An Ace Attorney style game on the GB is such a great idea! The Sprites for each of the monsters in particular are super well done, oodles of style in a very small size.

Sorry to hear that y’all weren’t able to finish it in time, I would love to play it after if you guys manage to flesh it out!

P.S. if you have some frustrations with the programming side of GB Studio, I could probably give you guys some tips to achieve what you’re looking for! (we used a few plugins and some of the built-in GBVM scripting)

I love the whodunit gameplay twist for the dungeon setting, would love to see it completed in some form even if in another title or format. The sprites, tiles, and music are all classic Game Boy in a very good way. I enjoyed the extra little details like torch tile animation and the custom dialogue frame, the latter of which I feel would elevate lots of GB Studio games.

I saw the comment about the frustrations with GB Studio. It's definitely a challenge to program a non-trivial gameplay system that isn't covered by the default scene types. Actually, I remember now we had a chat about the flags as well. Sometimes I enjoy trying to think of alternative implementations within the limitations, but maybe not within the timeframe of a game jam. Makes me want to learn the custom scene type and plugin stuff though, maybe for next year.

Poor Glorbo had such a cute overworld sprite. I knew they couldn't have done it, but in the name of trial and error I let them take the fall anyway.

Please don’t use flashing white transition betwen area you will move across many time, it is a possible epilepsy issue and does strain the yes a lot because most of your colors tend dowarsd the subtle green an then you get flashed with the harsh white.

Sprites were neatly done, the area looked nice. SFX and MX were good, sadly the game lacks it features, hopefully you can finish it one day.

Good catch on the epilepsy risk. I was using the default screen transition for GBStudio, but it sounds like I'll need to put some thought into changing that for when I revisit it.

Submitted(+1)

Just to add some context, that’s the default GB Studio scene transition and it’s based on how the original Game Boy display behaves.

On the original non-backlit LCD, the pixels fade back toward the screen’s natural background and the effect reads much more softly. On a modern backlit display or emulator, the same transition can look much brighter and harsher.

This makes a lot of sense. I wonder if it might be less of a flashbang in a palette without such a wide range in value, or with its brightest value closer to gray than white. Some grayscale palettes feel more like playing a hardware Game Boy, or well a Game Boy Pocket, and are less harsh than the default DMG green palette on a backlit display.

I was immediately hooked, then very sad when the dialog wasn't done. Hopefully you can finish this after the jam! The Gameboy vibes are perfect.

Really creative game, I wouldn't think of something like this xD

I liked the pixel art used in it too, really nice!

Congrats!!!

I love the music and the art design. The warlock reminds me of that guy from Final Fantasy 9. Keep going!

I really like the idea of an investigation game set inside a dungeon, and the visual and audio details are very well done.

There’s already a system for questioning the suspects, but the game seems to stop there at the moment, so it’s a bit difficult to judge the gameplay itself.

Still, the concept is interesting and the presentation is really polished.

Developer

Yeah sometime after the jam I intend to go and implement the dialog since I didn't have time to get that done before the end.

Played on the Game Boy 🕹️

Real shame that the questioning was not functional as I think

This would have been a really interesting game.

Art and sound are on point as well as quiry'ness.

Good job 🙌

Developer(+1)

We had a scenario written out, but didn't get to implementing it. I figure I'll get that finished sometime in the near future.

I also want to see what its like once its done.

Amazing concept! Very nice visual

I found this game really funny. I expected to fight the people I first encountered but instead got immersed in a great story and what seems to be a detective adventure. I was really shocked when the cute NPCs turned out to be like actual monsters when I talked to them.  I hope y'all keep on working on the game!

Developer

Our goal was absolutely to give the vibe of the GBC port of *Dragon Warrior*, and then bait and switch into a detective story.

Submitted

The initial premise really hooked me. Once I talked to the skeleton and then the blob, I suspected something was up with what, on the surface, looks like a classic GB dungeon crawler.

There’s a lot of good humour here and I really liked how it kept subverting my expectations. The art and overall polish are great too.

I do wish the conversation/combat section had been implemented, because I feel like the final product would have been hilarious.

Very fun - Ace Attorney meets Shin Megami Tensei. Top notch.

Developer

I intend to go back an implement the dialog. We had a scenario drafted out, but did not get to implementing it.

Our programmer was grumbling about limitations of GBStudio, since every time they thought of a way to approach the Press option, it required C language features that GBStudio obfuscates away.

Never trust a Warlock when paper contracts are involved, even the small dialog we got from his was enough to make him the prime suspect!

Any plans on implement the last parts of the gem after the jam is done?
This really has a solid skeleton of a game, what ye folks have made is really neat!

Developer(+2)

I can't speak for the rest of the team, but I intend to go back and finish the dialogue last little bits of the game.

Submitted

Very good concept unfortunately i can guess that you ran out of time because no dialogue during the investigation talking to everyone. concept, music and pixel art are very great :)

Submitted

The concept is so fun! Such a shame you didn't manage to finish it. I laughed about an idea of the hero finding an already slain dragon and being a detective instead. The slime sprite is so great.

Even though it's incomplete, the level of polish in what is there is super impressive for the time you had. I love the concept and the visuals are great.

Developer(+1)

I'm hoping to go back and implement the last of the programming and dialogue without the crushing pressure of under ten hours left in the jam. Will link to the final version from its page should that happen

gl! I would def check out a finished version if you end up releasing it

I love the idea behind this one, and I genuinely think its completed state would have been a lot of fun! A lot of the enjoyable elements are present even in the barebones, with the subversion of "slaying the dragon", the use of the "but thou must" trope, and all the dry humor to be found in what's available. The graphics make very good use of shading and I think it conveys everything well, and the music has the right theming and tone. It feels a lot more like a game that could have been a real Gameboy release as opposed to a more retrospective looking game.

I hope I get to see this idea fully realized, and you should be proud of the progress you made!
