

Marvellous entry, honored to be your 20th rating.

Probably the most elegant "everyone lies" puzzle game I've seen during the jam. Your writing style forces the player to stop in their track and take some time to absorb every hint, It makes the deduction process a lot more gratifying. Having a game more centered on reading comprehension and culture than logic feels very nice after so many pure puzzle, I really appreciate that. Althouth I started getting repeat room pretty quickly I understand how hard it must have been to add much more.

The presentation is pretty much perfect for your subject matter, everything is sleek and minimalist, not a single thing too much. Especially love your music choice : most of the time you barely notice it's there and then it hits you with that accordion. Perfect fit for the whole thing.

If I had to nitpick so that my review isn't just pure sycophancy I'd say that an option to click on a text bubble to get to the next dialogue would have been really nice. They're a bit too slow as it is and I sometime had to wait 2-3 seconds just to get the extra bit of info I needed.

Amazing job, absolutely podium worthy, hats off to you all.

Developer

Thank you so much for your detailed review and in helping me get past 20 ratings! I’m very glad you liked it that much.

I agree that clicking to progress the multi-part bubbles would have been very nice to have.

This game is a masterpiece, I love it.

The game's style is like a dynamic, paper-thin scrolling game; it's simple, with only neutral colors. It's truly incredible how they incorporate the looping concept into this type of game, and it looks even better when there's a narrative.

Something that happened to me was that I reached a door and could see the space of the scene.

Developer

So glad you liked it!

Oh no, I was so sure that I had completely patched out the bug that caused the next room to not be properly placed! You don’t happen to know roughly what you were doing when you triggered it? What number the room has that you were leaving?

This was great. Played and commented on stream here:

Such a treat waking up to a recorded play-through of the game!

The start-screen with mouse lock was a bit of a gamble and I was out of energy to make something proper :) but I should probably have also made it release the mouse when jumping and crouching too.

I’m not sure what I did say to make you think I was french, maybe something about keyboard layouts on your game? I’m Swedish with a QUERTY keyboard, it just has a bit of strange placements for some of the buttons =)

I’m very glad I did try hard to make the riddles easier, but it is very plainly so from your recording that at least as a jam-game I should have either tried to make them easier still or I not have kept the 9 required solutions in a row to trigger the ending.

Glad you enjoyed it!

The keyboard rebinding made me think French indeed, I guess I misheard! The rebinding was doubly funny, because jump was obviously never required in the end hehe.

I love the art direction. I love how animated the surroundings are. I LOVE THE BUGS.

Nice work! I played through to the end, and the snail was mad at me. (I am a big fan of the bug art btw)

The theme is followed very well - each room is a logic puzzle where the inhabitants give you riddles for you to sort out which doors they do and do not want you to enter. Beyond that, you also need to keep in mind that if they DO what you to enter all different doors, then enter the one that no one wants you to enter. BUT if they all want you to enter the same door (or some want you to enter a door and others don't want you to enter other doors) then you SHOULD enter that one.

Thankfully, the hallway scene works as a great intro and reminder for what you are trying to do. I liked the hallway - the wall variations were nicely done. Sometimes, I wished I could sprint through it, but it was not too long.

Also, movement felt great to me, especially for a web based 3d. I did not feel motion sick, and the camera movement was smooth.

The riddles are funny, and have some pus/wordplay based on the critter who is giving the riddle, and the symbols on the doors were apparent (for the most part) as to what they were for. Easiest to understand was the card suites. Hardest was the explosion symbol. And the most complicated riddles were the fruit rooms.

I really liked the art - the critters were well drawn, and I like little bugs and things in my games. The music was also very nice, sort of a post-rock soundtrack? It actually reminded me of some of the Transistor (by Supergiant) soundtrack.

Developer(+1)

Oh thank you so much for the detailed feedback! Glad you liked the bugs. Most of them are based on photos that my wife has taken. I’m glad you got to the end. I really tried to make the riddles not too hard and kept making them easier and easier but I might have a knack for making very hard riddles :)

My musician will surely be thrilled to hear that you compared his music to that in Transistor!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the compliment on the music. The Transistor soundtrack is definitely in my regular rotation - makes me wish I had thrown in some guitar in there!

Oh, and if you want a listenable version of the track in the game: https://polymonic.com/releases/trust-no-one/

This is a very cool concept for the jam theme! It really kept me focused through the whole run. The visuals are great. I   really liked the artstyle. The signs had this effect on  them which I really liked and    NPCs are also very well drawn. Music is very very good. It fits the game extremely well.  I really liked the atmosphere.

Mechanics wise I    loved that when you walk from door to door, it can either load a new level or reset to level 1. This transition is very smooth and feels great. Really good idea and polish on it!

Overall, I really enjoyed the game. Nice job !

Developer

Thank you so much for the detailed comment. I particularly like the delay between choosing a door and having to walk the hall to see if you did the right choice too. Even though it caused me a handful of bugs having to cover all possible player actions ._.

I thoroughly enjoyed this game! The game stays focused on the key aspects as you navigate each room, attempting to discern the correct answer. I did appreciate being able to use repetition to solve some of the harder rooms, as there were a few that were partially up to chance. I really enjoyed the art style, characters, and music for this one. It created a very enjoyable atmosphere.

I generally didn't have any issues except at the very end. I was stuck on the game screen, unable to exit, change tabs, or recover my cursor for some reason. The only way I was able to quit was by using the Tab key to refresh the page.

Besides that, excellent entry!

Developer

Thanks for the thorough feedback! Glad you enjoyed it. The bug you got is very strange. I don’t do anything fancy at all, just reload the current scene. It does ofc cause a bit of a spike in the strain on the computer but nothing that should cause more than a little stutter. Might have been that the browser tab of yours was having a bad day :) or there’s some slow building memory leak in my code I’m unaware of.
