How does the game fit the theme?
You must maintain your sanity. When you don't, you may see things that may or may not be there. Your mind could be playing tricks on you. Can you trust what you see with your own eyes?

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
Some of the sound effects, but some were made by scratch. Some textures from poly haven. Everything else made from scratch otherwise.

How many people worked on the game?

nice art style. I liked the gameplay aswell. good feeling of shooting in your game. by making this cool 2d animations and sounds nice work

Developer

Ty! A lot of our choices we're made of what would be cool but also quick enough to do for the deadline. So the 3d animated gun was faster than doing it in 2d, but likewise the 2d enemies would've taken longer to make in 3d. So things just kind of worked out that way.

Thanks for playing!

I didn't realize I had to type words until I read comments LOL
Great visual and sounds, the illusions aren't hard to figure out until it's the sanity demon (yikes)

Very satisfying game overall!

Developer(+1)

Yeah our tutorialization could had been better, it will be something we focus on in the future lol.

Thanks for trying out our game!

Awesome idea with the sanity mechanic. Furiously typing words while also trying to aim and shoot felt great!

Developer

I'm glad you had fun!

Submitted(+1)

Accidentally kept clicking throught the tutorial popups XD The visuals are amazing though. Very nicely made!

Developer(+1)

I knooow, the tutorial we put in last second and didn't think about clicking through them like that ughu. Thank you for the compliment and trying out our game though!

Yooo, this is such a cool game. It’s got an interesting concept with the sanity mechanic. The variety of enemies and the ways in which the game tricks the player make it so much more interesting. I particularly liked the tutorial style, with its cheerful gloom

One of my favourite games I've found so far at this game jam

Developer

"Cheerful gloom" is such a banger phrase. Ty for playing and I'm glad you liked it!

I'm REALLY IMPRESSED. This game seriously needs to be at the top of the entries not gonna lie. The art is mad good, the gameplay is really impressive. The music, the character design, the HUD, the tutorial, everything is perfect and top notch. Amazing job to the team.

Developer(+1)

Awwe, that's hella nice to hear! I'm so glad you liked it!

Submitted(+1)

The art is absolutely insane! The multitasking aspect really plays with your head, I felt like I was losing my sanity IRL, lol. Great game love it!

One problem for me was the tutorial, I was spamming to shoot and suddenly a screen popped up and got skipped immediatly

Developer

Yeh theres a few ways we can fix that. Probably will be the first thing we do post game jam lol.
Tyty!

It's quite a hard game to try to multitask typing and shooting, and making sure no enemy gets too close.

But it's really fun and addictive!

Developer

Yeh it's two very different skillsets we're asking of the player. The goal is to nudge you into that flow state but we tried out best lol. Tyty!

Pretty good game!

Loved the art immensely. The polish on this is insane. My personal view is that typing and shooting didn't really go well together, because typing forces the speed of the game to go down. Loved the minimap and the different types of enemies a lot! And it just felt really well made!

Developer(+1)

That's fair, Glad you gave it a go and found something in it lol

Incredible work! This is one of the games that sees me wanting to try again and get farther into the wave.

I absolutely love the typing aspect and it’s an interesting skill combination to try and blend with the aiming.

This one is pretty good, so let me suggest some ways to improve the experience further. If you plan on post-jam update that is.

It would be better if the “no tutorial” setting was acknowledged by the game because at first i didn’t even think you had it, i just assumed the tutorial always plays. There are many things that could be done. The tutorial tells you about it, or the second time that you play, that’s when it tells you, maybe even gives you a checkbox to click right then and there. However it is also important to note that you may not have read every single tutorial page. It’d be a good thing if there’s like tutorial progress that can be reset, so you see each page once unless you reset the progress. In addition make sure that clicks don’t happen for 1 second so players don’t accidentally skip the tutorial while shooting. Happened to me once on the big reddish entity, didn’t get to read its name and function. It’d make sense if we could browse the tutorial when not playing, like an index book or something, to get a refresher on-demand without the stress of the wave in-between each page.

In addition it’d be very important for people to be able to know how far they got. Usually this is a score, but you may come up with something more unique. Like stats for the end of the wave that can be shared and compared. I see many people in such games screenshot their stats and post them in the comments to see who can do it best so you’ll probably be getting more engagement out of it too, and it’s just more fun to know exactly how well you did each time. Stats may include words typed, words mistyped, negative words typed, negative words mistyped, enemies killed, time alive, total sanity drained, total sanity replenished, etc. Some games have even gone as far as plotting some of the stats on a graph which i find pretty cool and it’s rather easy to code too. You just need to store an array of values and to render it, you need to know the maximum and minimum value, which will let you properly resize the graph so its range fits the data. (here’s an example from one of my other jam games: https://tomsterbg.itch.io/brushed-dc-motor)

Also it feels like the wave ramps up exponentially. Usually these games would have difficulties or different balance depending on what you’d want. Personally i’d say to rebalance it in a way that it is possible to get really far if you’re skilled, but you might say that a 2-5 minute wave is better, so that should be up to the player to decide via a difficulty choosing system.

Once a difficulty is in place, one may also make it properly, meaning that different mechanics change depending on the difficulty settings. For example, the weapon may have a shorter cooldown when you actually hit something, rewarding consecutive shots, but also this gives a contrast to how it feels when you miss. Or the shooting enemy may shoot more frequently. Or the radar may have a different range (which should be indicated in some way). Or the enemy strafing could be changed to be faster or less predictable if the game is meant to be harder.

Sorry if i’ve gotten carried away, i like to dream! Hope this is useful!

Wow, that is really insightful. These a lot of great ideas. Some of which the team has been throwing back an forth actually. We might take a couple of these or at least consider them :p

Also yeeeeh, a score system may that be a timer or what have you would've added a lot of replay-ability and fun to compare against people that play. That's probably the first thing that we do post-jam huehue. Tyty for all the thoughts!!!

This is a really sweet game. I love typing games with a twist. I love unique multi-tasking. However, the performance was a bit choppy on my browser and the downloadable didn't work so I couldn't play as much as I wanted to. But I definitely see the spark and loved what you put out!

Developer

Oh no! Dang, do you mind telling me what browser you're using?

Also uh-oh. We'll need to figure out the downloadables. So sorry;;

Firefox…

Yah the programmer on our team got ours exported fine. Packaged as a zip file. There are some dlls and stuff we needed I guess.

What a game! in terms of execution and some of the aspects of the game, this is superb! I don't think the typing and gunplay goes together quite well (at least didn't flow for me), BUT, in terms of execution, artstyle and overall enjoyment, among the better games i've played so far!

Developer

Ty, we tried our best xp

Submitted(+2)

Damn stressing in a good way, I also felt some ultrakill vibes hope Im correct. Pretty solid job. Well done

Developer(+1)

I dooo love Ultrakill though that wasn't on purpose. Tyty~

Cool and fun game! Really liked the dark aesthetic and sound design. I also liked the typing multitasking you have to do haha

Developer

Tyty!

Really nice game! Loved the visuals and art style.  The audio was also very well made.

I really enjoyed the shooting and typing aspects, and when allowing your sanity to go to low every starts changing. The frame rate was also very solid, though dipping a little bit in the later game.

The story was interesting, and the gameplay is solid. My single complaint is it could have a scoring system.

I would love to see Type Therapy expanded into a larger game!

Fantastic entry.

Developer

Truuue, I was thinking about at least a timer or something. If we had like a day or more that might've been added as an extra in the settings menu. Thank you for playing!

Submitted(+2)

Cool, the visuals are stunning. I found it little too hard to manage the typing and shooting XD but maybe I am just a noob.

Developer

No your experience makes sense xp. The game asks you to juggle two different skill sets. If this were a bigger thing we would need to spend more time easing players into both.

Ultimately it isn't an experience you "beat" so the difficulty just manages the pacing before the end.

Thank you for the feedback!

動けないFPS、面白いね。 雰囲気が良いし、やりごたえがあって楽しかった! 弾が効いてるのか分かりづらい時があったから、それだけ少し気になったかも知れない。

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much! I agree we did need some hit feedback, next time we'll fix that. Glad you liked the rest of it though.

どうもありがとうございます!確かに、いくつか改善点についてのフィードバックが必要でしたね。次回は改善します。それ以外は気に入っていただけて嬉しいです。 (この部分はGoogle翻訳です笑)

I am not a huge fan of shooting games, but I am a fan of this. It takes a generic shooting game and makes it different by using words what a unique mechanic. It forces you to really be engaged and intentional with what your doing like what words your typing. It wasn't exactly clear to me what typing the words do except maybe I had a speculation that it slowed down the enemies but wasn't sure. It wasn't also clear how to defeat those big guys. This game I could see it becoming a full game though

Developer

Thanks for playing,

The longer you survive, the more is explained about what the typing  mechanic impacts. For the "big guys" you could either been seeing a hallucination that can't take damage, but also can't hurt you, or you just needed to shoot them more. Some of the enemies take more hits. You are right that typing words does slow down the enemies, but I would say "if you don't type, the enemies will speed up" is a better description.

easy to click the tool tips when shooting fast.

emasculate vibes, and very fun.

Developer

Thank you very much! Yeh the tips were last second additions, we will for sure need to fix that.
