Nice jam game, the crude hand-drawn art was charming and fit the vibes. The different modes (shopping, card game, survivor shoot out) was interesting and changed things up. The main menu selections could be more bold; took a minute to realize where to click. Also combat could've been snappier with some juice to really build that tension. Otherwise nice entry overall.

Hey man!

Thanks for the comment about the artwork, i think working under pressure usually churns out more dedication from me in the long run!

Great art style, and I really enjoyed the boss duel like a real wild west outlaw :) I did notice a slight menu bug I wanted to mention. When switching to Fullscreen in the Options menu, it tells you to press ESC to exit. But pressing ESC just drops the game back into windowed mode, and you have to press it a second time to actually return to the main menu. Just a small heads-up on the UI, but otherwise, awesome job on the game!

Developer

Thanks for your input on the art! I am planning on making it better for potential updates :)

Good game. As other comments said, you should buff the damage and maybe add more aoe(i've only tried 2 guns). The enemies are overlapping weirdly. You could fix this by adding y depth sorting + making the health bars a higher ui z index. The main menu buttons blended a bit too much into the background and you should make the first play animation a lot faster(you should make it zoom out for a couple frames then zoom right back in). Good game though!

Developer

sort of a design choice between me and the coder, but i get what you are saying! We will improve alot of the art for potential updates!

Nice gameplay, soundtrack and theme but i wish we dealt more damage. But i like it goodjob!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! We look forward to VERY possibly developing this further after the Game Jam version!

Submitted(+1)

Good job on that entry ! As some previous comments said, this game was a bit difficult and long to take down all the enemys at the same time, they're pretty tanky !

That said, I liked the idea and how you handled the visuals ! congrat !

Developer

thank you for your compliment on the art! We will be expanding on it more on potential updates!

A bit too difficult for me, it could have been made more gradually difficult spawning more enemies(?) with each round of poker played, giving the player the opportunity to stack up a bit. Currently I needed to get really lucky with the first hand and hope for the best. I also didn't really get how it fit into the theme.
Other then that it's a novel idea :)

Developer(+1)

It fits the theme because the Dealer, the one dealing you your enhanced cards, is the final boss, and he influenced you from the very start of the game!
And thank you for the feedback!!!

Nice game! I love the art!

Developer

Thanks! Made all the art myself.

I like how it blends both themes, poker and western cowboy. They converge really well and make a great game. Without a doubt, it was very entertaining to play.

Submitted(+1)

Cool twist that this starts with poker stuff and then turns into a survivor-like Wild West fight. The card swap idea is neat too, especially how higher card values boost damage and the face cards give effects like Ice Jack and Acid King. It took me a minute to fully get it, but the atmosphere and music are super good, nice job :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks cemizm! I tried to make a unique track list for this game, I'm glad you like it!

Submitted(+1)

I really love the sound effects and music you made for the game! They fit the atmosphere really well. Great game!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! All the music was made in-house by Crusty Trayson.

Here are all 10 tracks if you want to take a big listen. Stream Crusty Trayson | Listen to Deadman's Hand playlist online for free on SoundCloud

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much! I tried to make a very unique track list for this game that used all sorts of new METHODS! (Revolvum reference)

A bit more of explanations on how to play could be desirable, other than that cool visuals and enjoyable game overall!

Once the card mechanics clicked, I had a lot of fun with this! After a few tries, I made it to the desert boss, but arrived with only 1 HP left and got shot immediately. Really enjoyed the run! How many stages are there?

Developer (1 edit) (+2)

Davo, the Dealer, is the final boss, which is level 3!

We planned to make his attacks throwing cards, but we ran out of time to implement them.

This game has a lot of potential, there are alot of things that can become major attraction such as the card gamplay and combat. I liked the combination of both. Great job guys.

Edit: Great art btw.

Developer(+1)

Thank you! We do plan on building it up into a full Steam release with both of those heavily expanded upon!

Submitted(+1)

Loved the concept! I'd really like to see a fleshed-out and polished version of this. I may have missed it but im not quite sure how this fits into the theme

Developer(+1)

You get betrayed by your partner, Adder, who is boss one, and the final boss is the Dealer, from whom your powers come from!

Thank you for playing!

I really liked the design of your game.

Well done!

What an awesome plot twist! Pivoting from a poker setup into a full survivor-like shooter is such a cool and unique concept. The atmosphere, music, and art design are stellar. My main feedback would be working on weapon balance/enemy scaling (enemies clump up a bit easily), adding hit feedback so you know when you've taken damage, and making the shop economy/in-game tutorials clearer for new players. The core idea has massive potential for a full Steam release! I hope you also get a chance to play my game and leave a review: /jam/brackeys-16/rate/4953523

We had a dialogue to further explain the in-game mechanics, but we ran out of time to implement them. As a man who playtested it on the prerelease version, the guns were wayyy weaker lol, but we have been messing around with it since we posted it; there is hit feedback in a sound effect, but the music was just a tad bit too loud. We also do plan on expanding the game and releasing it on Steam later on in its development.  As for your game, I added it to the list to play and rate it on my next submissions stream, which is happening late Friday night.

Thanks for explaining the context! Scope creep during jams is always tough, but the core loop is definitely solid. Tuning down the music volume to hear those hit SFX better makes total sense, and taking it to Steam later sounds like a great move.

Also, thanks a lot for adding Star Cube to your stream list, I really appreciate it! Great gesture, man. I'll be tuned in on Friday night for sure.

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! I definitely have a lot to learn about music theory but I had fun making it and I am glad you enjoyed our game!

Developer

Thanks for the compliment on the art! Ill be working on it more in future updates

Submitted(+1)

Thought I was gonna play a card game but bam! Survivor like game lol. Adding some visual feedback when the player was hit can help me to know if I was hit or not. Liked the music!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I tried to be very unique about this game's music and was experimenting a LOT.

Submitted(+1)

Liked the art style, very silly !

On the web version i had a problem with fullscreen. After setting the game to fullscreen, when pressing "esc" to leave the settings, the game would go back to small. Maybe try adding a button on the screen or another key. (This also applys in the shop)

Well done in rest!

Developer

Im glad you liked my silly art style! We hope to match the same vibe (in a more serious way) in potential updates

Submitted(+2)

There are a lot of cool things going on in this game. It could easily be expanded into many directions :) Well done team.

Developer(+1)

Thank you! We do plan on expanding it more in the future, for we would like to publish it on Steam later on in its development!

Submitted(+1)

the poker table itself and the dealer portrait are genuinely creepy in a good way.  the music fits nicely, I love the art, nice game

Developer

Thank you!

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you liked the music! Thank you!

Developer
