How does your game meet GBJam's theme
In Kota Chomp, the longer poop sits on the board, the older it gets, until it turns to gold.

This Old Gold is the ultimate food, helping Kota grow stronger and faster.

The more Old Gold you consume, the closer you get to becoming a GOLDEN GOD!

Poop grow old. Poop turn gold.

Eat, grow, poop, and become the golden god of all kots.

Now THIS is a good cat game!!

Probably my favorite theme interpretation.

If poop grow old, poop turn gold.

I'm always saying this.

Haha XD

The game play is so solid! I completely forgot about the snake game and happy to see this version/take on it! The pixel art (from the itch page to the UI) is so clean. Lovely work

Cute and hilarious game.  Easiest Snake variant I ever played, and that's not an insult.  (I normally dislike Snake) :D

I got over 100 the first time, and the game got even cuter.  (The second game I wasn't so lucky)  Do the graphics change again at 200 or higher scores, or is that it?  Either way, good job!

Developer

We were trying to find a way to make Snake more fun! We both have fond memories of playing it on our old Nokia 3310s, but the real fun, and panic, starts when you get really long and have to squirm around without running into yourself. We thought ramping up the length faster would get you to that point sooner.

Right now, the only visual change happens at 100 points. We thought it would be funny if, at 200, the room scaled down instead of the cat, making the cat look proportionally huge. We ran out of time near the end, though, and the evolved form only barely made it in as it is. We’ve been talking about releasing a fuller version with more levels.

And thank you so much for playing our game on stream! We were cracking up through the whole playthrough. Your reaction to it being snake initially sounded disappointed, but then it grew on you. Great stuff!

i returned to this one again and gotta say it's so much fun. it definitely has lots of replayability potential.

I didn't play and rate your game yet, so I did that. Fun snake game with a cat! I am really bad at this game; I only got a score of 89. The gameplay is fun and solid. The controls feel good to play with, and the music and graphics are quite good. Extra points for the gameplay mechanic where you can eat your own body to maintain your streak.

Got to 163! Very silly premise, not as gross as I expected. Larger scale art like the sardine tin is really well made. Overriding the default GB Studio menu icon with a cat is so good. Being able to recover after chomping your own body was very cool game design. Charming soundtrack matching the silly vibe.

Developer(+1)

We weren’t really going for gross-out humour. After Snake, one of our biggest references was the original Tamagotchi games on Game Boy.

Those games treat things like poop, hunger, and even your pet dying as part of this cute, goofy virtual-pet world. That was much closer to the tone we wanted: weird and a bit ridiculous, but still cute rather than gross.

Pretty cool iteration on Snake. I like the art, the game took a bit of playing to understand what was happening, i think the sound effects for eating something good vs eating something bad weren't different enough. I don't mind the instructions page, but i prefer when a game is intuitively understandable from simply playing.

The jump was pretty hard to time so i never ended up using it successfully. and the legs were odd, i knew that you rub them to get more fish to spawn but i didn't feel like the way i walked around the legs made much of a difference? There's always a lot visually happening on screen so it's hard to pay attention to everything i guess. Sound cues would have helped smoothen the experience overall i think. Maybe even colour-coding the good vs bad things to eat.

All in all it's a cute and innovative idea that's a little overwhelming but not too hard, i did get beyond 100 length, I’m not sure if there was another evolution but i didn't manage to get much further. Nice music too!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the thoughtful review! If we take the game further, I definitely want to make the mechanics more intuitive. We’ve already talked about starting with a slower intro level that teaches things one at a time instead of throwing everything at you at once.

There isn’t another evolution yet, but we have ideas. The next stage would make Kota about horse-sized, with the world shifting into more of a Pokémon-style overworld where houses suddenly look small next to you. After that, truck-sized Kota in a city, and eventually a planet-eating space god Kota lol.

This is properly silly lol. It took me awhile to get a hang of it but I managed to become the GOLDEN GOD! Very nice art and sounds, great music, loved the design choice of eating your own body when you hit it, can be used strategically to bump your score if you have enough lives left.  I enjoyed this a lot!

Man, one of the the most creative games I've played on this jam. The poop turning into gold as it turns old was so innovative xD

The pixel art and music is nice, I really liked it!

Very fun game. Congrats!!!

Nice take on a snake game and I thought the theme interpretation was really unique! It felt like there was some delay in the movement or maybe even some missed inputs, especially after evolving kota (which I thought was a neat mechanic).

Developer

There definitely are some issues with evolved Kota. We left that part until last because we weren’t sure we’d have enough time to get it in.

I’m really glad we managed to include it though, because otherwise the game wouldn’t have a punchline.

We have ideas for more levels and a few more twists, but first we should finish turning this poop into gold lol.

Very bizarre game.

This feels like something dreamt by a person that is really tired of convincing their cat to not eat their own poop.

The gameplay is great, even though I really suck at snake games, I got to 81 length.

The fact that you cleave yourself apart when you crash into yourself was not a mechanic I expected, and I think that's an interesting direction to take snake. Defending your poops from other things trying to remove them added a lot of unexpected strategy to the game.

The soundtrack is quite good, very whimsical and bright. The cat sound when you crash into anything is a good touch, and good use of the massaging the sound chip into specific sounds.

Maybe the weirdest game I've stumbled into this jam, for sure.

Developer

Nooo! You have to get Kota to 100 length to become a Golden God! jk It's okay if you don't, we really appreciate the play and the review!

Spoilers Kota evolves into a much bigger Kota at 100, which makes everything harder because suddenly you’re trying to navigate the same board with way less room.

I’m glad the game is landing as funny. By the time we were putting the itch page together, we were pretty sleep deprived and the humour definitely got weirder.

That said, the core idea was conceived while fully rested and sober, so we can’t really blame the lack of sleep.

Very interesting theme interpretation. I enjoyed it, can't really go wrong with snake. The art, sfx, and gameplay all exemplify the gameboy era. Very good job! I'd appreciate if you left us a rating as well.

Developer

Thanks for the review! And yes not a problem, we've left a review and rating. Your game was great. Would love to be able to play it on Game Boy hardware!

This game reminded me of two things: that snake game on Nokia phones and that cat-dog animation where they were connected and stretching out. The gameplay was fun and relaxing. Good luck!

Developer(+1)

Hmmm... both of us played a ton of Snake on our Nokia 3310s, and our animator loves CatDog.

You might have psychoanalyzed us down to a tee. Just don’t ask about our mothers lol.

The game was really fun to play, the game really had that gameboy kinda vibe. the graphics and music were spot on. Nice job with the game

It feels like the whole game was born from some inside joke you haven't shared quite yet lol. Pretty silly and charming game, i liked it! One just can't go wrong with a snake-like.

Developer(+1)

It really just came out of a joke about making a Snake game based on our greedy cat. Kota is our nickname for him, and the mice were added because the poop started cluttering the board while you waited for it to turn gold.

It definitely got way more out of pocket by the end than when the jam started lol.

The constant white flashing both of scene stransitions and hitting walls/enemies is overwhemling, distracting and generally just not a great game desing choice. It both hurts the eyes and are major epilepsy warning things, which I did not see at all.

The game itself is an interesting take on snake, maybe the cat is growing a bit too fast per food item, but I can see how this might be a game difficulty choice.

Art is okay sfx are a bit overwhelming but the ost is a bop.

overall not a bad entry with an interesting take on the theme

Developer

Thanks for the feedback. The scene fades come from GB Studio and are meant to mimic how transitions work on original Game Boy hardware. On the original LCD, those pixels simply fade back to the screen’s natural background, so the effect is much softer than the bright flash you can get on a modern backlit display.

I appreciate you pointing it out though, and I’m glad you liked the music!

Submitted

Such a silly game XD
Art is very charming, and the audio is nice. Definitely one of the more unique takes on the theme I've seen so far! Had a blast playing this one, keep it up ^^

also kinda reminds me of my rabbit; she eats her own poop too lol

Developer(+1)

Haha, the universal pet experience. Poop eating.

Thanks for the kind words about the art and audio! Give your rabbit our regards from Kota lol.

Very cool and unique take on the theme, I like the snake inspired gameplay I haven't quite seen something like it before.
I will admit the cat does get a bit hard to control when it turns big but I still had quite a lot of fun with it.

Very solid entry overall!

I image that the person standing int he middle is just froze in shock seeing their own cat devouring and growing in such a fast rate!
This was a cool snake game! Really like the jumping mechanics and the loop holes, really gives you a lot of utility to move around!
