Doing long and indepth game critiques

- I love writing big paragraph critiques about everything that I think is done well and what could have improved upon the creative vision of a submission. I will give you both a critique on what could have been done better in the 7 day  and how the project could be built upon post jam and the projects biggiest weaknesses and strenghts.

I will choose the game from this thread at random and will try to play every single game to the best of my ability.!

Also check out our funny little game :D

Its a neat idea of the old school rage platformer where the game plays against you

The controls could have been setup way better, id much prefer having to hold the space to climb up the ladder than having to use "W", also using the mouse to restart when you die is not very intuitive, you should be able to restart each level by just pressiong space, having to use your mouse in a game that doesn't have any mouse related controls is annoying.

The colors could have been abit better executed, I tought the pink Xs were dangerous when I first played cuause they are so vibrant, since they are a background elemnent they should be abit darker to not confuse the player.

I would have loved the uncle to be a bit more jokey or have some character besides only saying stuff as a cold statement.

The gimmick of the stuff being behind the uncle got obvious after the second level lol.

I do like the artstlye quite a bit, its very easy on the eyes, minimalistic and the color choices are good which makes for a pretty pleasent playing experience.

The controls are simple but it suits the game having no difficult platformer parts, its more of a puzzle game than a platformer?

Cool lil game good job

I like the idea of hearing a story of the character and having to determine wether to trust them or not.

But the game is far too short for the 3 lives you get, its mathematically impossible to fail even if you pick at random. Also there is no way to deduct wheter someone is lyring or not beisdes the whole them not being human thing, I like the final boss trying to manipulate you but I dont see any reason to trust him after figuring out he is lying upon the first interaction.

The sound design is good, I like the little music and slash sounds.

The graphics could be way better if you kept the pixelart sizes consistent and everything matched up, also characters do clip off of the little game scene and the UI looks out of style with the pixelated characters, the sprites themself look good!

A very short game that just need a little bit consistent artstyle and maybe abit more enocunters, which I guess you just couldnt do in a week so thats fine. If you even wann update it, keep thease in mind. Good job!

thank you very much, i really appreciate you taking the time to share this. I do know about most of this. i had a lot more ideas to flesh out the stories, add more visual effects, sounds and a small map and reward if you get the right trust, and a few more encounters. It is a bit of a lazy application but I was trying to keep tight to the theme of not trusting anyone so yeah you can just say nope and not trust anyone and win, kind of a easter egg but I did want to flesh out the trust system more. I was also not going to have anybody that you could actually trust but I decided to put one guy in that you could trust but because you can't even tell if he's a human or not, you really don't know who to trust and I tried to also put a lie into most of the dialogues so that it's like they say two truths and a lie sort of. so you don't even really know if you should trust them or not. and the theme was should just not trust anyone. so if they had at least one trait from the original list that says not to trust then you should definitely not trust them. I think that there is a knight encounter who you can trust, I don't think he has any of the list elements you cannot trus but you cant tell if he is a human haha.

but yeah I really wanted to do more. I just didn't want to be too crunched and then not be happy with my final results after putting in a lot of work which I'm kind of upset about because it seems a lot of people actually wanted to play more of this game and I did not think that was going to happen at all to be honest..in the next game or an update a lot of these things will be addressed :)

Ohhh, Imma up my theme rating to 5 starts cause you really couldnt trust anyone in this game lol!

The atmosphere you were able to squeez out of a 2/3 color pallete is insane, the music is just amazing and probably my favourite part, the starting sequence was very cinematic and beautfiul and had me all ears.

Really fw the artstlye, super simple but also so pleasing and everything is in the right place, + asteroids!

Sadly the game does fall flat in the middle of the playtrough, its just holding W. The little chat on the side is a very cool adition to kill the time with and really adds to world building of the game. Alot was left to the imagination which makes this for a very powerful experience atmosphere wise, great job.

I think a new game mechanic in the middle of the game would have been huge, like a small boost or a dash or something simple would have really made this much more fun, the game should retain its simplicity and focus on atmosphere but adding a small simple movement alternative mechanic or such would really make the middle part of the game much more bearable.

The ending chase part was fun but the ending was way too fast and I expcted something more cinematic, the music builds this tension that doesnt resolve which is a shame. The story is also lacking, the illusion of choice thing where you can deny a request doesnt really change the outcome of the story at all since you have to accept it either way, the pacing is way too fast and the middle part fails to hook me in with the seemingly pointless quests and getting paid with money that doesnt show up anywhere on the UI nor is really used in any way in the game.

This games atmosphere and worldbuilding are very strong but they need a more solid structure in either gameplay or story, cause the current game really got me hooked at the start but really felltrough in the middle...

Good job

Wow this might be the most unique concept I have seen this jam!

I really like the idea being flipped around not trusting yourself but I think it could have been abit more punishing since there is 0 actual incentive to actually lie to the characters but you are onto a much stronger concept here, just needs that one missing part to make it a super interesting mechanic that blows you away with the twist at the end.

Having to use your mouse to choose the dialogue is quite unintuitive cause everything else is done with the keyboard and it just ruins the flow of the game.

I like the graphics, the general game part is very constitent with pixel sizes, a small detail you missed is that the character does not get affected by the little shadows at the edges but is a nitpick. The character dialgoues though have inconsistent pixel sizes which makes it look much more jarring. Also the UI elements could have been made abit more in the style with the rest of the project just to keep the consistency and flow.

The sound design could have also been abit more consistent with some better sound choices, especially for cliking on dialgoue and the gates opening (Just lasts super long I feel + very loud!)

The puzzles are very well made, they are hard enough to get you thinking but easy enough that it fits a short jam submission game, good job! Some of the puzzles are quite creative and I really like how you went about doing them.

Overall this game has a mechanic that I can see being developed futher and has some very cool puzzle levels! Good job

This was a very cool game! I like the interactive character eyes that look at your cursor and the games gloomy lil gambling ring atmosphere.

The biggiest problem I have is that the difficulty progression does not really exist, you are given too many options for things to report, id also like if the game told you immidiately what was the right answer, in the game over screen you forget basically every hand... maybe starting out with 2 rules and slowly progressing up, some of them are also wored in a way that I was not 100% sure and they were kind of hard to notice. The game is quite difficult and a little frustrating but it could also be a skill issue.

I really like the atmosphere, the music and the graphics are also very cool.

Its a very simple game with some very good potentional, only if it was balanced abit better cause the reports were a lil confusing in my opinion, but it still could be a skill issue so I cannot give you an objective opinion on it... besides making the amount of things you can report get bigger, I think a small chart of the current games hands and outcomes would have made it easier, but also maybe too easy?

Maybe more dialogue from the characters as you play just to futher build on the world and atmosphere would have been a nice little touch.

Overall a very polished and cool game

I find it interesting and helpful to hear constructive critique. For example, which parts of the game people might find difficult to understand.

This is the first game I've ever published online, so I don't have enough experience to know how people, other than my friends, will react to certain game design choices.

What a charming little game, I got 4/9 questions, Didnt even know you could click on the talking critter until the last question of who blew up the pentagon, and I knew immidiately lmfaoo.

This reminds me like on of thoes videos where a group of peoeple is doing something and a dude in a gorilla costume runs trough the shot but no one notices it on the first watch .

The gameplay loop is really simple but the designs and such are stimulating enough that they keep your attention for the 60 seconds, the first round I just listened to the talking critter and was confused as to what you have to even do in the game since I was constnatly trying to click on the critters, but nothing really happened until I got to the questioning part, I didnt really trust the talking critter after that, its annoying but I think the game would be super empty without this overlyfriendly character (Edit: I fogot what the theme was for this jam..)... Maybe a super short tutroial or just an explentaion that you first observe them and then say who is the culprit

It could have been a bit better telegraphed, like more sound effects for each action just so you know something happened while you were looking at some other point, I missed most of the things even happening and some of the stuff was just way too hard to see, like the pink ice cream :p but the game does not have a strict win state and even if you get 0 points, the little overarching story of the talking critter makes this a fun little project nontheless.

Some of the buttons are not as responsive, took a few clicks to select a critter...

I don't have much bad to say about the game, it was resonably small scoped game and all the important parts of the game got the polish they needed, its a very short and satisfying experience!

Good job

PLEASE GIVE FEEDBACK ON MY GAME:/jam/brackeys-16/rate/4950481 IT'S A HORROR GAME

Submitted

I like the horror on this game, it creates very strong tension with how the maps change out, going from a consistent white to the backrooms altough the last level does look quite out of place, I like the game going from a fully lit room to a dark room.

In the dark hallways sequence it would have been way more effective if the monster was not shown to the player, let their imagination take over, and the monster being a fully black Tpose monster kind of breaks immersion so it would have been way better to keep the screams but not the monster, leave it to the imagination of the player.

In the tight maze level you get stuck to the walls, in unity you would have to make a new physics material and apply it to the player with the friction of 0, in any other case you just get stuck upon a contat with a collider. Also in unity you can add post processing effect called tonemapping, in the maze level the flaslight is dim but gets hilariously light when you get up close to a wall which would be solved by tonemapping. Also there are some camera issues that made it a bit harder to solve the little pin puzzle.

I really like the screaming sound effects, they got a good scare out of me even though they felt a little cheap at times and.

The music and the atmosphere is quite good and I see alot of potentional with your skills, just have to keep some elements more hidden from the player and let their imagination take over for the scary parts. Good game :D

I like the concept of the chairs and suberting the expectations with the stop sign.

Sadly the game is way too short, this is purely the 7day deadline thing but I was really hoping for more content cause the concept is strong :p

The slapping sound is a very nice addition and I like games that don't take themselves too seriously, this was a very goofy and fun game and the little stop signs almost had a "Character" with how expersivvely they move lol! This could be an extremely charming and fun little game if worked post jam and I think its a pretty good balance between skill and game knowedge where you have to try and fail to understand some sequences like the usual rage game but there is also a fair bit of chair dodging skill to have in order to beat it. I really like the last part where the sign is hidden and the chair try to backshot you even though you dont expect it to move...

The level design is okay, could have been way more interesting shilouette wise but it serves its purpouse, a bit more player response like a goofy walking sound and jump sound  would go along way to make the game feel more responsive and immersive!

The cursor being detached from the game every time you die is very annoying and I reckon its a very simple fix aswell, also really breaks the immersion of the game and makes the gameplay flow less smooth overall because of it.

Its a pretty cool game, wished it was a bit longer cause I had quite a blast playing trough it!
