I found the system you designed very interesting, and it works well. Aside from that, the levels feature an interesting, gradual difficulty curve.

Visually, I think the project has great potential to grow in the future. beyond the jam,by adopting a 2.5D style and featuring a larger set of different cards.

Very promising; congratulations on the work.

Developer

Thank you! I agree that this game really lend itself to be 2.5d. Maybe I'll give it a go after the jam

Very nice look and feel, it feels like a very finished game! The medieval parchment style and the soundtrack blend perfectly to create an amazing atmosphere. The interactive map is a brilliant feature, and the card combat is very strategic and addictive. Well done!

Developer

Thank you so much for your kind words!

A really smooth experience, and the onboarding is great — it let me pick up the game quickly.

I promised I would play and rate, so here I am.

First of all, I could instantly tell it was a medieval game just from the way the words were displayed, kind of like they were written on parchment. I found that quite immersive (even on your presentation page)!

Something I do need to point out, though: the dialogue at the beginning isn't very easy to read, and it goes wayyy too fast. It would be great if you could update that and give players a little more time to read everything.

Secondly, I really enjoyed the music! The slightly unexpected mix of medieval music with kinda bouncy beats was actually really fun. It kept me really engaged throughout the game.

I had a bit of trouble figuring out how the game ties into the theme of the jam, but I really enjoyed discovering and playing your game nonetheless. I'm honestly usually not a big fan of combat games like this, but I really enjoyed the concept of the cards and having to think strategically about what to do and which tactics to use. I also realllyyyyy enjoyed the concept of the interactive map, that's definitely something I'd keep!

However, I also sometimes felt like I was clicking a bit randomly when choosing my cards, without fully understanding what my actions would do. Maybe I missed something, but if I clicked on one of the soldiers in my army, they would get killed, so it sometimes felt like I was making choices a bit blindly, even after going through the explanations at the beginning. I'd love to have a short explanation or controls/instructions section that summarizes what you're supposed to do and, most importantly, what will happen when you perform each action. I think that would make the gameplay much easier to understand! For example, it could also explain which specific type of soldier is more effective against which enemy type, etc.

Overall, though, I really enjoyed discovering your game, and I actually found it quite addictive, I can't wait to go back to it! The medieval atmosphere, the bouncy medieval/kinda hip-hop/rap music, and especially the interactive map made it a fun experience! Special shoutout to the “Merde!” and the surprised face every time, it genuinely made me laugh lmao 😭

Developer

Thank you so much for the detailed feedback, it really helps!

Re: the dialog - The dialog progress when you click, but in hindsight I should've made it clearer, and maybe also have a short timer before you can click again so you won't double click

Re: the rules - Several people had issues with it. You catually inspired me to make a little picture on the itch io page to try and explain it better. I tried to model simple medieval battles:

  • The side with more infantry pushes the other side, but there are generally small number of casualties
  • Archers are mainly used to inflict kills, but can't hold the line
  • Cavalry does a bit of both - charge head on the drive the enemy back, or kill routing units etc

I tried to simulate this with 3 attributes:

  • Strength - generally the more strength you have, the more you'll "push" the other battle line - which I represented with the meter
  • Attack - can you kill other units
  • Defence - can you block specific attacks (shield blocks arrows, spears/running away blocks cavalry charges, armor blocked both)

In hindsight again, I should've started with 1 card for each, maybe it would help explain it better

I'm really glad you liked the map and the merge moments, those are my favorites too! Thanks again for your feedback and kind words :)

Hi Atsh! Thank you so much for your reply. Please let me know me when the updates will be implemented to the game. I’d love to come back to it whenever you’re done with the post jam updates ;) But thank you so much for the additional explanations, that’s really helpful and nice to see and understand your pov

Saw your comment on my game and came to try yours! :D Stupid comments limit is slowing down feedbacks

Okay first of all the music caught my attention. Medival-hop lol! That fits and is pretty cool. Second, gameplay was fun and functioned great. UI was clean and uncluttered, all around great entry!

The card plays feel really smooth, art is really charming, and there's audio to boot. Very impressive for a solo project.
There's a heavy first-turn bias favoured towards the player which I suppose is fine for a singleplayer experience, but strategy quickly became rock-paper-scissors. Could flesh out after the game jam, congrats on the submission!

Developer

You're right about first turn bias. I wanted the players to respond to the AI in order to learn the mechanics. I agree that in a real game this should be more elaborated.

Glad you enjoyed and thanks for the comment!

Really amazing game with a shocking amount of content to play through. Lowkey had me thinking through what I was doing and was genuinely something insanely incredible. The reputation system made me think of "Reigns" in the beginning. I ended up warring against England initially and got betrayed by the HRC. Was really happy with the deck I had built up against the HRC. Literally everything about this is amazing and well polished.

Developer

Really appricaite you played it all the way to the end! I haven't played Reigns but ill check it out. Thanks again for your comment :)

Fun game. I like that depending on where you stand with peasants and royalty- it can effect whether some of your cards choose not to fight for you. It definitely made the game much harder when I didn't have access to some of the cards. Awesome work

Developer(+1)

Some people missed this event due to random chance, but I'm glad you noticed. Thanks for playing!

The game is incredibly well polished and fun to play, which is saying a lot coming from someone who isn't into card games, lol! The only critique I have is how much it use a bit of RNG when drawing cards, I had some terrible luck while playing, lol, and thats fine for a jam submission. All in all, great game

Developer

I agree that rng can be a bastard in this one . Thanks and glad you liked it!

I love deck battle games, and this one is done right! Nice settings and easily engaging. I'd suggest you to do some works on balancing the game. At some points I was unable to deal any damage as my cards were dying as soon as I deployed them, and I strangely WON those games! So it is neat and has A LOT of potential but would be great with some balancing improvements. Easily 4/5 for me!

Developer(+1)

The thematic idea about the system is that if 2 militia fight 1 archer, the 2 militia "push" the archer back and so you gain an advantage, but you lose one soldier because of the archer fire. I wanted players to balance gaining advantage and not taking too many loses. I agree that it's weird that you can win with just cards in your hands lol. Need more balance for sure

Thanks and glad you liked it!

I liked the game! I didn’t quite understand how it matches the theme of the jam, but I don’t rule out that it’s just my stupidity. The game’s artwork is really nice, you probably spent a lot of time on it. I didn’t find any downsides, the only thing would be to upload a lot of different music and play them in turn with fade transitions, because after a while it gets annoying. Good luck!

Developer

Thanks! There is a random event that relates to the theme, especially after you finish the first 5 cities :)

great game! love card games and games that need strategies

The art and mechanics are good, and making a tutorial is a good idea.

Submitted(+1)

I really enjoyed the game! I definitely appreciated the tutorial at the beginning, because without it I probably would have struggled to figure out what to do and how everything works. The text hints explaining what is happening and what I should do next were also really helpful.

My favorite part is probably the art style, especially because I used something somewhat similar for this jam too. 😄

For the future, I’d maybe like to see the cards become a bit more visually distinct. For example, the axeman could have a different character design from the archer, instead of mainly changing the weapon. But I completely understand that there was very limited time during the jam.

Great job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the comment! It always fun to discover another strategy games lover :)

And yes I agree about the characters - I totally made cheap tricks to save time

Loved your game and wrote a feedback!

Viva la Franks!

I really like your game, it is super easy to pick up and play, I have had a blast going through the game. I really like the music and the visual style. I had a good time playing it :)

Submitted(+1)

I like your concept! and I like your art!

Really fun game!! I’m not usually great at strategy games, but this one really pulled me in. At first I thought it was super easy ,just drag any of the cards around and win. Then I got back to Paris and everything changed… and all my light cavalry ran away 😭

Submitted(+1)

song slaps, took me far too long to realise why my guys were dying but very fun and nice it’s so quick to replay a level!

A fun little card game. It took me a while to figure out how everything worked but I got it before long. I thought it fit the theme and was enjoyable throughout. The art style was nice and the dialogue was funny lol. A fun little time all around :)

i love card games and this game is SO damn cool and fun. honestly it might be the most enjoyable one i've played for now. The only problem for me is that it doesnt fit the theme a lot but it's still amazing!

Developer

Thanks! There is a random event that relates to the theme, especially after you finish the first 5 cities
