This is really good and congratulations on your first project!

Your first game! Congratulations! Idk if you know this, but this jam had something like 17,000 sign ups and only 2200 submissions. So that right there makes you a top 10% dev! You literally beat almost 15,000 people who didn't have what it takes to follow through. That alone will take you far.

Onto the review!

Here's the good.

  • Theme/Narrative. You've got a great sense of atmosphere. You set  a scene well. I felt deeply pulled in reading the story alongside the piano track.
  • You built characters. You had multiple endings. Clearly you are a gamer and can see what gamers like.
  • I say this again because its that important. You finished. You submitted. No matter what be proud of that. You're among the few who completed the jam and have what it takes to have an idea and see it through to the finish line. That alone makes you a true dev.

Here's the critique. Not bad. This is blunt for improvement purposes.

  • Gameplay - this is your first game I won't spend much time here because you were smart to keep the scope simple and small to ensure you completed it. Its a trivia game. The narrative was on point, but it reminded me of that ProZD skit where the cutscene doesn't match the gameplay and it goes from an emotional story arc to like, Bejeweled lol.
  • Art - Again, first game. No shade. I think this was mostly art assets and they didn't really mesh well. Seemed more like a magazine collage than a cohesive vision. For your next jam, check out the itch.io asset store. There are tons of literally FREE bundles you can use for art assets to make sure everything is cohesive.
  • Game Design - I wasn't entirely sure when trust no one  should be selected, sometimes both of them didn't know the answer and I'd decide to side with one because i helped the other the round before, and their bar would decrease because they were wrong. I thought my decision helped whoever no matter what.
  • UI/Polish - Feedback is CRAZY important for games. You want a player to literally feel your game. A button should change when hovered, move when clicked, have a sound. The only interactable in the game was the button selection. But even buttons can seem professional. Here's a great asset you can use if you use Godot that explains juice REALLY well - and even has sample code you can play with. I turn to it all the time. https://qaqelol.itch.io/tweens

Final note.

You did great man. Be proud of yourself. Even Da Vinci drew stick figures before the Mona Lisa.

the characterisation was really excellent! i do wish there were some more telltale signs if a character was lying or not though, sometimes it felt as though i just knew something was true or false from general knowledge. also a tip for any future projects (because i'd love to see more from you!) i'd recommend either completing the text after a click or drastically increasing the text speed, it felt a little too slow and made my attention wander a few times. the ambience and overall gameplay was fun though :DD

Developer(+1)

hey, thanks for your feedback its genuinely helpful

yes the character feedback was something i had in mind however just wan out of time to implement and finding the matching asset packs for free with animations was a challenge in itself.

autocomplete text is something i am going to learn for the next game. i wanted to go for a conversational atmosphere but fully get it can be a long wait for the next line of text and is noted.

thanks again! :)

Congrats on your first project!

Really cool quiz, I really liked the characters, also the ambience is top notch.

Submitted(+1)

First full project? Nice job. Some facts in the game ruined my life... :'(

Submitted(+1)

Great fun, great writing - love the dry humour! Thought the pixel portraits were fun, I would have liked to see the rest of the game also in pixels as it was a bit jarrying, but entertaining nonetheless, and a cool idea!

Submitted(+1)

I like the game but try to make the art more homogeneous. You have some problems with the rest sources. If it entertained me, I would like you to try my game and receive your feedback

Submitted(+1)

I get the idea behind it but I can't quite vibe with it. I do like trivia games.

Developer(+1)

thanks for the feedback, anything specific that felt off to you? Be brutal if you need to I know there’s tons to improve on

Submitted

Personally I found the text (especially in prologue) quite hard to read. And the trivia screen was like a mix and match of artstyles, default Godot font there, the progress bar on top of pixel art.

Developer

yeah the art needs work, I focused on the content and struggled to find matching assets

thanks for the feedback I am going to make the game look nicer after the jam

Submitted

The game had a really good vibe! I liked the prologue with the music and the typing, it got me into the vibe. It would be nice if there were reactions when you answer and dont trust someone just to make it feel more alive.

Developer

hey, thanks for your feedback and if I make this into a full length game the reactions would 100% be something I would do

the assets are all free and had to work with what I could find haha

will go play your game when I am at my PC, appreciate your time

pretty good game ngl

This was fun ! I liked the concept and the questions were really suprising. Cool music and art too.

Great work for a first game for sure! Having one with an actual end (not to mention 4 of them) is definitely an accomplishment!

Submitted(+1)

Interesting idea, fun trivia, it could be more visually appealing, but I liked it.

Developer

thankyou for the feedback, art is not my strong suit as you can probably tell and i have had to use a bunch of different free assets, i will tidy up the game and release after the gamejam

Submitted

Nice idea, I could check my own knowledge <3. I am not sure what bars do though, they just go down and when bar is empty nothing happens (bug perhaps?). Also, nice ambient!

Developer(+1)

someone else mentioned this, when the bar empties it should be an endgame but i believe i have it set to less than 0 rather than 0. will go into the code and fix, thanks for the feedback its greatly appreciated :)

Submitted

Nice trivia questions, I knew most of them but some I wasn't sure.  TIL that guy was buried in a big ol pringles can.

It wasn't clear what the consequence was for getting things wrong.  I saw health bars but they were always at halfway.  Would be nice to press space or click or something to skip the text drawing, as I was reading faster than it draws.

Developer

hey, so just to confirm the trust meters didnt go up or down when you were answering questions? thats a first for that bug if so and ill have to do some debugging. for clarity, trusting a hint givers answer and it being correct gives +5 trust, going with a hint giver who is incorrect is -10 trust, reason being is its easy to lose trust but hard to gain back

thanks for the feedback will have a look at the issues and potentially speed up the writing or add a complete/skip button before the edit period is up

Submitted

I really liked the idea! Good random facts, I am proud to say i knew most of them! The intro text was a bit hard to read since it wasn't anchored

Submitted(+1)

Great game idea! But I have few issues with the game:

1) difficult to gain trust and very easy to lose it.

2) ending crashed my laptop (it just stood frozen until force shutdown).

Developer (1 edit)

hey, i did the trust thing deliberately just to make it a little more brutal and realistic as trust is hard to gain easy to lose. and wanted to make the secret ending a little easier to access, what ending was it that crashed the game? empty trust meters or a full trust meter or getting through all 31 rounds with no winner? i can take a look at the code

thanks for the feedback will take a look at your game

Submitted

empty trust meter. I'll try to repeat it and reply if it happens again

Submitted

Nope, happened only once. And upon repeating it went normally. Must be my laptop issue

Cool short game! Loved the ideia of the "squid games" vibes xD

Good points:

- Good dialogue, the two characters had a visible personality.
- Interesting gameplay mechanic.

Bad points:

- The assets don't match each other. Some are pixel art, some are pictures...
- The text background wasn't the best choice, a little hard to read.

Liked the experience, congrats!!

Developer(+1)

thankyou for your review! i will head over to your page and have a try of your game now.

i was not happy with the art and assets however was limited to free assets and what i could get but do fully agree the art should match and would be better if it did.

i will likely adjust thye boldness of the text just so i can address the second point. thanks again!

Submitted(+1)

I love the dialogue!
